Silversea Luxury Cruises To BANJUL

BANJUL

A British Army captain created Gambia’s capital city in 1816 as a means to stop the European and American slave trade in the area. Barracks were the first residences, but the post grew quickly. Today, the King Fahad Mosque’s twin minarets mark the large city’s skyline. Shopping at the public market is a main attraction. Banjul is also a popular base from which to head out for tropical bird watching trips. Daily life is colorful here. View more

Expect beggars, hagglers and lots of unsolicited hellos from "bumsters," young men who hang around tourists a little too much.

Excursions in BANJUL

Gambia's Flora & Fauna

Discover Gambia's paradise of flora and fauna on this half-day nature walking tour. Depart the pier for the approximate 20 minute drive to Denton Bridge where you will embark the Gambian local pirogues for a slow cruise through the creeks towards Lamin Lodge. During the cruise coffee and fruit will be provided. Enjoy the sights and keep your eyes open for wildlife.

Upon arrival to Lamin Lodge, disembark the pirogues and continue by coach to Abuko Nature Reserve. At Abuko Nature Reserve enjoy a 2 hour moderate-paced forest walk. More than 500 birds live in the reserve as do monkeys and crocodiles. Finish by a stop to the Eagle Eights for a flying demonstation.

At the conclusion of the tour board the minibus for the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.

Please Note: This tour requires an extensive amount of walking for approximately 2 hours at a moderate pace. Much of the terrain is unpaved and uneven surfaces. We recommend wearing light clothing and comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, repellent, hat & glasses. Although the wildlife mentioned is frequently spotted on this excursion, their cooperation cannot be guaranteed.

Highlights of Banjul

Discover Banjul on this introductory excursion that highlights the area sites.

Albert Market

Walk through this colourful market and catch a glimpse of both the household items and souvenirs offered here. Bargaining is expected. Look for clothing, batiks, crafts and keepsakes, before driving to the Banjul National Museum. Pause to take photos of the July, 22 Arch that commemorates the 1994 bloodless coup.

Banjul National Museum

The exhibits at the Banjul National Museum focus on the contributions made by Gambians to the arts, religion, politics, sports and technology. Photos, map and archaeological finds help describe the African peoples and their colonial period of history. Next, travel to the Crocodile Pool of Bakau. Stop to take a few pictures before continuing on to the town of Serrekunda.

Serrekunda

Also spelled Serekunda and meaning "the home of the Sere family", this is the largest town in Gambia. It is really nine smaller villages that have merged over the years. Visit the tie dye and batik factory and see the design, waxing, and boiling of the fabrics. Afterwards, return to the ship.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking for approximately 546 yards (500 metres), some of which is over unpaved or uneven surfaces therefore it is not suitable for guests who utilise a wheelchair. There are few steps to climb. It is recommended to wear sun protection, repellent, hat, sunglasses & comfortable walking shoes. Order of sites may vary. No photos are allowed at the museum.
