Bali really is as alluring as everyone says. This island, slightly bigger than Delaware, has it all: beaches, volcanoes, terraced rice fields, forests, renowned resorts, surfing, golf, and world-class dive sites. But what sets Bali apart from other nearby tropical destinations is Balinese tradition, and villagers dedicated to celebrating it. The hundreds of temples, dances, rituals, and crafts linked to their ancient Hindu faith aren't a show for tourists, but a living, breathing culture in which visitors are warmly received by the Balinese, who cherish their own identities.

The port of Tanjung Wangi on the eastern tip of East Java provides access to the culture-rich city of Banyuwangi; the capital city of the regency of the same name. Tanjung Wangi is an active port hosting a ferry service between the islands of Java and Bali. It is also the main jumping-off point for the Baluran and Alas Purwo National Parks. The port is located in a volcanically active area below the breathtaking Ijen plateau with its stunning mountainous scenery.
Located on the northern coast of East Java, Pasuruan City lies just adjacent to its more rural but separate counterpart, Pasuruan Regency (in Indonesia, regencies are rural areas while cities are more densely populated, with each possessing their own local government systems). Predominantly Muslim, Pasuruan City is graced with beautiful examples of Islamic architecture, including the Masjid Kota (city mosque). The city was established in 1707 by the Dutch, who established a fort (called Pasoeroean). The transfer of the city to Malang in 1934 precipitated Pasuruan͛s industrial decline.
Sumenep is sleepy town located on the eastern side of the island of Madura. Sumenep and the surrounding areas are home to a number of traditional arts and crafts – among them the production of Keris (daggers), batik, woodcarving of the Karduluk style, and the Muang Sangkal dances. Sumenep is also known for timeworn villas and historic buildings including the Sumenep Great Mosque and the Palace (Keraton) of Sumenep. The island of Madura may be most famous for its bull races, which are opened with the performance of Saronen, a traditional Madurese music.
The mouth of the Kumai River is shallow and broad, cutting a swath into the lush green shorelines of southern Borneo. Once across the bar at the river’s mouth, the hauntingly beautiful sounds of a call-to-prayer can often-times be heard on approach to the busy port of Kumai itself. Kumai is the access point for one Borneo’s most important national parks: Tanjung Puting. The park protects possibly the largest and most diverse coastal tropical heath and peat swamp forests left in southern Borneo.
This idyllic location, established in 1999 under Swedish management and ownership, is located on one of the 27 tropical islands in the Karimunjawa archipelago. Covered by coconut trees and surrounded by white sandy beaches, Menyawakan Island lies some 64 nautical miles off Java’s coast. This tranquil and secluded setting attracts discerning guests who appreciate the tropical and laid back ambiance.
Semarang is one of the oldest cities in Indonesia, situated on Java's north coast between the shore of the Java Sea and a small ridge of mountains. Ceded to the Dutch West India Company in 1677 by King Amangkurat I in payment of his debts, it became their headquarters and the seat of the Dutch governor of the northeast provinces. Semarang's usefulness as a port waned due to the gradual silting up of the harbor; by the 19th century, Surabaya had eclipsed Semarang as Java's premier port.

Days at sea are the perfect opportunity to relax, unwind and catch up with what you’ve been meaning to do. So whether that is whale watching from the Observatory Lounge, writing home to your loved ones or simply topping up your tan by the pool, these blue sea days are the perfect balance to busy days spent exploring shore side.
In the Sunda Strait of Indonesia lies an area that was witness to one of the most devastating volcanic eruptions in historical times. Anak Krakatoa is a volcano that first emerged from the sea in 1930 and has grown continuously since the 1950s. The active nature of the volcano is the ultimate decider of whether or not a landing can be made on the black sand beaches of the island. Krakatoa’s active fumaroles, lava flows, beautifully colored rocks and the volcano itself are all stunning.
The island of Belitung is large, measuring roughly 4,800 square kilometer (1850 square miles). Along with neighbouring Bangka and the many other surrounding small islands this is not just an archipelago, but a substantial province of Indonesia. Belitung used to have many tin mines, but today the island is better known for its nature. The most distinct features of Belitung’s many beaches are the fascinating granite rock formations along the shallow shores. These rocks can reach the size of houses and lie in bold contrast to the white sand.

The main island of Singapore is shaped like a flattened diamond, 42 km (26 miles) east to west and 23 km (14 miles) north to south. Near the northern peak is the causeway leading to West Malaysia—Kuala Lumpur is less than four hours away by car. It is at the southern foot where you will find most of the city-state’s action, with its gleaming office towers, working docks, and futuristic "supertrees," which are solar-powered and serve as vertical gardens.

Temps forts du Voyage

Join us for a journey from Benoa to Singapore and experience all that Indonesia’s many islands have to offer. Visit an active volcano at Mount Semeru and see Krakatoa, the site of the world’s largest and most destructive eruption ever recorded (in 1883). See orangutans up close at Camp Leakey, learning about Dr. Birute Galdikas’ lifelong work with these endangered creatures. Watch the famous Karapan Sapi bull races, and witness the remnants of volcanic activity, the turquoise Ijen Crater Lake at Mount Merapi. Take a break from the fiery activity and relax by the tranquil Java Sea on Karimunjawa’s white sand beaches. Throughout the voyage, learn about the history, geology, culture, wildlife and botany of this spectacular area from lecture presentations offered by your knowledgeable on board Expedition Team.

Voyage Highlights:

Tanjung Wangi, Indonesia
Tanjung Wangi is an active port located in a volcanically active region of East Java, and the gateway to see Ijen Crater. At the extinct volcano of Mount Merapi is Ijen Crater Lake, a highly acidic crater lake and the largest of its kind in Java. Located at an altitude of 2,883 meters (9,458 feet), the stunning view of the lake’s eerie turquoise color, yellow sulphur deposits and steam is worth the drive and the 90-minute hike to see.

Pasuruan, Indonesia
Located on the northern coast of East Java, Pasuruan is graced with beautiful examples of Islamic architecture, including the Masjid Kota (city mosque). From Pasuruan, access Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park, named for its two mountains (Mount Bromo and Mount Semeru) and the Tenggerese people of this region. Mount Semeru is one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, which has minor eruptions every 20 to 30 minutes! Mount Bromo is known for its beautiful vistas.

Sumenep, Indonesia
Sumenep in the local Madurese language means “quiet valley,” named in the 13th century by the Hindu-Buddhist kingdom of Singhasari. In contrast to this peaceful name, the region is famous for the raucous Karapan Sapi bull racing festival that happens from July through October. Those watching the races can also enjoy Gamelan music concerts and traditional food.

Karimunjawa, Indonesia
Visit the 27-island archipelago of Karimun Java, including Karimunjawa island. Life on this hilly island is quiet, with just one main village that is surrounded by beautiful white sand beaches and simple grass-roofed homes on stilts amidst the tranquil waters of the Java Sea.

Kumai - Camp Leakey, Indonesia
Tanjung Puting is one of the most important national parks of Borneo and Indonesia. It possesses the region’s largest and most diverse examples of coastal tropical forest. Declared a National Park in 1982, it remains largely undeveloped and wild, with orangutan and other primate species roaming freely. Cruise by Zodiac and local boat into Tanjung Puting and take a private tour of Camp Leakey, the landmark primate research station. Meet one of the founding scientists, Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas (as available) and learn of her 45 years devoted to the study, care and preservation of endangered orangutans.

Krakatoa, Indonesia
Visit Krakatoa, a volcanic island famous for its 1883 eruption, one of the most violent volcanic events ever recorded. The eruption destroyed over two-thirds of the island and the surrounding archipelago and collapsed into a caldera, causing tsunamis as far away as South Africa. Today, the cluster of islands, including a new island that formed from 1927 to 1930, Anak Krakatau (Child of Krakatoa), make up a national park. The volcanic cone of Anak Krakatau is still active; depending on conditions, visitors may hike to see the lava flow first-hand.

Cultural Highlights:

• See Madura’s famous Karapan Sapi bull race in Sumenep Indonesia
• Experience classic Indonesian music at a Gamelan
• Taste traditional Indonesian foods

Wildlife Watch List:

• Damselfish, surgeonfish, angelfish, clown fish, wrasses, groupers, butterfly fish, triggerfish
• Silver leaf monkey, long-tailed macaque, Borneo orangutan, proboscis monkey
• Rufous-backed, Ruddy and Stork-billed Kingfisher, Red-crowned and Brown Barbet, White-bellied Woodpecker, Black-and-red Broadbill, Asian Fairy Bluebird, Mangrove Blue Flycatcher, Abbott’s and White-chested Babbler,
