The Comores archipelago lies at the entrance to the Mozambique Channel, some 300 miles north of the tip of Madagascar and about the same distance from the East African coast. Geographically, the Comores comprise four islands: Grande Comore, Anjouan, Moheli and Mayotte. Politically, the first three are part of the Federal and Islamic Republic of the Comoros having declared their independence from France in 1975, while Mayotte chose to remain French as a Collectivité Territoriale. This allows the Mahorais to enjoy a legal minimum wage established by France, which is six times the average wage of that of the independent Comoros, as well as surfaced roads, schools and a program to control malaria. Still, Mayotte remains very much a colonial backwater. A detachment of the French Foreign Legion is permanently based at the rocky fortress of Dzaoudzi, Mayotte's military and administrative center located across the channel. Sea horse-shaped Mayotte is the oldest and most southerly of the Comoros. It is split into Grande Terre, the large central island, and the tiny islet of Pamandzi where the airport is located. Mamoudzou on Grande Terre is the island's only town and the major port. A ferry service connects Mamoudzou with Dzaoudzi, the latter of which is sometimes referred to as France's "Rock of Gibraltar." Less mountainous than the three other Comoros islands, agriculture is the basis of the local economy in Mayotte. Ylang-ylang plants cover one third of the arable land. Other crops grown for the domestic market include rice, maize, manioc (cassava), sweet potatoes, bananas and citrus fruits. Tourism is still only a minor component of the local economy. Travelers who have discovered this remote and tropical hideaway will experience a laid-back lifestyle, unspoiled natural beauty and deserted beaches for swimming, snorkeling and diving.

Depart the pier aboard a glass-bottom boat for the picturesque ride to the Barrier Reef. Upon arrival, proceed to the 'Pass en S', a renowned diving location situated directly along the Barrier Reef. As your captain plies the ancient riverbed, learn about this natural marine reserve and view its abundant coral species, colourful fish and diverse marine life. At the conclusion of your visit, commence the return ride back to the pier.

Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with boat shoes, and bring sun protection, raingear and insect repellent from the ship.

Petite Terre Discovery of Small Island

Embrace the incredibly scenic beauty of Mayotte during this memorable, half-day excursion to Petite Terre and the Dziani Lake.

Depart the pier in Grand Terre Island for the short ferry-ride across the channel to Petite Terre Island. Upon arrival at the small island, board your awaiting mini coach.

Local Market

The first stop will be a visit to a local market where you will explore the locally-grown fruit, vegetables and spices, including cassava, or 'maniocs', plantains, cinnamon, vanilla, ginger and more.

Dziani Lake

Proceed driving across the village of Labattoir en route to Dziani Lake. This beautiful volcanic lake is located in an old crater, and filled with emerald green water. The water in the crater is twice as salty as the Indian Ocean, and volcanic gasses bubble through it.

Take a guided walk up to the summit, where some free time is made available to take in spectacular panoramic views of the crater and Grande Terre.

Please note that walking around the crater area is not permitted.

Badamiers

Next, walk back down the path, re-board your coach and proceed to Badamiers, where the road rises gently to a path encircling the lake. Along the way, marvel at the picturesque beauty of Dzaoudzi, Grande Terre in the distance and the turquoise waters of the great north-eastern coral reef.

Local Restaurant

Your drive continues on to a local restaurant, where a refreshment stop is made for fruit juice and a tropical fruit snack. And then take the ferry and commence the short ferry-ride back to the pier in Grand Terre.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking over uneven terrain and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and embark/disembark the ferry-boat. This tour is recommended for guests in good physical condition, and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking (with good grip), and bring sun protection, insect repellent and water from the ship.

Please be advised that the walking level on this tour based on a scale of 1 (easy) to 5 (hike) = Agent indicates 4. Pathways - at the summit conditions vary and can deteriorate from day to day - The last 100 meters to the summit is very steep.

Snorkelling the Crystalline Waters of Mayotte

Explore the exquisite undersea beauty of Mayotte during this unforgettable, half-day beach excursion.

Depart the pier aboard a Zodiac boat for the picturesque ride to one of the pristine snorkelling locales off the north or south coast of the island. Upon arrival, begin your guided snorkelling session in the crystal-clear water. Along the way, marvel at the abundant coral species, colourful fish, marine sponges, shellfish, nude branches, centipedes, and slugs. Assistance is provided on the boat and in the water.

Following your snorkelling session, local fruit juice and light snacks are served on board the Zodiac before commencing the return ride back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of activity, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the Zodiac boat. This tour is recommended for guests who are proficient swimmers, and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear a swimsuit under a cover-up with beach or boat shoes, and bring sun protection, raingear and a towel from the ship. Operation of this tour is dependent on weather conditions.

The South & Coconi

Depart the pier with your local English speaking guide to discover the beauty of the South Eastern coast of Mayotte.

Your first stop is Musical Beach and includes a visit to the biggest Baobab tree on the island located along Bambo Islet.

The majestic baobab tree is an icon of the African continent and lies at the heart of many traditional African remedies and folklore. Native to the African savannah where the climate is extremely dry and arid, it is a symbol of life and positivity in a landscape where little else can thrive. Over time, the Baobab has adapted to its environment. It is a succulent, which means that during the rainy season it absorbs and stores water in its vast trunk, enabling it to produce a nutrient-dense fruit in the dry season when all around is dry and arid. This is how it became known as "The Tree of Life".

Next, drive across the Choungui Pass and enjoy a view of the volcanic mountain named Choungui Peak, one of 11 peaks on Mayotte and ranked the second highest on the island measuring 1,946 feet (593 metres). The highest peak is Mont Bénara however only visible from far out at sea.

Re-board your vehicle and depart for a photo stop at Tahiti Beach to admire the beautiful landscape. Tahiti beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Mayotte with its clear water and sand and location away from noise.

Your next stop will take you inland through lush and green scenery en-route for the Botanical Gardens where you will enjoy local fresh fruit juice and fruits in a beautiful garden setting with scents of spices of the island. Enjoy a folkloric performance by the local women called "Boueni" in their local language. Guests may also stroll the gardens at their own discretion.

At the conclusion of the performance, re-board your vehicle for the approximate 45 minute drive back to the pier in Mamoudzou.

Please Note: This tour requires a minimal amount of activity for approximately 30 to 50 meters (98 to 165 feet) with optional walking within the Botanical Gardens. Guests must be able to get in/out of the vehicle with minimal assistance. This tour is not suitable for guests who are confined to a wheelchair as there are no accessible vehicles on the island. Guest with limited mobility must be assisted by their travel companion. Guests should bring water from the ship as the temperature on the island is quite hot. We recommend guests wear modest and light cotton or linen clothing, flat and comfortable walking shoes, hat, sunglasses, repellent and sunblock.
