Silversea Luxury Cruises To MOMBASA

MOMBASA

You may well find yourself in Mombasa for a few hours or an overnight stop. The city (which is actually an island linked to the mainland by a ferry) is the second oldest trade center with Arabia and the Far East. Today it still plays an important role as the main port for Kenya. Although it lacks the beautiful beaches of the north and south, it has a rich, fascinating history. Visit the Old Town with its narrow streets lined with tiny shops and souks (markets). View more

The Old Harbour, frequented by numerous dhows, is an ideal place to arrange a short cruise on one of these local boats that have plied the oceans for centuries. Fort Jesus, designed by an Italian and built by the Portuguese in the late 16th century, is a major visitor draw and well worth a visit. In summer there's an impressive sound-and-light show.

4NT POST-CRUISE: SERENGETI SPLENDOURS

The Serengeti is arguably the most famous national park in the world; it perhaps defines the safari experience as surely as the wildlife that inhabits it. Established in 1951, and covering an area of almost 15,000 square kilometers (5850 square miles), an area comparable to the state of Connecticut or Northern Ireland, the Serengeti hosts a fantastically diverse eco-system. The Serengeti promises all that the first-time game-viewer or experienced safari-hand could ever hope to witness and it rarely, if ever, disappoints.

The Serengeti is arguably the most famous national park in the world; it perhaps defines the safari experience as surely as the wildlife that inhabit it. The famous short and long grass plains of the south slowly unfurl into the Acacia savannah of the central area, the hilly, more densely wooded areas of the north, and the extensive woodland in the western corridor, each with its own resident variations of African wildlife. The principal attraction of the Serengeti is the passing of the wildebeest migration: 1½ million wildebeest, and a retinue comprised of hundreds of thousands of zebra, gazelle and other plains game that follow close behind, stalked by the inevitable predators who make the most of the 'feast' close at hand.

The Four Seasons Lodge perfectly combines the intimacy of a lodge and the indulgence expected of a luxury hotel. Nestled within the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, in the vicinity of the great annual migration, the Four Seasons Lodge is a dream African hideaway offering spectacular views of wildlife, an active watering hole and superior accommodations. Dinner is enjoyed at the lodge.

Note: The precise timing of the Serengeti wildebeest migration is entirely dependent upon the rainfall patterns each year.

DAY 3: SERENGETI

After breakfast, depart on a full day game viewing outing, accompanied by an experienced driver who also serves as your guide, thanks to his or her knowledge of the local area and its wildlife. Lunch boxes are available for a Four Seasons dining experience in the heart of the Serengeti, which is home to millions of stunning wildebeests during the migration period, as well as numerous species of birds and mammals, especially the big cats: leopards, cheetahs and lions.

4NT POST-CRUISE: MAASI MARA

The jewel in Africa's safari crown, Maasai Mara is host to the most spectacular array of wildlife. Her 1510 square kilometers of open savannah, woodlands and tree-lined rivers creates an eco-system that supports huge numbers of bird and mammal species. Lion are found in abundance throughout the park, as are elephant, giraffe, a variety of gazelle species and zebra. Cheetah and leopard are also regularly seen and, if lucky, you may also find rhino.

Please check with your travel professional for details regarding visa and inoculation requirements for Kenya. It is the responsibility of the guest to obtain all appropriate visas before your cruise.

DAY 1 - MOMBASA/ NAIROBI

This morning disembark from the Ship and transfer to Moi International Airport for your flight to Nairobi. You will be met on arrival and transferred to Carnivore Restaurant for lunch. Situated on the edge of Nairobi National Park, the Carnivore is - as the name suggests - a meat eater's paradise. The focal point of the main restaurant is the 'roasting pit' where an enormous variety of both game and domestic meat is roasted on huge metal spears. Delicious sauces and crisp salads accompany the meal. For 'herbivores' there is an extensive vegetarian menu. If you have any room left after the unlimited servings, a variety of sweets are on offer before mugfuls of steaming Kenya coffee herald the end of the meal.

Later visit Karen Blixen Museum and Giraffe Center. Giraffe Centre: is the headquarters for AFEW, the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife. Visitors can watch these gentle giants at eye level from a raised platform and hand-feed them.

Located in Karen, the beautiful Nairobi suburb which was once part of Karen Blixen's vast coffee estate, 'Mbogani' was Karen's home from 1917 until 1931. Visitors have a glimpse of typical colonial life in Kenya at the turn of the twentieth century. As well as many of Karen's original belongings, replicas replace items which have been lost over the years. From the beautiful gardens there are magnificent views of the Ngong Hills, held dear by Karen and described so tenderly in her writings. At the front of the house the original millstone tables can be seen from which Karen conducted much of her farm business.

Dinner tonight is under own arrangements.

DAY 2 - NAIROBI/ MAASAI MARA

After breakfast transfer to Wilson airport for the scheduled flight to Masai Mara.

The jewel in Africa's safari crown, Masai Mara is host to the most spectacular array of wildlife. Her 1510 square kilometres of open savannah, woodlands and tree-lined rivers creates an eco-system that supports huge numbers of bird and mammal species. Lion are found in abundance throughout the park, as are elephant, giraffe, a variety of gazelle species and zebra. Cheetah and leopard are also regularly seen and, if lucky, you may also find rhino.

After your game drive en route to the camp, you will arrive at your luxury tented camp, have time to freshen up, and then sit back and enjoy a mouth watering lunch. You will be able to choose from continental cuisine, as well as sampling a colourful display of fresh Kenyan salads and fruits. After a well deserved siesta, it's time to go out on a full game drive.

On returning to the camp you will have the opportunity for cultural interaction, a Maasai Elder from the local village will be paying you a visit. He will explain all about their daily life, which may seem very primitive to you, but he will very quickly point out that the Maasai are never unhappy with their position in society nor do they suffer from any stress!

DAY 3 - MAASAI MARA

This morning you have the opportunity to go hot air ballooning - an unforgettable experience ! (Optional, subject to availability and at additional cost)

The Mara is magical in the morning; the birds are singing, the morning air smells fresh and cool, and the wildlife is just waking up to greet the day. Sightings tend to be more prolific in the morning, whilst the day is still cool and crisp. The balloon takes off as the sun comes up and you float gracefully over the Mara plains seeing the game from a totally different vantage point, sometimes hundreds of feet off the ground then only 20 feet, skimming the tree tops. After approximately a one hour flight, you will land and be treated to a champagne breakfast, where your eggs are actually cooked using the burners from the balloon…

If you don't feel like the balloon flight, you will still go out on a game drive and link up with the others after breakfast. Then it's more game spotting, on the way back to the camp for lunch. This afternoon your safari driver/guide will direct the game drive in a different direction out onto the plains, to see if you can catch sight of a cheetah mother hunting for her cubs, or maybe the endangered and therefore very rare rhino. Your safari driver/guide will also point out that the late afternoon is a good time to potentially sight that all elusive leopard high up in a tree or possibly sunning itself on a rocky out crop.

This evening will be one of the many highlights of your safari, as you sit down to a Bush Banquet. You will dine out under the star studded African sky.

4NT PRE-CRUISE: SERENGETI SPLENDOURS

The Serengeti is arguably the most famous national park in the world; it perhaps defines the safari experience as surely as the wildlife that inhabits it. Established in 1951, and covering an area of almost 15,000 square kilometers (5850 square miles), an area comparable to the state of Connecticut or Northern Ireland, the Serengeti hosts a fantastically diverse eco-system. The Serengeti promises all that the first-time game-viewer or experienced safari-hand could ever hope to witness and it rarely, if ever, disappoints.

Please check with your travel professional for details regarding visa and inoculation requirements for Kenya and Tanzania. It is the responsibility of the guest to obtain all appropriate visas before your cruise.

As you change planes in Kilimanjaro, you are provided with a packed picnic lunch and assisted toward your onward flight to Serengeti. Please note that you will not likely see Mount Kilimanjaro from the airport, however you may see it during landing or takeoff.

On arrival at Seronera airstrip, you are met and transferred through the renowned Serengeti National Park en route to the Four Seasons Lodge, enjoying a game-viewing drive en-route.

Overnight at the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti.

Dinner is served again this evening at the lodge.

The jewel in Africa's safari crown, Maasai Mara is host to the most spectacular array of wildlife. After your game drive en route to the camp, you will arrive at your luxury tented camp, have time to freshen up, and then sit back and enjoy a mouth watering lunch. You will be able to choose from continental cuisine, as well as sampling a colourful display of fresh Kenyan salads and fruits.

Overnight at the Mahali Mzuri

DAY 3: MAASAI MARA

This morning you have the opportunity to go hot air ballooning - an unforgettable experience!

DAY 4: MAASAI MARA / NAIROBI

There is the option for an early morning game viewing drive. After breakfast transfer to the airstrip for the scheduled flight to Nairobi.

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute transfer to Mombasa's Moi Airport (General Aviation Terminal) and your private, approximately two-hour chartered flight inland, over hills and the vast African plains, en route to Maasai Mara. If the weather is clear, you may see glimpses of the snow-capped, approximately 19,340-foot (about 5,895-metre) Mount Kilimanjaro looming in the distance.

Maasai Mara Game Reserve

This is the Africa of your imagination, where panoramas are vast and groves of acacia woodland provide hiding places for predators. The Mara is considered the finest game sanctuary in the country, home to an astonishing number and variety of animals. Depending on the season, hundreds of thousands of migratory wildebeest, gazelle, and zebra move back-and-forth between the Mara, and plains and woodlands to the south. Late-afternoon and early-morning game drives introduce you to the Mara's wildlife.

First game-drive into the bush

Upon arrival at the Maasai Mara (Kichwa Tembo) Airstrip, board your awaiting, open-air, 4WD safari vehicles and set off into the bush on your first game-drive en route to the lodge. There is no way to predict what you might see, so keep your eyes trained on the bush. Luxuriant forest grows along the banks of the Mara River, where hippos and crocodiles bask in the sun. The trees showing up in the distance may turn out to be a family of giraffes, and what looks like a clump of bushes may be a pride of lions. With a little luck, you may encounter a herd of elephants and rhinos, or watch a family of cheetahs or warthogs cross your path.

Lunch and check-in at the Sanctuary Olonana

After a short game-drive, proceed to the Sanctuary Olonana for lunch and check-in. The Sanctuary Olonana is an award-winning, tented camp at the foot of the impressive Siria Escarpment, close to where the famous last scene from the movie Out of Africa was filmed. The Sanctuary Olonana is immersed in the original bush among indigenous plantations and trees, and offers luxury accommodations built on elevated platforms. The Sanctuary Olonana also overlooks the Mara River, whose gently-flowing waters are surrounded by wildlife and teeming with hippos.

Late-afternoon game-drive

After lunch, a more extensive, approximately two-hour game-drive follows in the late-afternoon. Following your game drive, return to the lodge in time to freshen-up and relax in its ambiance prior to dinner.

Amboseli National Park game-drive

Upon arrival at the Amboseli airstrip, join your awaiting, open-air, 4WD safari vehicles and set off into the bush on a panoramic, approximately two-hour game drive en route to the lodge. Check-in and lunch at the Tawi Lodge

Following this short game drive, check-in at the Tawi Lodge, where lunch is served. The Tawi Lodge is located on a private conservancy of approximately 6,000 acres (about 2,428 hectares) just five minutes from the Kimana Gate, the eastern entrance to Amboseli National Park at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. The lodge is built in a harmonious combination offering modern comfort, yet remaining traditional enough to remind you that you are in Africa. Each cottage has its own wood-decked veranda with views of Kilimanjaro. Tawi cottages also have fireplaces and butlers.

Late-afternoon game-drive

After lunch and some free time at your leisure to relax and enjoy the lodge's facilities, an approximately two-hour game drive follows in the late-afternoon.

Sundowners and light snacks in the bush

Following your game-drive, sundowners and light snacks are served at the Private Tawi Conservancy before returning to the lodge in time to freshen-up before dinner.

Time at leisure to relax at the lodge or take a 'bush-walk'

Following your bush breakfast, return to the lodge for check-out (cottages have to be vacated by mid-morning), with the remainder of the morning at your leisure. You can relax and take advantage of the lodge's facilities, or set out on a 'bush-walk' accompanied by a local, armed Maasai guide.

This tour is not suitable for pregnant guests, guests with neck and/or back problems, guests with heart and/or respiratory conditions, guests prone to motion sickness, guests with limited mobility, and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection, insect repellent, a light jacket, camera, and any necessary medication from the ship; a light jacket is recommended for early-morning game-drives. This is a malaria-risk area; please make sure the necessary medication has been taken. Guests must carry their passports. The open-air, 4WD safari vehicles utilised on this tour are not covered, and guests are therefore exposed to the elements. Although frequently encountered on this type of tour, animal sightings are not guaranteed. Due to the prevailing weather conditions and movement of dangerous wildlife on the Game Reserve, the programme contents and sequence are subject to change by the lodge management without prior notice. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.
