Silversea Luxury Cruises A Zhangjiagang

The port city of Zhangjiagang is located near the mouth of the Yangtze River, 60 miles south of Shanghai. Until 1980, Zhangjiagang was just a fishing village with 10,000 inhabitants. In 1993, Zhangjiagang was selected to be a model city for all of China. Residents were instructed by the government about “civilized behavior,” with emphasis on courtesy, mutual respect and obedience to authority. View more

Thanks to vigorous enforcement, the rules are followed to such a degree that visitors remark on the beauty, cleanliness and friendliness of Zhangjiagang compared to other Chinese cities. The current government’s goal is to turn China into a mini-Singapore, and Zhangjiagang proves to be a successful example. Up to 300,000 tourists visit this city every year to experience what could be the future of urban life in China. Zhangjiagang is also the closest port from which to visit the Garden City of Wuxi. The town stands on the edge of Lake Tai, one of the largest freshwater lakes in China, generously sprinkled with islands and surrounded by wooded hills. Here fish are bred, and lotus and water chestnut grown in ideal conditions. The shores are covered with tea plantations and fruit orchards. Wuxi is said to have been founded 3,500 years ago as the capital of the Wu Kingdom, a title it held for over 600 years. In the Han Dynasty the neighboring tin mines were exhausted, and the capital shifted west to Wuhan. It was the construction of the Grand Canal centuries later that gave a lift to local trade and industry. The old city of Wuxi is oval-shaped, and surrounded by a ring of canals. The main branch of the Grand Canal runs outside this ring, but well within the modern city. In the early 20th century, Wuxi became a center for silk production, using modern machinery in some 45 factories. Pier Information The ship is scheduled to dock at the Freight Pier, a distance of 12 miles from the city of Zhangjiagang.Taxis may be available, but drivers do not speak English and fares have to be paid in local currency. Shopping Shopping opportunities can be found in Zhangjiagang city. Best buys include silk and art and craft items. The local currency is the yuan renminbi (RMB). Cuisine If you feel like having lunch ashore, your best bet is Wuxi. The town is especially known for its signature spare ribs cooked in a soy-based sauce and enjoyed by locals and tourists. Other specialties include steamed buns stuffed with crab and a cold dish of crispy eel.
