Glengariff, Bantry Bay and Town, and Bantry House Tour

Depart Glengariff for the scenic, approximately 30-minute coastal drive to Bantry, This delightful town is nestled beneath sheltering hills at the head of Bantry Bay, one of the most beautiful bays along the Irish coast. Upon arrival in Bantry, proceed to the Bantry House & Gardens. The late-17th-century, three-storey Bantry House is the ancestral home of the Earls of Bantry, and still occupied by the Egertin Shelswell-White family to this day. Bantry Gardens Tour

Next, proceed for a self-guided tour of the beautiful gardens. The structure of the gardens as we know them today also dates back to the second Earl of Bantry's travels. Both he and his wife, Mary, travelled with notebooks and sketchbooks at-hand, which helped to transform the small house at home into a 'palazzo' comparable to those he had seen on the continent. He terraced the land above-and-below the house, which features seven terraces in all, with the house sitting on the third terrace. A parterre facing south surrounds a wisteria circle, which, in turn, surrounds a fountain. From here rises the famous Hundred Steps, a monumental staircase built of local stone, and set amidst azaleas and rhododendrons. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, at times over uneven and gravel surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, three steps at the entrance to Bantry House and 33 steps inside the venue.
