Silversea Luxury Cruises To MANAUS (Amazonas)

MANAUS (Amazonas)

Manaus, the capital of Amazonas State, is a hilly city of around 1.8 million people that lies 766 km (475 miles) west of Santarém and 1,602 km (993 miles) west of Belém on the banks of the Río Negro 10 km (6 miles) upstream from its confluence with the Amazon. Manaus is the Amazon's most popular tourist destination, largely because of the many jungle lodges in the surrounding area. View more

The city's principal attractions are its lavish, brightly colored houses and civic buildings—vestiges of an opulent time when the wealthy sent their laundry to be done in Europe and sent for Old World artisans and engineers to build their New World monuments. Founded in 1669, Manaus took its name, which means "mother of the Gods," from the Manaó tribe. The city has long flirted with prosperity. Of all the Amazon cities and towns, Manaus is most identified with the rubber boom. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries it supplied 90% of the world's rubber. The industry was monopolized by rubber barons, whose number never exceeded 100 and who lived in the city and spent enormous sums on ostentatious lifestyles. They dominated the region like feudal lords. Thousands of seringueiros (rubber tappers) were recruited to work on the rubber plantations, where they lived virtually as slaves. A few of the seringueiros were from indigenous tribes, but most were transplants from Brazil's crowded and depressed northeast. Eventually conflicts erupted between barons and indigenous workers over encroachment on tribal lands. Stories of cruelty abound. One baron is said to have killed more than 40,000 native people during his 20-year "reign." Another boasted of having slaughtered 300 Indians in a day. The 25-year rubber era was brought to a close thanks to Englishman Henry A. Wickham, who took 70,000 rubber-tree seeds out of Brazil in 1876. (Transporting seeds across borders has since been outlawed.) The seeds were planted in Kew Gardens in England. The few that germinated were transplanted in Malaysia, where they flourished. Within 30 years Malaysian rubber ended the Brazilian monopoly. Although several schemes were launched to revitalize the Amazon rubber industry, and many seringueiros continued to work independently in the jungles, the high times were over. Manaus entered a depression that lasted until 1967, when the downtown area was made a free-trade zone. The economy was revitalized, and its population jumped from 200,000 to 900,000 in less than 20 years. In the 1970s the industrial district was given exclusive federal free-trade-zone status to produce certain light-industry items. Companies moved in and began making motorcycles and electronics. In the mid-1990s the commercial district lost its free-trade-zone status. Thousands of workers lost their jobs and businesses crumbled, but the light-industrial sector held strong and even grew. Today it employs over 100,000, has the largest motorcycle factory in South America, and makes 90% of Brazilian-made TVs. Manaus is a sprawling city with a couple of high-rise buildings. There are a lot of hotels and sights are in the small city center (Centro), but the area is congested and not very attractive.

Excursions in MANAUS (Amazonas)

Amazon River - Meeting of the Waters

Venturing into the Amazon tributaries is an experience not to be missed, it will provide a close-up look of what the ecology of the Amazon is all about. Knowledgeable guides will provide information about trees, plants and birds you may encounter during this trip into nature.

River Cruise

Boarding your riverboat pier side, the cruise takes you across the Rio Negro toward a cluster of islands. At a convenient landing stage, you will switch to motorised canoes and cruise the narrow channels in the tropical forest, affording a closer look at this equatorial forest land.

Janauary Ecological Park

Enjoy a visit to one of the most visited Ecological parks in Brazil, known for its diverse variety of plants throughout its landscapes: dry forests, lowlands and flooded intertidal zones. Here, guests can enjoy a short canoe ride to Janauary Lake.

Meeting of the Waters

After returning to the landing, rejoin your riverboat and start cruising back to Manaus. En route, take in the 'Meeting of the Waters'. This natural phenomenon consists of the clear waters of the Rio Negro and the muddy yellow waters of the Solimões flowing side by side for several miles without merging. Later, the two rivers form the Amazon.

Please note: Tour involves a minimal amount of walking. It is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or guests who utilise a wheelchair. Boarding the riverboats and canoes requires balance and is quite difficult. Lightweight clothing, flat-soled shoes, sun protection and insect repellent are recommended. Transportation will be by local riverboat and smaller, motorised canoes. The tour also involves a short walk in the ecological park (optional). Caution is advised when getting in and out of the canoes. A small bar is available on board the river cruise to purchase drinks (one soft drink per person is included, others at guest's expense). Some free time will be made available at the floating barge/restaurant for souvenir shopping.

Caiman Spotting

Discover the reptiles of the Amazon in the evening during this exciting alligator-spotting experience at the Janauary Ecological Park.

Janauary Ecological Park

Depart the pier via riverboat for the approximate one-hour ride across the dense jungle backwaters of the Rio Negro en route to the Janauary Ecological Park. Upon arrival at the park's jetty, disembark the riverboat, then embark a motorised canoe with a glide through the Rio Negro and its countless overgrown tributaries. The jungle becomes alive at night with the mysterious sounds and dark shadows of its nocturnal denizens.

Caimans are close relatives of the alligator that can be found in Central and South America. Like their crocodilian cousins, Caimans live near rivers and other bodies of water. Most caimans are around six or seven feet long, but the largest species, the black Caiman, can grow to a length of 15 feet. The young caiman are much smaller and easier to find.

While the Caiman is hypnotized by the bright light, your canoe will slowly approach it until your guide is close enough to attempt to catch it with his bare hands and actually lift it out of the water for all to see. After closer viewing, the young Caiman will be returned, unharmed, to the water.

After the thrill of this incredible hunt in the dark you will transfer back to the river boat for the return to Manaus.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of activity. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, rubber-soled shoes, and bring insect repellent from the ship. Caution is advised when embarking and disembarking the riverboat and canoe. There is a good chance you will see Caimans on this tour but this cannot be guaranteed. None the less, the thrill of the search in the dark with the night sounds of the animals will be quite an experience.

Jungle Trek

Learn to survive in the wild while gaining a new insight in to the forest during this half-day jungle hike.

Guedes Lake

Board a regional riverboat and cruise the Rio Negro for approximately 45-minutes to reach Guedes Lake. Disembark at the local wooden pier and meet a local with vast experience in jungle survival, for a little talk about the rainforest and what, with luck, will be seen along the trail.

Jungle Trek

Follow your well-trained guide through the jungle trail for a close-up look of the wonderful surroundings. During the walk, there will be several stops in which the guide will explain survival techniques such as how to construct a shelter or find a climbing plant containing drinking water.

After the jungle trek, embark the boat for the return journey to the floating pier in Manaus.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. The river boat is equipped with basic restroom facilities. Sightings of wildlife in their natural habitat cannot be guaranteed. Please be aware that water levels in this area constantly vary, therefore the itinerary is subject to change without prior notice. You may get wet while participating in this tour. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with long trousers and flat-soled, closed-toe, flat non-slip shoes walking shoes, and bring sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat and sunglasses from the ship. Transportation is by local riverboat. Caution is advised when embarking and disembarking the riverboats and canoes.

Pink Dolphin Encounter

Experience the famous and rare pink dolphins from a unique perspective during this panoramic, half-day speedboat excursion to Lake Acajatuba.

Manaus, Speedboat-Ride, Rio Negro, Lake Acajatuba, Lakefront Village, Pink Dolphins

Depart the pier aboard an aluminium speedboat for the scenic, approximately 90-minute cruise up the Rio Negro en route to a community on the shores of Lake Acajatuba. Some years ago, two local girls began feeding the resident, and now very famous, pink dolphins from a floating pier. These beautiful cetaceans have since become very accustomed to having human visitors, and are extremely friendly.

See, Touch and Swim with the Dolphins, Dolphin-Feeding, Free Time, Shopping

Your visit to this lakefront community features a unique opportunity to see, touch and even swim with the dolphins whilst standing on a submerged platform, as your guide hand-feeds these amazing creatures. Following your dolphin encounter, some free time is made available to explore the village and browse for handicrafts. At the conclusion of your visit, embark your speedboat and commence the approximately 90-minute ride back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking for approximately 262 yards (about 240 metres), at times over uneven and natural surfaces, with a few steps to embark/disembark the speedboat and 15 steps to access the village during the dry season. Walking in the local village is at the discretion of each guest. The boating distance between the pier and Lake Acajatuba is approximately 90 minutes in each direction, and very bumpy. This tour is not suitable for pregnant guests, guests with neck and/or back problems, guests with heart and/or respiratory conditions, guests prone to seasickness, guests with limited mobility, and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear a swimsuit under a cover-up with beach or boat shoes, and bring sun protection, insect repellent, a towel and bottled water from the ship. Do not wear sunscreen or jewellery, as these can injure the dolphin's skin. Guests must be at least 12 years old to participate on this tour. Although frequently encountered on this type of tour, wildlife and marine life sightings are not guaranteed. A signed waiver is required to participate on this tour. Operation of this tour is subject to weather conditions.
