Wye Valley Drive

Depart for the scenic, approximately two-hour drive to the Tintern Abbey. Along the way, pass through the town of Chepstow before entering the Wye Valley, one of the most dramatic and scenic locales in southern Britain. This world-renowned protected landscape, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, straddles the English and Welsh borders, and is home to a picturesque, 44-mile (about 72-kilometre) stretch of the River Wye.


Tintern Abbey and Afternoon Tea

Upon arrival in Tintern, proceed for a brief stop and afternoon tea at the Tintern Abbey. Founded on 9 May 1131, the Cistercian abbey of Tintern is one of the greatest monastic ruins of Wales and the country's first Cistercian foundation.


Monmouth Town and Forest of Dean

Next, re-board your coach for the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier. En route, pass through the ancient market town of Monmouth before continuing to Ross-on-Wye and returning via the Forest of Dean. The Royal Forest occupies a 204-square-mile (about 528-square-kilometre) area in the western part of Gloucestershire, and includes 20 million oak, beech, ash, birch, and holly trees. In 1939, it became the first park in England to be designated as a National Forest. Your tour concludes back at the ship in Cardiff.

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive to the Rhondda Heritage Park. The park is an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH), which is based at the former Lewis Merthyr Colliery in Trehafod. One of the top heritage and cultural visitor attractions in South Wales, it provides an informative insight into the cultural history of the area.


Walking Tour and Bertie Winding House

Upon arrival, proceed to the Visitor's Centre and meet an ex-miner, who escorts you on a guided tour of the Pit Head buildings and Bertie Winding House. Here, a multimedia exhibition takes you back in time to the start of mining in the Rhondda Valley, and teaches you about the history of Lewis Merthyr Colliery, Tynewydd mining disaster and important figures in South Wales' coal-mining history.


Lamp Room and Underground Tour

Next, head to the Lamp Room for your safety instructions, then don your mining helmet, enter the 'cage' and descend to the 'pit-bottom' to experience the life of a coal miner. Touch the machinery, hear the detonation of explosives, and smell and even taste the changing atmospheric conditions and humidity of life underground. City Walking Tour and Bath Abbey

Upon arrival, take a panoramic drive through the city, passing by the charming, 18th-century Pulteney Bridge and honey-coloured Georgian houses that form an elegant backdrop to city life. After a refreshment stop, take a guided walking tour through the heart of the city. Pass by museums, cafes and enticing shops en route to the Bath Abbey, a site of Christian worship since 676 A.D. Following a brief visit, proceed on-foot to the nearby Roman Baths.

Highlights include the National Museum Wales, City Hall, Millennium Stadium, Wales Millennium Centre, Y Senedd, the Parliament building for the National Assembly for Wales, Llandaff Cathedral, Seat of the Bishop, and the Archbishop of Wales, a place of worship since 570 A.D.
