Silversea Luxury Cruises To LEKNES (Vestvågøy)

LEKNES (Vestvågøy)

Blessed with some of the most spectacular scenery in Norway (and goodness only know that this is land blessed with rolling hills, soaring peaks, valleys, tranquil fjords and white sandy beaches, so the competition is high!), Leknes is what Norway is meant to be. Pretty red houses lay dotted on the green covered hills, and the midnight sun is rises above the horizon from 26th May to 17th July, (while in winter the sun does not rise from 9th December to 4th January). Part of the stunning Lofoten islands, this pretty port offers much in the way of recreation, although understandably most of this is outdoor based. Take a boat ride around the archipelago, try your hand at some deep sea fishing, or simply stroll thought the city centre, perhaps rent a bicycle and discover the hinterland at your own pace. Bikes can be easily rented and note that hybrid and electric bikes are a great option for those who might be a bit out of practice with their pedal power. Gastronomes with a sweet tooth will be rewarded with one simple pleasure: a fresh-from-the-oven skillingsbolle – or big, fluffy cinnamon rolls, fit for indulging in if all the fresh air has made you hungry! Look out for the quirky coffee shops, settle down for some Norwegian kos, say takk for maten and enjoy!

Excursions in LEKNES (Vestvågøy)

Fishing Villages of Lofoten

Explore the local history, villages and landmarks of the Lofoten Islands during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Leaving the small village of Leknes you will drive for approx. scenic 40 minutes' drive through the underwater tunnel to Flakstad Island and on to Nusfjord.

Nusfjord

During your visit at Nusfjord, you will discover why this charming fishing hamlet is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its restored fishing cabins and quaint atmosphere. The local store, situated in one of the old wooden buildings in the center of town, offers not only the necessities of daily life, but also a window onto a time gone by. Nusfjord's heyday isn't entirely in the past, however, as large quantities of fish are still harvested here during the busy Lofoten fishing season, January through April. Step inside one of the old cabins to watch a short film revealing the history of Nusfjord and then enjoy a short walk through the village on your own, with a chance to browse in the local stores.

Flakstad Church

Next, after 20 minutes' drive, you will visit the Flakstad Church, dating back to 1780 it is one of the oldest churches in Lofoten.

The church was built from Russian timber as a result of the Pomor Trade, which was a bartering agreement involving stockfish. The building itself is inspired by the Russian churches and their architectural style from the 18th century.

Vestvågøy

Traveling for 45 minutes' drive on to the southern tip of Vestvågøy, you will visit the fishing village of Ballstad.

This village is home to approximately 1,000 residents and is still an active fishing village with a large fishing fleet. Ballstad boasts a boat yard and a steam processing plant for the production of cod liver oil, and has the world's largest mural, depicting the village of Ballstad in the old days.

At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 440 yards (about 400 metres), at times over uneven surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, and several steps at the church and museum. Walking in the church, museum and fishing village is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not suitable for guests with a fear of tunnels, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable clothing in layers with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection and a weatherproof jacket from the ship. Videography is not permitted inside the Flakstad Church; photography without flash is permitted. The tour sequence may vary. Comfort stop available at Nusfjord.

Lofoten Impressions and Viking Museum

Enjoy a journey across dramatically beautiful lands and into a fascinating past with a visit to the Viking Museum, located on the island of Vestvågøy.

Vestvågøy Island

At the Viking Museum in Borg, you will survey an exhibition of artifacts discovered by archaeologists, as well as recreations of Viking homes. Immersed in the atmosphere of the Viking village, you will become engagingly acquainted with how the Vikings lived a thousand years ago. The idea of the museum is to recreate the atmosphere in a Viking village with handicrafts, buildings, and food typical for the area and era. During your visit the lady of the house will serve you soup, from an old North Norwegian recipe, prepared over an open fire.

Photo Stop of Undstad Village

Continuing on you will make a photo stop at the quaint, picturesque village of Undstad, where approximately 30 houses are built upon a small area to protect each other against stormy weather. Here, the local people make their living from farming and fishing.

Photo Stop of Haukland beach
