Silversea Expedition Cruises A Varadero

Varadero is located along Cuba’s narrow Hicacos Peninsula between the Bay of Cardena and the Straits of Florida. While the city is known for being a popular beach resort town because of its miles of some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, there are many other reasons to visit. Varadero offers natural attractions including caves and a chain of small keys, and near the eastern tip of the peninsula lies Hicacos Point Natural Park, a 1.20 square mile ecological preserve. The reserve contains the Cave of Ambrosio, Mangón Lake (which is the home for 31 bird species and 24 reptile species) and the ruins of the La Calavera (The Skull), one of the first salt works to be constructed by the Spanish in the New World. Varadero was first recorded in history in 1555 and was used as a dry dock; the salt mines of the peninsula supplied most of the Spanish Latin America Fleet as early as 1587.
