JAKARTA

Glittering skyscrapers of commerce dwarf the tiny fruit stalls that hum with bartering in Jakarta, a sprawling, futuristic city of juxtaposition and contrast. The Old Town of Kota is perhaps the best place to start, sitting close to the port, and retaining the appeal of old Jakarta, before it rushed to join the global business heavyweights. Explore the leafy boulevards, bustling cafes and Kali Besar wooden bridge – which spans the canal, as you experience a living, breathing reminder of the city's Dutch colonial past. Travel to the heart of modern Jakarta, with a call at one of the biggest city plazas in the world - Merdeka Square. Over a kilometre squared in size, the towering National Monument stands a defiant 132 metres tall, and memorialises the quest for Indonesian independence. Rise to the top to experience the thrilling view from the observation deck. You can see as far as Mount Salak to the south on a clear day.

Indonesia in Miniature Park with Lunch

Experience the architecture, culture art and charm of Indonesia in a unique new way during this memorable, full-day excursion to the Indonesia in Miniature Park.

Indonesia in Miniature Park

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive to the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, or 'Indonesia in Miniature Park'. Located on the outskirts of Jakarta, this expansive theme park spans over 247 acres (about 100 hectares), and represents a wonderful way to experience the magnificent archipelago of Indonesia in a single day. All of the Indonesian islands are realistically reproduced in miniature in a central lake, and around the lake are pavilions representing the 34 provinces in Indonesia. Each pavilion is representative of each province from the traditional architectural style in miniature, and features a wonderful display of cultural items and exhibits.

Rumah Gadang and South Sulawesi Pavilions

Upon arrival, take a guided stroll through shaded pathways to explore several pavilions highlighted by unique architecture. Discover the Rumah Gadang Pavilion of West Sumatra, a traditional house in which an entire family lives by longstanding traditions and customs. Next, head to the South Sulawesi Pavilion to view the Tongkonan, or traditional Torajan ancestral houses. They stand high on wooden piles, are topped with a layered, split-bamboo roof shaped in a sweeping curved arc, and adorned with red, black and yellow detailed woodcarvings on the exterior walls. The buffalo horn located on the wooden piles represents the symbol of the society for the people in the Toraja Highland.

Papua Pavilion and Museum Indonesia

Continue on to the Papua Pavilion to explore a Honai. The Honai has been known for ages as the home of the Dani tribe in traditional Jayawijaya, as well as indigenous tribes inhabiting the mountainous region of central Papua. To this day, denizens of the region still build Honai homes in accordance with their cultural traditions. Leaving the Papua Pavilion, a visit is made to Museum Indonesia. Located inside the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, this three-storey edifice was designed in the traditional Balinese architectural style. During your visit, view a vast collection of Indonesian contemporary arts and crafts, traditional costumes from the various regions, puppets, musical instruments, masks, and utensils utilised in daily life.

Hotel Kempinski, Signature Restaurant and Lunch

Following your guided tour of the Indonesia in Miniature Park, re-board your coach and proceed for lunch at the Signature restaurant, which is located in the Kempinski Hotel. After lunch, re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.65 miles (about 1.05 kilometres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and 14 steps at the sites visited. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Guests must be at least six years old to participate on this tour. Space on this tour is very limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Introduction to Jakarta

Explore the history, architecture and landmarks of Jakarta during a scenic, half-day sightseeing excursion to this bustling city and its surrounds.

Jakarta and Sunda Kelapa Harbour

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive to Sunda Kelapa Harbour. This historic, 12th-century port was once used by the Portuguese and Dutch; today, the port functions as an inter-island harbour. Upon arrival, view traditional Indonesian, two-masted sailing ships, or 'phinisi'.

Old Jakarta and Batu Intan Bridge

Next, re-board your coach and continue on to Old Jakarta, once the centre of the walled city of Batavia when it was under Dutch Colonial administration in the 17th century. Upon arrival, a photo stop is made at the Batu Intan Bridge, which was built by the Dutch government. The bridge is made of wood, and had a drawbridge system to lift the bridge when a ship or boat passed by. In Colonial times, ships bringing spices from far flung parts of the archipelago would pass by the Batu Intan Bridge in order to access the warehouses. The Indonesian government have restored and consolidated the bridge, but the leverage system is no longer in use.

Fattahillah Square, Old Batavia and Wayang Museum

Leaving the Batu Intan Bridge, walk on-foot to Fattahillah Square for a stroll around Old Batavia. Many of the original buildings in this designated conservation area are still intact, and plans are afoot to restore the whole neighbourhood. A classical Baroque building houses a history museum charting Jakarta's progress from prehistoric times until Indonesia's independence. Your last stop is at the Wayang Museum, which is devoted to Javanese puppetry. The puppets are used in a traditional form of theatre popular in Java and other islands across the country. View a wide array of exhibits depicting the evolution of the art of puppetry in the islands. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, at times over uneven surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Tour timings may be affected by traffic conditions.

Jakarta Highlights

Experience some of Jakarta's most popular attractions during this half-day sightseeing and shopping excursion.

Taman Fatahillah Square & Puppet Museum

Depart the pier for a scenic, approximately 45 minute drive to Taman Fatahillah Square and Puppet Museum. Taman Fatahillah Square houses three of the most interesting museums in the city. At the Puppet Museum, view some of the thousands of puppets amassed from all over Indonesia; two of the most famous are Wayang Kulit and Wyang Golek

Monas National Monument

Next re-board the coach to the Monas National Monument for a photo stop. This 450-foot-tall (137-metre tall) marble obelisk represents the people's determination to achieve freedom, and is topped by a flame coated with 77 pounds (35 kilograms) of gold.

National Museum

Next visit the National Museum which has the greatest and finest collections such as ceramic, statues and gold.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 656 yards (about 600 metres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and 58 steps at the sites visited. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended.
