Explore the history and culture of one of the world's smallest capital cities during this scenic and informative walking tour of Malé.
Malé is the heart of the nation, and the centre of government and commerce of the Maldives. As you take in the local sights and sounds, your guide will inform you about the island's history and culture, and point out the best sites of interest in town.
After tendering ashore and meeting your guide quayside, your walking tour of Malé commences with a visit to the bustling fish, vegetable and fruit markets near the waterfront. After a taste of local life, your tour continues on towards the shopping area.
The old bazaar and market area is the centre of wholesale and retail trade in the Maldives. The narrow lanes leading through the markets are packed with traders and bustling shoppers, leaving no room for vehicles to pass though.
Your next stop is at the 17th-century Friday Mosque, or 'Huskuru Miskiiy'. Malé's main mosque for nearly four centuries, the Friday Mosque was built in 1656 by Sultan Ibrahim Iskandhar. This intricate building is a masterpiece of coral carving, and a fine example of traditional Maldivian workmanship. After a brief stop at the mosque, your tour continues with a visit to the National Museum & Sultan Park.
National Museum & Sultan Park
Located in Sultan's Park, the National Museum is housed in the only remaining building of the former Sultan's Palace. This Colonial-style building is home to a wide array of historical artefacts and treasures. During your visit, you can view displays of thrones, ceremonial robes, headgear, and umbrellas used by Sultans, along with statues and other figures dating from 11th century.
Time-permitting, visits will also be made to the Presidential Palace and souvenir shops before returning to the ship.
Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking for approximately 500 metres (1640 feet) over uneven surfaces, including some steps. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Passengers must dress in accordance with Muslim traditions, and are required to cover-up the area from the shoulders to the knees.
