Silversea Luxury Cruises To London (Tower Bridge)

London (Tower Bridge)

London is an ancient city whose history greets you at every turn. If the city contained only its famous landmarks—the Tower of London or Big Ben—it would still rank as one of the world's top cities. But London is so much more. The foundations of London's character and tradition endure. The British bobby is alive and well. The tall, red, double-decker buses (in an updated model) still lumber from stop to stop. Then there's that greatest living link with the past—the Royal Family with all its attendant pageantry. To ice the cake, swinging-again London is today one of the coolest cities on the planet. The city's art, style, and fashion make headlines around the world, and London's chefs have become superstars.

Excursions in London (Tower Bridge)

Maritime Greenwich Walking Tour

Discover the rich maritime heritage of Greenwich, the Greenwich Observatory and the Queen's House during this half-day tour.

Depart the pier by coach for the 45-minute drive to Greenwich to start your fascinating walking tour in the shadows of where the beautiful tea clipper Cutty Sark once stood; built to transport tea from China and India to the avowedly tea drinking nation of Britain. Tragically, the ship was badly damaged in a fire 2007 while undergoing extensive restoration and is currently closed to the public.

Greenwich Observatory

A guided walk through the quaint streets and beautiful landscaped park leads to the world famous Greenwich Observatory. The Observatory was founded by order of King Charles II to study to study astronomy and to fix longitude. An inside visit of the Observatory provides a fascinating insight into the history of GMT and also the Prime Meridien. In the Park is the brass strip which marks the Meridian, and those who stand astride it can truly say they are standing in both the Eastern and Western Hemisphere.

The Queen's House

Continue your walk pass the National Maritime Museum and arrive at The Queen's House for a short visit. As the first Palladian building in Britain, it was the direct inspiration for classical houses and villas all over the country in the two centuries after it was built. Commissioned in 1616 by Anne of Denmark, wife of James I, the Queen's House is the masterpiece of the English architect Inigo Jones. Originally the house was used as a private retreat and 'House of Delight', As well as being an architectural gem, the Queen's House is now an active venue for the appreciation and exploration of art and displays the fine collection of paintings owned by the National Maritime Museum, such as works by Canaletto.

Royal Naval College

Following your visit, finish your walk by heading towards the former Royal Naval College, a World Heritage Site reckoned to be the finest and most dramatically sited architectural and landscape ensemble in the British Isles. Founded in 1694 as the Royal Hospital for Seamen, The Old Royal Naval College is a superb example of Baroque landscape. Designed by the greatest architects of the day including Sir Christopher Wren and Hawksmoor, it is now managed by the Greenwich Foundation. Free time will be available here for photos or further investigation independently before re-joining your coach for the return ride to the pier and your awaiting ship.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate to extensive amount of walking and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or guests who utilise a wheelchair. A visit to the Planetarium at the Observatory is not included in this tour.

Panoramic London & Heathrow Transfer

This leisurely half day coach tour is a great way to obtain an overall impression of one of the most lively and interesting cities in the world. A city that welcomes you to its red buses and friendly 'Bobbies', great churches, imposing statues and many elegant pubs.

London and the West End

Commence the tour in the 'City', and then continue to the `West End`, the part of central London west of the City's limits. London would not be London without its captivating `square mile` of old City - the historic and intriguing area around which modern London as we know it has grown and where the medieval and Georgian atmosphere still survives.

Westminster, Whitehall and St. James's

Pass Westminster, Whitehall and St. James's section of London, the coach then crosses Westminster Bridge, and passes by the neo-Gothic Parliament buildings presiding over the banks of the River Thames and its adjacent 320 foot clock tower of Big Ben. From Parliament Square look across to St. Margaret's Church. Standing adjacent is the architectural and masterpiece of the 13th to 16th centuries - Westminster Abbey. It represents a unique pageant of British history as the setting for every Coronation since 1066, and for numerous other Royal occasions. The Guide will point out the main external features of the building and a photo stop is made to take photographs of the outside.

Boarding the coach you will then see Whitehall, passing the end of Downing Street and the Cenotaph war memorial and past Horse Guard's Parade. Afterwards travel along the broad triumphal approach to Buckingham Palace - The Mall which is lined on one side by the delightful St. James's Park, a quiet and relaxed oasis with its flowerbeds and its ducks and pelicans on the lake. James's Palace; still the Court's official headquarters and adjacent Clarence House Clarence House - London home of Prince Charles and Princes William and Harry. Pass the Admiralty Arch which separates courtly London from the hurly burly of Trafalgar Square that stands imposing Nelson's Column.

Afterwards leave the hustle and bustle of central London and head to Heathrow airport to connect with your outbound flight.

Please note: This tour is offered to guests disembarking the ship with flights from London Heathrow International Airport at 3:00pm or later and will end at the airport. It requires a minimal amount of walking. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair; however, guests must be able to embark and disembark the coach via the coach steps. Operation is subject to minimum participation. The tour sequence may vary.
