Archaeological remains from ancient Rome, art-stuffed churches, and the treasures of Vatican City vie for your attention, but Rome is also a wonderful place to practice the Italian-perfected il dolce far niente, the sweet art of idleness. Following your visit, proceed to a local restaurant for a light Italian lunch. After lunch, walk to the Pantheon for an interior visit to of the best-preserved building from ancient Rome. This magnificent, 1st-century temple was converted into the Church of Santa Maria ad Martyres in the 7th century. The Pantheon is also the burial place of the great artist, Raphael.

Church of S. Luigi dei Francesi, Caravaggio Paintings, Piazza Navona, Fountain of the Four Rivers

Leaving the Pantheon, walk to the Church of S. Luigi dei Francesi, a church serving Rome's French community since 1589. This opulent church is home to a celebrated trio of Caravaggio paintings; the Vocazione di San Matteo (Calling of Saint Matthew), the Martirio di San Matteo (Martyrdom of Saint Matthew) and San Matteo e l'angelo (Saint Matthew and the Angel), known collectively as the 'St. Matthew Cycle'. Following your visit, head to Piazza Navona and walk through the square, said to be the most beautiful in Rome. Some free time is made available here to photograph the Fountain of the Four Rivers, a fountain sculpted by Bernini that represents the four great rivers of the world. At the conclusion of your visit, walk to the coach pick-up point and commence the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 2.2 miles (about 3.5 kilometres), at times over uneven and cobblestone surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and at the sites visited. Etruscan Countryside & Olive Oil Tasting

Experience the spectacular history and flavours of Old Italy during this half-day excursion to the Etruscan countryside. The walled Etruscan city of Tuscania is a charming medieval town nestled in the Italian hillside outside of Rome.

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive through the Etruscan countryside, and then proceed to the top of a rocky hill for a visit to the small town of Tuscania.

Tuscania

Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour through the narrow, cobbled lanes of Tuscania's medieval centre, which is still surrounded by walls and towers. The Tuscia region was the cradle of Etruscan civilisation, and pre-dates the emergence of the Roman Empire. This ancient town was partly-destroyed by a severe earthquake in 1971. Since then, the houses have been rebuilt or restored, and Tuscania has regained its former appearance.

Farmhouse Visit

After a photo stop in a Tuscania, re-board your coach for the brief drive to Casale Bonaparte Farm (or similar), a family-owned farm that produces olive oil, a variety of vegetables and jam. Upon arrival, the owner explains the process of olive oil production, an Etruscan tradition that dates from ancient times. Sample different olive oils served with typical bruschetta bread, and accompanied by tomatoes, cheeses, salami and local wine.

Following your visit, re-board your coach for the approximately 45-minute return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.5 miles (800 metres) over some level, cobblestone, and uneven surfaces with 15-30 steps to climb. Roma on Your Own

BODY>

Discover Rome at your own pace during a full day of independent exploration and shopping in the 'Eternal City'. Rome contains the highest concentration of historical and architectural riches in the world. The historical centre, outlined by the enclosing Aurelian Walls, layering nearly three thousand years of antiquity, is an invaluable testimony to the European western world's cultural, artistic and historical legacy. Rome is also the heart of Catholic Christianity, it is the only city in the world to host an entire foreign state within its confines, the enclave of the Vatican City, and it is for this very reason that it is often referred to as the capital of two States.

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 1.5-hour drive to Rome.

Rome

Upon arrival in the city, leave the coach at Vatican City and proceed on-foot with your tour escort to St. Peter's Square. This central location is an easy gateway to Rome's main attractions and shopping streets. Armed with a city map and directions from your escort, the remainder of your day in Rome is made available for shopping, exploration and lunch on your own.

At the appointed time, meet your escort back at St. Peter's Square, walk to the coach pick-up point and commence the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to the pier. To ensure a prompt departure, please return to the meeting point on time.

In order to maximise your time in the 'Eternal City', the Hop-on, Hop-off and a fast track for the Vatican Museum will be made available for purchase during the transfer to Rome, and billed to your onboard cabin account (based on local conditions).

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.6 miles (about 1000 metres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. Walking in Rome is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility, but is not wheelchair-accessible. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. If Guests wish to visit St. Peter's Basilica, please note there are approximately 40 steps. Proper attire that covers shoulders and legs must be worn by both men and women in St. Peter's Basilica: mini-skirts, shorts and capri pants are not acceptable. In addition visitors are often required to check large bags, video cameras and bottled water at a desk. You might encounter considerable crowds and lines at St. Peter's Basilica. Be aware that the Basilica might close for security reasons at any given time without advance notice. Flash photos are not permitted inside the Vatican Museum. The Vatican Museum is closed on Sundays and religious holidays. During the transfer to Rome, guests may purchase a "fast pass" to enter the Vatican Museums which offers reduced waiting times. Tickets are $37 (price to be reconfirmed) per person and may not always be available, even if the Vatican is opened. Pricing is subject to change without notice. Silversea is not affiliated with the Vatican Fast Pass ticket operation. Guests may also purchase tickets for the locally-operated Hop-On/Hop-Off city tour, to be used during free time. Tickets are $27 (price to be reconfirmed) per person and may not always be available. Pricing is subject to change without notice. Hop-On/Hop-Off is independently operated and not affiliated with Silversea Cruises. Please sign for any optional tickets purchased; tickets prices will be charged to your shipboard account. Please be aware that ongoing restoration work is often being carried out at the various venues visited. No backpacks, suitcases, trolleys or large bags/objects are allowed inside the Colosseum and lockers are not available. There is a safety restriction at the Colosseum and a limit of 3000 visitors who can visit at a time; if this limit is reached the access will be denied until safety conditions will be guaranteed again.
