Silversea Luxury Cruises To MYKONOS ISLAND

MYKONOS ISLAND

Although the fishing boats still go out in good weather, Mykonos largely makes its living from tourism these days. The summer crowds have turned one of the poorest islands in Greece into one of the richest. Old Mykonians complain that their young, who have inherited stores where their grandfathers once sold eggs or wine, get so much rent that they have lost ambition, and in summer sit around pool bars at night with their friends, and hang out in Athens in winter when island life is less scintillating. Put firmly on the map by Jackie O in the 1960s, Mykonos town—called Hora by the locals—remains the Saint-Tropez of the Greek islands. The scenery is memorable, with its whitewashed streets, Little Venice, the Kato Myli ridge of windmills, and Kastro, the town's medieval quarter. Its cubical two- or three-story houses and churches, with their red or blue doors and domes and wooden balconies, have been long celebrated as some of the best examples of classic Cycladic architecture. Luckily, the Greek Archaeological Service decided to preserve the town, even when the Mykonians would have preferred to rebuild, and so the Old Town has been impressively preserved. Pink oleander, scarlet hibiscus, and trailing green pepper trees form a contrast amid the dazzling whiteness, whose frequent renewal with whitewash is required by law. Any visitor who has the pleasure of getting lost in its narrow streets (made all the narrower by the many outdoor stone staircases, which maximize housing space in the crowded village) will appreciate how its confusing layout was designed to foil pirates—if it was designed at all. After Mykonos fell under Turkish rule in 1537, the Ottomans allowed the islanders to arm their vessels against pirates, which had a contradictory effect: many of them found that raiding other islands was more profitable than tilling arid land. At the height of Aegean piracy, Mykonos was the principal headquarters of the corsair fleets—the place where pirates met their fellows, found willing women, and filled out their crews. Eventually the illicit activity evolved into a legitimate and thriving trade network. Morning on Mykonos town's main quay is busy with deliveries, visitors for the Delos boats, lazy breakfasters, and street cleaners dealing with the previous night's mess. In late morning the cruise-boat people arrive, and the shops are all open. In early afternoon, shaded outdoor tavernas are full of diners eating salads (Mykonos's produce is mostly imported); music is absent or kept low. In mid- and late afternoon, the town feels sleepy, since so many people are at the beach, on excursions, or sleeping in their air-conditioned rooms; even some tourist shops close for siesta. By sunset, people have come back from the beach, having taken their showers and rested. At night, the atmosphere in Mykonos ramps up. The cruise-boat people are mostly gone, coughing three-wheelers make no deliveries in the narrow streets, and everyone is dressed sexy for summer and starting to shimmy with the scene. Many shops stay open past midnight, the restaurants fill up, and the bars and discos make ice cubes as fast as they can. Ready to dive in? Begin your tour of Mykonos town (Hora) by starting out at its heart: Mando Mavrogenous Square.

Excursions in MYKONOS ISLAND

Cruise & Swim in Mykonos

Indulge your senses with the exquisite beaches and coastal beauty of Mykonos during this picturesque cruise along the shoreline.

Depart the pier for the brief transfer into the town of Mykonos. Upon arrival, embark a traditional, handcrafted wooden Kalavoskaro-style sailing vessel (sails are not utilised, vessel is under motor-power) for a cruise to some of the island's most renowned beaches. Along the way, enjoy views of sun-kissed beaches, and time permitting, stop to relax, swim and explore.

Traditional snacks and an open bar are available during the return cruise back to the town of Mykonos. Your tour concludes with a brief transfer back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of activity, and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Operation of this tour is subject to favourable sea and weather conditions; the vessel will be under motor-power. Guests are advised to wear a swimsuit under a cover-up with beach shoes, and bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and a towel from the ship.

Elia Beach Break

Enjoy some fun in the Mediterranean sun during this half-day beach break.

Use this opportunity to spend some relaxation time at one of the best beaches of Mykonos. Elia beach is one of the island's most gorgeous beaches and is the longest sandy beach on Mykonos, fully organized, offering a wide choice of taverns and bars as well as water sports facilities such as water-skiing, parasailing and windsurfing.

A short transfer from the pier brings you to this scenic area to enjoy the afternoon. Your English-speaking escort will assist you with any inquiries you may have during the transfer and will also advise the pick-up time for the return transfer to the port.

During your stay at the beach, enjoy the comfort of a sunbed and the shade of an umbrella while you take in the warm rays of the afternoon sun. An included menu for every four guests (sharing the Greek way) consisting of a traditional Greek salad, tzatziki, taramosalata, mushrooms cooked in garlic butter and parsley, fresh mussels cooked in white wine sauce and more, accompanied by beverages, makes this outing a real Greek beach experience.

Please note: Tour involves minimal walking; however guests must be capable of walking a short distance through the sand to the sunbeds. We suggest guests wear seasonal clothing, flat, walking shoes, sun protection and bring their swimsuit and towel from the ship. Watersports rentals are available at the beach and some areas designated as clothing optional. Guests wishing to stay longer at the beach are responsible for making their own way back to the ship. A minimum number of participants is required to operate this programme. Operation is also dependent upon favourable weather conditions.

Jeep Safari

Explore hidden corners of Mykonos accessible only by Jeep during a half-day, off-road excursion through this idyllic island.

Choulakia Beach and Lighthouse

Depart the pier via self-driven Jeep for the scenic drive along the coast to Choulakia Beach, then proceed to the Lighthouse. After a photo stop here, your tour continues through the Marathi area and past the dam en route to Ano Mera.

Ano Mera and Castle Ruins

Upon arrival in Ano Mera, a stop is made at Paleokastro, the ruins of a Venetian castle. Next, explore the agricultural area around Ano Mera, and an old, abandoned mine located nearby. A refreshment stop is then made at a picturesque locale before re-boarding your jeep for the drive past Kalo Livadi and through verdant Chalara. From here, commence the brief return drive to the pier in Mykonos, with a photo stop at a panoramic viewpoint en route.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking and driving over bumpy, uneven terrain. This tour is not suitable for pregnant women, guests with back and/or neck problems, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. This is a self-driven tour experience in a manual (stick shift) Jeep. Drivers must be at least 21 years old, and carry a valid driver's license. The cost of this programme is per person and not per jeep. Each jeep will accommodate 2 ticketed guests, children travelling with both parents on this programme may ride at no additional charge. This tour does not include a visit to the Venetian Castle, or any other archaeological sites or museums. When the ship is anchored in the bay, a walk of approximately one mile (1.2 kilometres) is required to reach the bus parking area.

Mykonos Panorama

Indulge your senses with the exquisite beauty and flavours of Mykonos during this panoramic, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Scenic Drive and Agios Ioannis Beach

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate 30-minute drive south to the beach of Agios Ioannis. En route, take in splendid views of Delos Island in the distance and pass by Ornos Beach, one of the most beautiful and cosmopolitan beaches in Mykonos. After a photo stop at Agios Ioannis, resume your drive past the beaches of Kalafatis and Agia Anna, and on to the centre of the island for a visit to the traditional village of Ano Mera.

Ano Mera and Monastery Visit

Next, take a guided tour of the nearby Panagia Tourliani Monastery, built by monks in 1542 and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The monastery features wonderful, unique island architecture, an ornately-carved marble fountain in the courtyard and a carved wooden screen in the church that was imported from Florence. From here, proceed to the peaceful little village-square for some Greek appetisers and 'ouzo', then return to Mykonos.

Mykonos

Mykonos Island is world-famous for its unique landscape, pure-white houses, snow-white churches with red or blue domes, windmills, beautiful bays, and superb beaches with crystal-clear waters. During your guided walking tour, visit a traditional, 15th-century bakery that is still in operation today. Following your tour, you may opt to return directly to the Tourlos Pier via shuttle bus, or remain in town at your leisure (time permitting) and return to the ship on your own.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 75 minutes, mostly on uneven ground. It is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Wear light-weight, comfortable clothing with closed-toe walking shoes, and bring protection from the sun. Ladies must wear skirts and cover their shoulders for the visit to the monastery; shorts are not permitted inside. Guests must be at least 21 years old to be served alcoholic beverages. When the ship is anchored in the bay, a walk of approximately one mile (1.2 kilometres) is required to reach the bus parking area. A minimum number of guests per guide is required to operate this programme.

Mykonos Walking Tour

Mykonos is probably the most well-known and talked about of all the Greek islands. Re-known today for its jet-set nightlife and wild beaches, Mykonos, after various occupations typical in the history of Greece, actually made a substantial impact during the Greek War of Independence. After which, the life here did settled down for a while before it was 're discovered' as a beautiful location for filming and bringing with it actors, artists and jet setters. Upon arriving in Mykonos Town, your walking tour will begin to showcase both the lifestyle and the true history of this unique town.

Commence your walking tour through the narrow whitewashed streets; here you can appreciate the fact that its' confusing layout was designed to foil the attacking pirates. The picture-perfect "Little Venice", so called due to its striking resemblance in design to the famous canal city and the nearby windmills (an island trademark) offer wonderful photo opportunities. Afterwards, enjoy some free time for shopping before returning to the ship.

Please note: Tour involves a moderate amount of walking over cobbled and uneven surfaces. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or for those who utilise a wheelchair. We suggest guests wear lightweight, seasonal clothing, flat, walking shoes and sun protection.

The Sacred Island of Delos

Experience the ancient beauty and ruins of Delos during a scenic and informative half-day tour of this sacred island.

Depart the ship for the brief transfer to the local ferry dock, then board a ferry, or 'caique', for the 45-minute ride to the tiny, uninhabited island of Delos. Upon arrival, your tour continues on foot.

Although Delos Island only has an area of approximately 1.5 square-miles (about four square-kilometres), it was once a very important religious, cultural and commercial centre. Today, the island is covered with ruins from fallen columns, sections of the famous mosaics that adorned the houses of the wealthy, a stadium and seats from a theatre. A row of five marble lions also stands amidst these ruins.

Other interesting monuments found at the site and spread over a wide area include the Agora, the treasuries of the various cities, the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Theatre, the Sanctuary of the Foreign Gods, and the sacred Mt. Cynthus. After your visit, re-board the boat for the approximate 45-minute return ride to Mykonos. Upon arrival, you may opt to return directly to the pier via shuttle bus, or remain in town to explore picturesque Chora and return to the ship on your own.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately two hours, mostly on uneven ground. Exploration of the archaeological site is entirely on-foot. It is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. The trip to-and-from Delos is via local boat on seas that may be choppy at times. Operation of this tour is subject to favourable weather and sea conditions. Air-conditioned coaches are the best available, but not deluxe, and can be described as 'well-travelled', island-style motor coaches. Wear light-weight, comfortable clothing with closed-toe walking shoes, and bring protection from the sun (hat, sunglasses, sun block). There is limited shade at the archaeological site. Restrooms are available at the cafeteria located approximately 975 feet (about 275 metres) from the tender area at Delos; however, the cafeteria is privately owned and might not always be open.
