A Taste of Tea

Experience the history of tea and its unique journey from the tree to your cup during this half-day excursion to Ingiriya, located in Western Sri Lanka.

Ingiriya Tea Plantation

Depart the pier for the approximate 2-hour drive to the Ingiriya Tea Plantation .Formerly a British colony known as Ceylon, this small Indian Ocean island is famed for producing some of the finest teas in the world. Since the 1880s, Ceylon tea, the name by which it is still popularly known, has been the country's principal and most famous export; for generations, it has formed the backbone of the Sri Lankan economy, and plays a major part today in the country's fortunes. Arrive at the plantation to a special welcome with garlands made from tea leaves.

Gain firsthand knowledge on how tea is processed - beginning with the plucking from the tea bushes, to the grading of the finished product - as you tour a tea plantation and factory. For guests who would like to purchase some tea, a sales point is available within the complex.

Then, with rubber growing in the same region, you also witness a demonstration of the rubber tapping process by which the latex is extracted from the rubber tree. Colombo's Art & Architecture Medley

This half-day excursion shows you the varied hues of the city, taking you slightly off the beaten track.

Depart the pier for Colombo, capital and major port of Sri Lanka and a fascinating city that links the past with the present. Its culture and art are a unique mix of relics of Portuguese, Dutch and English settlements, blended with Indian influences.

Your tour begins at house number 11, on 33rd Lane, residence of renowned architect, the Late Geoffrey Bawa. It is an architectural bricolage housing arts and artefacts from his collection. This interesting composition in a row of four houses slowly acquired over a period of time, started with the construction of a pied-à-terre in 1958. The final result is an introspective labyrinth of rooms and garden courts which together create the illusion of limitless space. While the main house evokes a feeling of a lost world of verandahs and courtyards, the new tower serves as a periscope with views across the treetops towards the sea.

Re-board the vehicle for a panoramic drive past some of the city's highlights.

Lunch today is at Gallery Café - another legacy of Geoffrey Bawa. His former office now houses the café and art gallery run by Shanth Fernando.

Delve deeper into this culture at the elegant, white, colonnaded National Museum, the largest museum in Sri Lanka. View the fascinating and sometimes scary mask collection, which has its share of demons, including Prince Maha Kola, wearing a diadem of interwoven snakes. Another gallery contains a display of outstanding Hindu and Buddhist bronzes. One group of statuettes is connected with the cult of Shiva, and includes a fine sculpture of Shiva as "lord of the dance." Some of the images are mobile - not intended to be worshipped in the most sacred places, but destined for ritual processions around the temple or through the streets of the town. The museum also houses a collection of the regalia of the last King of Kandy.

At the conclusion of the tour, drive past the Colonial heritage of Colombo - the Old Parliament and government buildings; Galle Face Green where Colombo high society once strolled, to see and be seen by those who mattered, against the backdrop of the neo-classical facades of the Colombo Club and the Galle Face Hotel. Today there are joggers who talk politics and business as they run, and there may be kite flyers trying to catch a breeze.

Please note: This excursion requires an extensive amount of walking for approximately 240 yards (219 metres) over unpaved and some cobblestone surfaces with approximately 35 steps at Geoffrey Bawa's residence, and 30 steps at the National Museum. It is not suitable for guests who utilise a wheelchair or those with limited mobility. Comfortable walking shoes and lightweight clothing and sunscreen are recommended. Vehicles used are the best available in the city; they are not of the same standards as vehicles found in Western countries. Leave jewellery and all valuables on-board. Expect crowds at the sites visited. Bring local currency for any purchases. Souvenir shops accept cash in US Dollars, Pounds, Euros and local currency. Credit cards are accepted at some, but not all shops. At some sites, depending on traffic and parking conditions, it may be necessary to cross busy streets. Sites may also be crowded and guests need to exercise caution. Photo and video taking is prohibited in certain areas of Geoffrey Bawa's residence. Shoes must be removed prior to entering Geoffrey Bawa's residence. At the National Museum there is a charge of US 3.00 (at time of printing) for pictures and USD 18.00 (at time of printing) for videos, to be paid directly to the museum. Photos of the government building and old Parliament are prohibited. Order of sites may be reversed.

After breakfast drive to Anuradhapura Air Base for your helicopter flight to Sigiriya and its colossal Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. A MI-17 helicopter, with a maximum capacity of 26, will be used.

Standing 200 meters high, the rock fortress was built by King Kassyapa I in the 5th Century AD and was a royal citadel for more than 18 years. It is a complex of buildings, part royal palace and part self-contained town with the famous Lion Gate, water gardens, boulder gardens, walls and moats on par with the best in the ancient world. In a sheltered pocket approached by a spiral stairway are the famous Sigiriya frescoes, 21 figures of females depicted as rising from the clouds, some of the earliest surviving pictorial art in Sri Lanka. The poems inscribed on the rock by admirers of the frescoes, and known as the 'Sigiri graffiti,' are among the most ancient texts in the Sinhalese language.

Anuradhapura is Sri Lanka's first capital kingdom and was founded in the 5th Century BC according to the ancient Sinhalese Chronicle 'Mahavansa'. The construction of reservoirs, canals and irrigation channels during this period exhibited an amazing engineering knowledge. The unique feature of Buddhism in Sri Lanka is the Stupa (Dagoba), usually a curved dome which enshrines relics of Lord Buddha and objects of veneration. At Anuradhpaura there are three magnificent stupas to be found dating back to 3rd - 4th century AD. One is even said to have been taller than pyramid of Giza.

With its white sandy beaches and 100 km canal running through it, this is certainly another side to Sri Lanka. Overnight: Taj Mahal Hotel, New Delhi

DAY TWO - DELHI - VARANASI

A light breakfast is served very early (5:00 - 5:30am) before your transfer to the airport for your flight to Varanasi.

Varanasi is probably the place in India that has the most profound impact on visitors. Formerly known as Benares, it sits on a bend of the River Ganges, and its spiritual significance comes from its status as a "crossing place", where gods and goddesses can descend to earth. It has been a pilgrimage site since the sixth century BC. Hindus try to visit at least once in their lifetime to pray and bathe in the holy river. The Old City is a maze of tiny alleys. It has several temples, including the Golden Temple - which is only accessible to Hindus - and many cows, which have traffic priority!

Upon arrival you will be met and proceed for a tour of the city. (A snack box will be provided.) Explore Varanasi with a city tour taking in the old with the new. Visit Durga Temple, one of the most important in Varanasi, built in the 18th century and colored ochre red. Varanasi has always been associated with philosophy and wisdom and a stop outside the Benares Hindu Museum will be made.

Continue to your hotel for check in, after which lunch will be served. The remainder of the afternoon is at your leisure

This evening visit the banks of the river Ganges and the Ghats (stairways leading down to the river) to watch the evening Aarti ceremony. Aarti, a ritual of light (lamp) and music (bell) is an important part of Hindu worship. Hindu gods and goddesses are imagined as kings & queens where every day as human beings they wake up in the morning, take a bath, get dressed, work and in the night go to sleep. Hindus see the Ganges as a goddess and, in the holiest of holy cities the goddess Ganges is given a wake-up call in the morning and a ceremonial farewell in the evening. The ceremony begins at dusk with five priests starting the Aarti on the main Ghat. It is a beautiful, resonant, and majestic spectacle with a very precise choreography involving rituals performed by several priests with the sound of bells, drums, cymbals, and Sanskrit mantras.

Return to hotel where dinner will be served.

Overnight: The Taj Gateway Hotel, Varanasi

DAY THREE - VARANASI

An early start to the morning begins with a boat cruise along the Ganges. There are more than 100 Ghats along the river all dotted with temples, the holiest places within the city. As the sun is rising, the Ghats are bathed in a crimson light beckoning people to offer their morning prayers or bathe in the sacred water.

It is at the Ghats where you can see life and death come together. While the most popular Ghats such as Dasawamedh, Kabir and Assi are used for bathing, there are also several cremation Ghats where the dead are cremated in public. Accompanying you on your river cruise will be a local priest who will explain the significance of the public cremation. The main cremation Ghat is Manikarnika and this is where you will disembark your cruise.

A walk through the narrow alleys and maze of lanes will be a memorable experience as you lose yourself and soak up a city waking up to the new day. Return to the hotel for breakfast and time to freshen up.

Then take the short journey out of the city to Sarnath, This holy place of pilgrimage was previously known as Mrigadava or deer park. It was here that Buddha came after achieving enlightenment and is one of four Buddhists pilgrim sites sanctioned by Buddha himself. On arriving in Sarnath he sought out his five companions to whom he taught what he had learned and they also became enlightened. This is known as "turning of the wheel of the Dharma" and also marks the founding of the community of monks.

Explore the ancient ruins of Sarnath where only the foundations remain after being destroyed by the Turks. The most notable is the

Dharmarajika Stupa, dating back to 200 BC, where it is said that Buddha delivered his first sermon. There is an archaeological museum which houses over 300 pieces of Indian art and six national temples which have been built by various communities since the site's restoration including Tibetan and Sri Lankan Temples.

Return to hotel for lunch and enjoy some free time to explore on your own this afternoon.

Both the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1983. There are few places in the world that compare with the Pink City of Jaipur, where you stay on this magical journey into India's wonders.

These outstanding attractions are amongst India's 'jewels in the crown', drawing thousands of visitors each year from all over the globe. From the magnificent and timeless beauty of the Taj Mahal to the imposing Agra Fort and the shimmering buildings of the 'Pink City', guests are able to enjoy a treasure trove of unforgettable sights that will enthral even the most jaded traveller.

DAY ONE - Colombo / Delhi

Depart the ship and transfer to the Colombo airport for a scheduled flight to Delhi of just over 3.5 hours in length. A light snack/lunch is served in-flight. Upon arrival, you are met and taken to The Oberoi Gurgaon for check-in. The five-star Oberoi Gurgaon is located near the airport so less time is spent transferring to/from the property for a simple overnight stay. Dinner is served at the hotel.

Overnight accommodation at The Oberoi - Gurgaon (Delhi).

DAY TWO - Delhi / Jaipur

After an early breakfast and check out, depart the hotel and return to the airport for your onward flight to Jaipur. At the end of your short, one hour flight, you are welcomed to Jaipur. The Pink City glows with a singular beauty derived from the shimmering pink sandstone used everywhere in its construction. The effect of this glorious extravagance, most especially at sunset, has enchanted visitors for centuries. This afternoon a tour of the city awaits you. Nestled in the Aravali Hills, the city was built in 1727 to the highest standards of city planning. Its founder was Jai Singh II, an extraordinary man who was not only a Prince, but also a military champion of his people and a dedicated astronomer who built advanced observatories in Jaipur, Delhi and elsewhere in India.

Your first stop is the mesmerising City Palace. In an unending series of delights, from its grand aged entrance to the play of ornamental fountains, the City Palace is a dazzling showplace of Hindu and Mughal architecture. Amongst the pleasures of the Palace is a museum with ample evidence of opulence. Visit the neighbouring Jantar Mantar, the Observatory. Built from 1728 to 1734 by Maharaja Jai Singh, Jantar Mantar was constructed on a grand scale and was way ahead of its time.

Your hotel tonight is the Rambagh Palace Hotel. From the home of the queen's favourite handmaiden, to royal guesthouse and hunting lodge, and later as the residence of the Maharaja, Rambagh Palace, the 'Jewel of Jaipur' has stepped gracefully through many royal transitions. Its elegant rooms, marbled corridors and majestic gardens echo with history, and every corner has a story to tell. The sprawling hotel was built in Indo-Saracenic style and served as a royal residence for many years before being converted into one of the country's premier hotels. Dinner is served in the hotel.

DAY THREE - Jaipur / Agra

After another early breakfast commence the journey to Agra, a drive of approximately 5 hours with rest stops en route. As the capital of the Mughal dynasties in the 16th and 17th centuries, Agra also was the repository of many of the Mughal's most famous monuments. The city has long astonished visitors with sites that date back to the height of the Mughal Empire.

Proceed directly to The Oberoi Amarvilas, located a mere 650 yards (600 metres) from the Taj Mahal, thus offering you a first glimpse of the stunningly beautiful mausoleum. Check-in and enjoy lunch at the hotel. Afterward, begin your afternoon at Agra Fort, the town's second most important attraction. The massive fort contains within its 1.5 mile-long (2.5 km-long), red sandstone walls the imperial city of the Mughal rulers. It comprises fairy-tale palaces, audience halls and two beautiful mosques. Founded in the 16th century, the vast complex experienced many additions by subsequent rulers. Here Shah Jehan was held captive by his son and spent his days gazing out from his room toward the Taj Mahal across the river.

Leave Agra Fort and return for a sunset visit to the Taj Mahal - Shah Jehan's enduring monument to love. The unique beauty of this magnificent mausoleum in pure white marble provides a breathtaking image as soon as you emerge from the arched entry gateway. Emperor Shah Jehan, fifth of the great Mughal emperors was devoted to his wife Mumtaz Mahal, meaning literally jewel of the palace. She died at the age of 39 giving birth to their fourteenth child. The shah envisioned a memorial that would surpass anything the world had ever seen. Thousands of labourers and skilled craftsmen from Persia, Turkey, France and Italy were commissioned to construct this incredible masterpiece. The rays of the setting sun make the monument a wonder to behold. You can enter the mausoleum and stroll around the extensive grounds.

Return to the hotel, where dinner is served.

DAY ONE - Colombo / Delhi

Enjoy a leisurely morning onboard Silver Whisper. After an early lunch, transfer to the airport for the scheduled flight (approximately 3.5 hours) to Delhi. An in-flight snack is served. Upon arrival, you are met and transferred to your hotel where dinner will be served.

Overnight Taj Mahal Hotel - New Delhi

DAY TWO - Delhi / Amritsar

Following an early breakfast, return to the Delhi airport for the short (1hour) flight to Amritsar. The city of Amritsar is synonymous with the Mecca of the Sikh faith - the Golden Temple. It stands as a beacon of faith in the middle of a busy, bustling city that is also a major commercial center of Northern India. A whole world of turn-of-the-century architecture, chaotic streets and peaceful lagoons wait to be discovered in this city of living history.

Your local escort will meet you at the airport, and assist with your transportation to your hotel for the next two nights. Settle in and freshen up before lunch is served at the hotel.

After lunch, an hour's drive brings you to Wagah border. This is the only border crossing between India and Pakistan. The spectacle you will witness as the sun is setting brings history to life. For many decades, every evening, soldiers from both sides lower their respective country flags and walk through no man's land into each other's territories. With loud music and dancing on the Indian side the flag lowering ceremony begins. The goal of each side's soldiers is to out-march, out-salute and out-shout each other. This certainly is different from any ceremony you'll see at home!

Return to Amritsar and relax a bit before dinner is served at the hotel.

Overnight Taj Swarna Hotel - Amritsar

DAY THREE - Amritsar

Start your day with breakfast at the hotel. Then meet your guide and proceed for a heritage walk negotiating through the narrow lanes on the old part of the city. Busy, colorful markets and all manner of local life is on full display. Your walking tour concludes at the Golden Temple where thousands of worshippers flock in the light of day.

The city was founded by Ram Das, the fourth Sikh Guru, while excavating the holy tank that is at the center of the shrine complex. The temple, which is clad in gold and marble, is truly a sight to behold. Note: All visitors to the temple must cover their head with an appropriate covering (hat or scarf). You can expect this area to be very crowded.

Thereafter proceed to Jallianwala Bagh, where you can pay your respects to the martyrs of the Indian freedom struggle. During the era of British rule in India, General Dyer opened fire on local citizens at this very place in April, 1913, causing a massacre and huge national outcry. It is now a moving memorial park, with its walls that bear the bullet marks of the tragedy. Relive history as you read first-person accounts, flip through photos and old newspaper articles in the small but true-to-life gallery in the park.

Return to the hotel for lunch. This afternoon affords you some free time to explore on your own. Your guide will be happy to help you plan local shopping or sightseeing according to your interest. As the afternoon comes to a close, gather again at your hotel and return to the Golden Temple, now illuminated in the gathering twilight.

Return to the hotel and enjoy your final dinner in Amritsar.
