Excursions in Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard

Down Island Tour

The towns on Martha's Vineyard offer surprising diversity, each with its own character and personality. This tour will take you through all six of the Vineyard's townships. Stops will be made at Gay Head Cliffs and in Edgartown.

Oak Bluffs

With its gingerbread cottages and Ocean Front Park, Oak Bluffs is a Victorian-era summer resort. At the foot of Circuit Avenue, the main street, is the remarkable Flying Horses Carousel, the oldest operating carousel in the nation. You will drive past the Methodist Campground, which consists of gingerbread houses constructed to replace the Methodist meeting tents.

Vineyard Haven

This is the island's picturesque center of commerce. Boat building is centered here and most visitors arrive here from the mainland.

West Tisbury

All the characteristics of a typical New England village - a white church, general store, post office, old mill, farms and ponds can be associated with West Tisbury.

One of New England's most elegant communities, Edgartown's Main Street is a picturebook setting with its harbor and waterfront. See the stately white Greek Revival houses built by the whaling captains. There will be two-hour stop here. Stroll along North Water Street and see a row of captains' houses; study the fanlights and widow's walks. The huge pagoda tree that dominates South Water Street was brought from China as a seedling in the early days of the 19th century. Other sites include the Vincent House, the oldest known house on the island; the Federated Church, built in 1812, with old box pews; and the Old Whaling Church, that was built in 1843 at the height of the whaling industry.

After your visit of Edgartown, reboard your coach for the short drive back to Oak Bluffs.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking and is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair; however, guests must be able to board the coach via steps and collapsible wheelchairs will be stowed on the coach. Motorised scooters may not be accommodated on this tour. Two hours of free time are allotted during this tour and walking is at guests' discretion. This tour operates in school busses.
