Silversea Luxury Cruises À Cherbourg

Originally a little fishing village, Cherbourg has developed into a historic port designed by Vauban. This was also a strategic naval port during the Napoleonic wars; there is a marina with over 1000 moorings. “Cap de la Hague” is to the West and the “Pointe de Barfleur” to the East. This port, which belongs to Normandy, is a region that has provided inspiration for countless artists and writers, and is the land of apple orchards and rolling farmland dotted with villages of half-timbered houses. Boasting a wealth of abbeys and châteaux, as well as a superb coastline, it offers something for everyone. Cherbourg was also the first stop of RMS Titanic after it left Southampton, England. On 19 June 1864, the naval engagement between USS Kearsarge and CSS Alabama took place off Cherbourg. Excursions depuis Cherbourg

Battles of Normandy : Utah & Omaha Landings

Relive one of the most historic events of World War II during this memorable, full-day excursion to Normandy. Early in the morning on June 6, 1944, about 156,000 Allied soldiers stormed a handful of beaches along the coast of Normandy, France. Although choppy seas and heavy German resistance prevented them from fully meeting their objectives that day, they were able to gain a crucial foothold.

American Cemetery

Depart the pier for the approximate 1.5 hour drive to Omaha Beach. The majority of the nearly 10,000 American soldiers killed at Omaha Beach are buried in this 170-acre (69-hectare) cemetery on land given to the United States by France as a token of her gratitude. Here, 9,386 marble crosses and Stars of David are aligned on a plateau above the beach. A memorial contains the Tablets of the Missing, and a map outlines the battle sites of the Normandy beaches.

La Chenevière

Next, proceed for a two-course lunch accompanied by wine at La Chenevière, an 18th-century chateau located near Omaha Beach, approximately 30 minutes away. The dining room, overlooking the park, has certain grandeur on an intimate scale, while classic cuisine allows you to explore all the distinctive flavours of Normandy, a generous and distinguished cuisine based on delicious local produce.

Arromanches Invasion Museum

Proceed next to the small seaside town of Arromanches via the D-Day landing beaches of Sword, Juno and Gold. Upon arrival, visit the Arromanches Invasion Museum. This important museum was dedicated to the largest landing operation in history on June 6, 1944, when the Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy to attack the German lines.

During your visit, see films and models that re-create the entire operation along the D-Day beaches, and illustrate the logistical importance of Port Winston. A short distance offshore, remnants of the artificial port can still be seen.

Following your visit, commence the approximate 1.5 hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking over uneven ground, some cobblestone streets and some steps. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair, as long as guests can transfer from their chair. The tour sequence may vary. Traffic conditions may affect the duration of this tour.We suggest wearing comfortable, flat walking shoes. Timings for this tour can vary depending on allowances given from the cemeteries based on ceremonies.

Bayeux & its Tapestry

Walk in the footsteps of history when you travel to Bayeux, the first town to be liberated by the Allies at the end of World War II. It survived intact and boasts an impressive array of architecture dating from antiquity to the Renaissance to the modern day. See the famous Bayeux Tapestry as well as the Bayeux Cathedral, which dates from 1077 and was built in both Roman and Gothic styles.

Bayeux Tapestry

Depart the pier for the approximately 1.5-hour drive to Bayeux. Upon arrival you will take a guided visit to the William the Conqueror Centre, the former seminary where the Bayeux Tapestry is displayed. The 225-foot (about 69-metre) Bayeux Tapestry is probably the world's most celebrated piece of needlework; it depicts the dramatic story of the Norman conquest of England on 58 panels and tells the story of William the Conqueror, from the build-up to the invasion of England to the Battle of Hastings in 1066, when William defeated King Harold to become King of England.

After a 20-minute audio-visual film, your visit takes you through different sections of this wonderful Medieval tapestry. The cloth is remarkably well-preserved, and features scenes that depict 11th-century Norman and Saxon dress, food, tools, cooking utensils, and weapons. It remains the most accurate and lively document to survive from the Middle Ages with detailed information from that period.

Lunch will be served in a local restaurant

Notre Dame Cathedral

Following your lunch, walk to the Notre Dame Cathedral, Bayeux's most important historical building. Upon arrival, you may take a guided tour of the cathedral or opt to explore it independently.

At the conclusion of your visit, re-board the coach for the approximately 1.5-hour return drive to the pier in Honfleur.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking for approximately 1.5km (1 mile) and it is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair, able to embark/disembark the coach via steps. Only a part of the visit to the museum is wheelchair-accessible. Although no guided commentary is allowed while viewing the tapestry, audio sets are provided.

Carentan’s Sector

First reach the Normandy Victory Museum, located in Catz on an old American airfield, runway A10. The museum is organized in 17 chronological scenes, offering the visitor a real interactive experience at the heart of the Normandy countryside. Made up of fifteen vintage vehicles, hundreds of mannequins in uniform and several thousand genuine objects, the collections presented are valued by a realistic background depicting the hell of the war.

The hyperrealist dioramas will make you relive on D-Day, and especially the "Battle of the hedgerows", operation Cobra and the counterattack of Mortain - unknown strands of the battle of Normandy. The Normandy Victory Museum also intends to emphasize the role played by women during the conflict, especially within the various auxiliary corps of the American forces.

Then, board your coach for a panoramic tour of the strategical highlights around Carentan. See the "Dead Man's Corner", the cursed drop zone of Angoville-au-Plain,… and learn how the link between the landing beaches of Omaha Beach and Utah Beach was established to form a single front, thanks to the taking of Carentan by the 101st Airborne Division.

Make Your Own Bread

From kneading to shaping into a ball, a flower, or a brioche, the participants in this bread workshop will be truly "hands-on".

The baker of the mill will reveal the secrets of the fermentation of the dough and the heating of a wood-burning oven. To complete the knowledge of the participants on the manufacture of the flour, a time is dedicated to the visit of the water mill.

The mill is quite exceptionnal: a large wheel with a diameter of 3.20m, rebuilt in iroko (African wood); a reach of an exceptional capacity of 500,000 liters of water and a beautiful thatched roof. Inside the mill you will see the whole gear system as well as the two pairs of grinding wheels of the mill, one of which being still used to make flour. Moreover, the permanent exhibition "Intérieur Normand" will immerse you in the everyday life of the past.

The workshop also includes a lunchtime meal consisting of freshly prepared food cooked in the mill's wood-fired oven.

At the end of the workshop, once the bread is cooked and pounded, each new apprentice baker will proudly leave with his own bread!

After your workshop, drive back to Cherbourg.

You will trace the coast past the village of Greville Hague, home of the painter Jean François Millet. Soon you will arrive at Port Racine, said to be the smallest port in France.

Later, Jobourg Point comes into view. Called Nez de Jobourg in French, or "Jobourg Nose," its giant cliffs tower up to 420 feet. You'll see the Romanesque church painted by Millet in Jobourg Village.

At a local restaurant, enjoy a crepe tasting with a hot drink. Return to your ship through the picturesque villages of Vauville and Biville.

Stop in this charming fishing port.

Following a scenic drive, reach the village of Saint Vaast la Hougue. Located on the coast of the Val de Saire, St Vaast is a pleasant harbour.
