Karen Hansen, Musician and Music Educator
Karen Hansen enriches our enjoyment of music by sharing her insider’s experience as both performer and teacher. Full of musical examples, her presentations reveal how great composers have depicted the sea, and they explore the traditional, classical, and popular music of our destinations.
The principal clarinetist of the Bloomington Symphony and Mississippi Valley orchestras and a clarinetist with the Dolce Wind Quintet and the Rochester Symphony Orchestra, Karen teaches clarinet and saxophone at Cadenza Music and St. Paul Academy in St. Paul, Minnesota. Her freelance work also includes performances for Minnesota Public Radio, Rochester Choral Arts Ensemble, the Schubert Club, and Thursday Musical.
Karen’s favorite gigs have included playing in concert with the Moody Blues and performing in Merce Cunningham’s OCEAN, acclaimed by The New York Times and The Washington Post and named to the Los Angeles Times top ten Best in Classical Music 2008. As well as earning a BA from St. Olaf College and an MA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she has studied British wind music in London and performed in a master class with world-famous clarinetist Richard Stoltzman.
