The island has a long medieval history as is evident by its architecture as in 1315 the Knights of St. John became the masters of the island and started building the great fortress that today stands at the entrance of the harbour. Pier Information The ship is scheduled to dock at Kos Island Harbor - Red Light. Kos town is located approximately 550 yards from the ship, a short walking distance away. The taxi station is located also in Kos port about 450 yards from the pier. Shopping The island is known for its many shopping opportunities, including souvenirs, clothing and jewelry. Just follow any of the many streets leading away from the waterfront and you will find stores and boutiques of every description. Souvenir shops are open all day. The local currency is the euro. Cuisine Greek cuisine makes much use of olive-oil, garlic and herbs. Fish and seafood feature prominently on many menus as well as traditionally cooked meat dishes. Guests can enjoy local and Greek food in the area restaurants and taverns. Other Sites Asklepion in Platani Village The famous Ancient International institute of Hippocrates and the Asklepios Temple. Hippocrate’s Tree in Kos Town The famous Plane tree, next to the Castle of St John Knights’ and the Ancient Agora. Archaeological sites in Kos Town The Ancient Odeon, the Roman House “Casa Romana”, the Xystos old Gymnasium, the Castle of Antimachia, the Castle of Cefalos Kos Museum The Museum hosts very interesting statues and finds such as the statue of Goddess Artemis, the headless statue of Asklepios, the statue attributed to Hippocrates. Beaches The best beaches are Lambi beach / Tigaki beach. Lambi beach is located 10 minutes driving time from Kos town and Tigaki beach is approximately 20 minutes driving time from town.
