Silversea Luxury Cruises To Praslin

Praslin

Forty kilometers (25 miles) northeast of Mahé, Praslin is just a 15-minute flight or 45-minute ferry ride away. Praslin, at 11 km (7 miles) long and 4 km (2.5 miles) wide, is the second-largest island in the Seychelles. View more

First settled as a hideaway by pirates and Arab merchants, the island's original name, Isle de Palmes, bears testament to its reputation as home of the Vallée de Mai UNESCO World Heritage Site: the only place in the world where the famous Coco de Mer, the world's heaviest nut, grows abundantly in the wild. Praslin's endemic palm forests shelter many rare species, and the island is a major bird-watching destination. Surrounded by a coral reef, majestic bays, and gorgeous beaches, Praslin is much quieter and less developed than Mahé. With few real "sights," the pleasures of Praslin largely involve relaxing in or exploring its stunning beaches and fantastical forests.

Excursions in Praslin

Coco Island Snorkel Adventure

Snorkelling fans can discover the exotic marine world the Seychelles are famous for. After your tender ride ashore, board the catamaran and sail towards Coco Island. Cruise onboard a sailing catamaran for a snorkelling experience that is the best. The island is merely a small granitic outcrop with a few palm trees, but its real treasure lies in the depths around. Often compared to a living aquarium, the site attracts numerous fish species floating to the surface to feed - a unique underwater paradise.

From the boat, enter the crystalline waters to swim and snorkel among brilliantly coloured fish. You may want to wear a T-shirt while snorkelling as sun protection and bring a second T-shirt to change into afterwards. Refreshments are served on board the catamaran on your return to the pier.

Please note: We recommend wearing a swimsuit under a beach cover-up and rubber shoes to protect feet from coral. Snorkel equipment is provided. Guests must be able to climb the boat's ladder down and out of the water. When requesting your tour ticket, please indicate your shoe size for proper size fins. Tour has limited space, but requires a minimum to operate. Due to the nature of the tour, participants are asked to sign a disclaimer.

Vallée de Mai

This tour offers guests the opportunity to experience the natural wonder of the Vallée de Mai, home to the fabled Coco de Mer, a World Heritage Site. As well, spend some time at Praslin's glorious beaches, notably Côte d'Or Beach.

Vallée De Mai

Following the tender ride ashore, board your coach for the 15-minute drive to the Praslin National Park, set in the central hills and covering an area of more than one square mile. During a guided walk into this magical forest, feel an atmosphere of great tranquillity surround you. Only the carefully laid out paths betray the fact that human hands have been at work here to make the homeland of the coco de mer accessible to the visitor and to provide an idea of the vegetation existing on the island prior to the arrival of Europeans.

Follow your guide on a nature trail and learn about a variety of interesting botanical species. At times, the palm fronds form such a thick roof that the sun is obliterated. Even walking just a short distance into this green palm thicket will enable you to marvel at the endemic coco de mer palms, some of which grow 60 to 90 feet (18-28 metres) high. For many years, the origin of the palms' uniquely shaped fruit, which washed ashore on African and Asian coasts, was shrouded in mystery. One of the legends suggested that giant underwater trees produced them, thereby giving the heavy (up to 40 pounds, 18 kg), double-cheeked nut its name. During the early 1900s, this rare object was such a highly prised collector's item that one illustrious owner even had it embellished in gold. Following your walk, there is time for a quick look at the gift shop before reboarding the coach.

Côte d'Or Beach

Next, a 20-minute drive brings you to the coastal area. At lovely Côte d'Or Beach, have about an hour to relax, swim and enjoy a cold drink, while taking in the shoreline beauty. Your tour concludes with the drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking at Vallée de Mai, partly on uneven ground and with some steep inclines. Lightweight clothing, swimwear and suitable shoes for walking are recommended.
