John Foley, Capt., Great Barrier Reef Pilot, Lecturer
Captain John Foley is a Great Barrier Reef pilot who combines his professional pilotage with informative lectures. He has travelled on several Silversea ships over the years, both as pilot and lecturer, and will be well known to many past guests on South Pacific cruises. In mid 2012, Captain Foley celebrated 37 years as a Great Barrier Reef pilot.
His lecture program has developed and expanded over the years and now includes such topics as the Great Barrier Reef, Torres Strait, Captain James Cook, the Bounty saga, Longitude, etc.
In addition to being a Pilot, John is a consultant to cruise ship operators on Great Barrier Reef itineraries and destinations. He has personally developed several new cruise ship destinations in Great Barrier Reef waters. He is a director of Portside Wharf, Brisbane’s first dedicated cruise terminal, which opened in August 2006.
He is Australian Reef Pilots’ cruise ship coordinator. His duties include coordinating a group of 12 specialist cruise ship pilots; coaching and encouraging them to develop professional-standard talks and lectures.
