Robert Schrire, Ph.D, Professor, Author, Journalist, Africa Expert

Robert Schrire was born in Cape Town where he is holds the Chair of Political Studies and is the Director of the Institute for the Study of Public Policy at the University of Cape Town.  He is also a part-time professor at Princeton University.  He was a student activist in South Africa during the apartheid years and went into exile in the US where he was educated at several universities including Columbia University and the University of California where he obtained his doctorate. 

Robert has successfully combined an academic career with the role of a public intellectual and educator.  He is perhaps best known as the original host of the television program Talking Politics and had a regular column in The Sunday Times for several years.

He has been much in demand as a public commentator and his views have been published in newspapers and magazines such as Time, Newsweek, The Economist and The Washington Post.  He has made regular appearances on many US and British television programs including Nightline and NBC and was the BBC's chief analyst during South Africa's first democratic elections.  He has worked closely with many prominent TV personalities including Ted Koppel and David Dimbleby.  He has also been a consultant to the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations and was the expert witness for many dramatic trials including the bombing of Planet Hollywood in Cape Town and the case of the Russian navy spy commander.


Robert's areas of expertise include African and South African Politics, the Rise of China, Globalization, the Future of American Power, and related topics derived from his highly acclaimed series, developed for the CEOs of major corporations, entitled Our Changing World: Thinking About the Future.

Although he holds the Chair of Politics at the University of Cape Town, he has been a visiting professor at a wide range of institutions including Johns Hopkins, the University of Kent, Pierre Mendes University in Grenoble, Sciences Poliitique in Paris, and the University of Western Australia.


He has written or edited a large number of books including Critical Choices for South Africa, and Wealth or Poverty?.
