Silversea Luxury Cruises To Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca

If you look north of the cathedral (La Seu, or the seat of the bishopric, to Mallorcans) on a map of the city of Palma, you can see around the Plaça Santa Eulàlia a jumble of tiny streets that made up the earliest settlement. Farther out, a ring of wide boulevards traces the fortifications built by the Moors to defend the larger city that emerged by the 12th century. The zigzags mark the bastions that jutted out at regular intervals. View more

By the end of the 19th century, most of the walls had been demolished; the only place where you can still see the massive defenses is at Ses Voltes, along the seafront west of the cathedral.A torrent (streambed) used to run through the middle of the old city, dry for most of the year but often a raging flood in the rainy season. In the 17th century it was diverted to the east, along the moat that ran outside the city walls. Two of Palma's main arteries, La Rambla and the Passeig d'es Born, now follow the stream's natural course. The traditional evening paseo (promenade) takes place on the Born.If you come to Palma by car, park in the garage beneath the Parc de la Mar (the ramp is just off the highway from the airport, as you reach the cathedral) and stroll along the park. Beside it run the huge bastions guarding the Almudaina Palace; the cathedral, golden and massive, rises beyond. Where you exit the garage, there's a ceramic mural by the late Catalan artist and Mallorca resident Joan Miró, facing the cathedral across the pool that runs the length of the park.If you begin early enough, a walk along the ramparts at Ses Voltes from the mirador beside the cathedral is spectacular. The first rays of the sun turn the upper pinnacles of La Seu bright gold and then begin to work their way down the sandstone walls. From the Parc de la Mar, follow Avinguda Antoni Maura past the steps to the palace. Just below the Plaça de la Reina, where the Passeig d'es Born begins, turn left on Carrer de la Boteria into the Plaça de la Llotja (if the Llotja itself is open, don't miss a chance to visit—it's the Mediterranean's finest Gothic-style civic building). From there stroll through the Plaça Drassana to the Museu d'Es Baluard, at the end of Carrer Sant Pere. Retrace your steps to Avinguda Antoni Maura. Walk up the Passeig d'es Born to Plaça Joan Carles I, then right on Avenida de La Unió.

Excursions in Palma de Mallorca

Biking in Palma

Indulge your senses with the fresh air, great outdoors and scenic beauty of Palma during this memorable bicycle tour through the historic Old Town. Together with your English speaking guide, discover all of the "must see" spots in a fun, safe, insightful and most important, eco-friendly way. Learn of the history, the traditions and of the present of this fascinating city.

Palma de Mallorca

Once ashore, meet your guide, receive your safety briefing, bicycle and helmet, then follow the dedicated bicycle lane along the bay and into the city. Your route proceeds for approximately 100 yards (about 91 meters) on top of the old city wall before entering the small and shady alleyways of the Old Town.

En route, discover churches, small monasteries and old aristocrat's mansions featuring cozy patios and enchanting small plazas. Along the way, your guide offers interesting commentary about your surroundings, and points out interesting sights.

Halfway through the ride, a refreshment stop is made at a local tavern before continuing on your bicycle tour, which concludes back at the pier.

Please note: The total route travelled is 6-8 miles (10-12 kilometres) over mostly flat surfaces. This tour is only recommended for guests in good physical condition and is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or guests who utilise a wheelchair. Caves of Drach

Unveil the mystery of Mallorcan pearls during this half-day journey to the renowned Caves of Drach, and a subterranean classical concert at one of the world's largest underwater lakes. The caves have formed by water being forced through the entrance from the Mediterranean Sea, and some researchers think the formation may date back to the Miocene. There is an underground lake situated in the caves called Martel Lake.

Depart the pier for the approximately one-hour drive to the island's interior, and a visit to the village of Montuiri.

Montuiri

Visit the Factory & Museum in Montuiri with more than 7.000 sqm, where you can follow the complete Manufacturing Process of the Pearls & Jewels:

The creation of the Pearl nucleus, the baths with its unique formula, and the manual knotting of the necklaces and bracelets using a technique that has not changed in the last 100 years. All this in the hands of more than 50 operators that you can see working live, as this is the only factory of Mallorca pearls that can still be visited on the island. The history of the Mallorca pearls, dates back to the early twentieth century, when Japan interrupts its production of cultured pearls because of WW1. In order to meet the international demand, the Pearl production is introduced in Mallorca, in small workshops where the natural process of the oyster is artisanal produced. The store exhibition, with more than 2.500 sqm is considered the largest exhibition of pearls in the country. More than 3.000 designs of jewelry in Natural pearls, Cultured pearls and Majorca Pearls.

Caves of Drach

Next, re-board your coach for the drive to the Caves of Drach, or 'Cuevas del Drach', located near Porto Cristo. Perhaps as famous as the pearls, the caves were believed to have been discovered in the 12th century. In 1929, a visitor's entrance was built at the caves, and in 1935, the caves' interior was artistically illuminated for the first time. Today, the caves offer a surreal experience to visitors strolling through their ancient rooms. Dramatic lighting highlights the grottoes and silhouettes of immense stalagmites and stalactites.

During your walking tour inside the cave, see formations with names like 'Snow Mountain', 'The Ruined Castle', and 'Diana's Baths' en route to the shore of Lake Martel, one of the largest subterranean lakes in the world. Here, a short concert of classical pieces is accompanied by the interplay of shadows and light against the water.

Following your exploration of the caves, re-board the coach for the approximately one-hour return drive to the ship in Palma.

Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of walking, with 120 steps to negotiate in the caves. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or guests who utilise a wheelchair. No photography or video is permitted in the caves.
