Experience the best-preserved moat castle in Europe, along with its museums, collections, parks and gardens, during this fascinating, half-day excursion to Egeskov Castle.


Egeskov Castle

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately one-hour drive to Egeskov Castle, the best-preserved moat castle in Europe. For more than 450 years, Egeskov has stood in its beautiful location in the landscape of southern Funen. Upon arrival, visit the ground floor and first floor of the castle's interior. See the timeline of all of Egeskov's owners and the 'Facts Page', which offers fascinating details such as the fact that the castle has approximately 2,000 window panes. The unique Titania's Palace can now be viewed on the first floor; yet another reason for you to visit and experience the castle first-hand.


Museums

In addition to the castle itself, you can explore one of the many museums, collections, parks and gardens situated around it. You may choose from the Veteran Car Museum, with its many impressive motor vehicles, aircraft and other exciting pieces of hardware, or Motorcycle Museum, which houses northern Europe's largest collection of motorcycles from 1920-1970. Discover life-saving services through the ages at the Falck Museum. The Museum of Horse-drawn Vehicles delves into the earliest days of transportation, and the Doll House Museum displays a collection of large and small dolls depicting princes and princesses. Egeskov Gardens

Egeskov has long been described as 'Denmark's most beautiful garden' and was awarded the 'Havens Dags Pris' in 2006. Each of the garden areas is a source of inspiration and excellent gardening concepts, including roses, mazes and more. You can read more about the individual gardens in 'The Garden Summary', follow the cycle of activities in 'The Gardeners' Year' and gain added insight from 'The History of the Gardens'. The gardens are under constant development, and tended year-round by Egeskov's dedicated gardeners. In addition, you can take a little piece of Egeskov home with you from our Plant Shop. Books and souvenirs are also available at the Castle Shop. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board the coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately one-hour drive to Odense, the largest city on Funen Island. Upon arrival, a visit is made to the little home where Hans Christian Andersen lived with his parents from the age of 2-14. Opened as a museum in 1930, it contains the very humble rooms which comprised the home of the great fairy-tale writer, and to which his dearest memories of childhood are attached.

Afterward, proceed on-foot for a walking tour through the historical streets of Odense's Old City, and a visit Hans Christian Andersen Museum. Here, learn everything about the fantastic life of the writer. The exhibitions offer a unique, in-depth perspective of Hans Christian Andersen as a person, as well as the world he lived in from 1805-1875. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive to Jelling. This historic village is home to Europe's most striking Viking Age monuments; two rune stones erected by kings Gorm the Old and Harald Bluetooth near the Jelling Church, and two large barrows, or mighty royal burial mounds, located to the north and south of the church. Following your visit to the Jelling Monuments, which were classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1994, proceed to the Royal Jelling Visitor's Centre.
