Silversea Luxury Cruises A Tianjin (Beijing)

Tianjin (Beijing)

Beijing is a vibrant jumble of neighborhoods and districts. It's a city that was transformed almost overnight in preparation for the 2008 Olympics, often leveling lively old hutongs (alleyway neighborhoods) to make way for the glittering towers that are fast dwarfing their surroundings. Still, day-to-day life seems to pulse the lifeblood of a Beijing that once was. Hidden behind Beijing's pressing search for modernity is an intriguing historic core. Many of the city's ancient sites were built under the Mongols during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). View more

A number of the capital's imperial palaces, halls of power, mansions, and temples were rebuilt and refurbished during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Despite the ravages of time and the Cultural Revolution, most sites are in good shape, from the Niujie Mosque, with Koranic verse curled around its arches, to Tiananmen Square, the bold brainchild of Mao Zedong.

The Great Wall of China

A visit to the Great Wall of China presents a fascinating experience. Built along the rolling ridges of steep mountains, it offers spectacular, even awe-inspiring views, and is surely one of humankind's greatest architectural achievements.

Enter through the great gate into the vast complex that has been off limits to the public for over 500 years. Within its walls lies a maze of some 800 palaces built between 1417 and 1420 as the residence of the imperial clan. The 9,000 rooms require a permanent restoration squad that is constantly busy painting and repairing. Feast your eyes on the elaborate architecture, décor and furnishings that make the Palace Museum one of the most visited places in the world. (The huge complex requires an extensive amount of walking.)

Tiananmen Square

Next, proceed to Beijing's most famous square and the country's national symbol. The enormous square is dominated by the gigantic portrait of Chairman Mao. Since imperial days, Tiananmen Square has provided an impressive stage for declarations to the assembled masses. Historical Tianjin

Experience the spectacular beauty, architecture and history of Tianjin during a picturesque, full-day sightseeing excursion to this bustling city.

Tianjin City, Jingyuan Garden and Ancient Culture Street

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 90-minute drive to Tianjin City. Your first stop is at the Jingyuan Garden, or 'Garden of Serenity', the former residence of Puvi, last emperor of the Qing Dynasty. Built in 1921, this lovely garden home has two, two-story Western-style villas as its main buildings. In 2007, a year-long restoration project transformed the residence into a museum about the emperor's life. Next, some free time is made available for a leisurely stroll along Ancient Culture Street. This 600-year-old street is home to a wonderful blend of architectural styles. Along the way, marvel at its classic cultural features, perhaps purchase various folk crafts and sample the delicious local Tianjin snacks.

Lunch and Yangliuqing New Year Painting Museum

After a Chinese lunch at a local restaurant, proceed for a guided tour of the Yangliuqing New Year Painting Museum. The famous, 17th-century knives, wood plates and woodcarving paintings displayed here reflected the local citizenry's hopes for a better life amidst a turbulent society. The early paintings gradually formed their own characters with an auspicious festive tone, and today, locals decorate their homes with Yangliuqing New Year paintings ahead of the Chinese Lunar New Year. During your visit, marvel at the beautiful artwork and observe a local artisan make the painting using wood plates.

Five Avenue Area and Former Mansion of Prince Qing

Next, re-board your coach for a drive through the Five Avenue Area. A Tianjin icon and showcase of modern Chinese history, this historical area features more than 2,000 garden buildings constructed in various architectural styles during the 1920s and 1930s. Your final stop is at the Former Mansion of Prince Qing. Renowned for its exquisite blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles, the main building of the mansion still maintains its original appearance. Following your guided tour, relax with a Chinese afternoon tea served with snacks at the mansion's bistro. Time permitting, visit the Prince Qing Mansion History Exhibition, then re-board your coach and commence the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately one mile (1.6 kilometres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, 20 steps at the Jingyuan Garden and steps at the sights visited. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended.

Beijing on your own

Explore the splendid sights of Beijing at your leisure during this full-day, self-guided sightseeing excursion.

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately three-hour transfer to downtown Beijing. After being dropped off at the Wangfujing area, begin your self-guided tour of this bustling capital city. The political hub of China, Beijing is renowned for its opulent historic palaces, temples, huge stone walls and gates. The city's artistic treasures and universities have also made it a centre of Chinese culture and art.

During your visit, you can also discover the modern splendour of New Beijing. Economic reforms and preparation for the Olympic Games have accelerated the pace and scale of change, and outfitted the city with a contemporary flair. Present-day Beijing offers an endless selection of theatres, discos, bars, business centres, restaurants, and shopping malls. At the conclusion of your visit, return to the meeting point, re-board your coach and commence the approximately three-hour transfer back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. Walking in Beijing is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended.

Highlights of Tianjin

Experience the major points of interests in Tianjin, including Ancient Culture Street, Tianjin Museum and Shi Family Mansion, on this full-day outing to the city.

Tianjin

Departing the port, a 75-minute drive takes you into Tianjin city. Home to nearly six million people, Tianjin boasts an interesting history as a foreign concession. Since the mid-20th century, Tianjin has been a centre of major industrialization and production of a wide range of consumer goods known for their excellent quality.

Upon arrival in Tianjin, a sightseeing drive through the city centre highlights the major points of interest. Its European architecture from the turn of the 20th century gives the impression of an outdoor museum, while new, high-rise buildings of glass and steel puncture the city's skyline.

Next, visit the Ancient Culture Street, an interesting and historically accurate street depicting life in 19th-century Tianjin. Note the splendidly replicated classical architecture in the folk style of the Qing Dynasty. Afterwards, lunch of Chinese cuisine is served at a local hotel restaurant before continuing to the Tianjin Museum. Newly renovated, this state-of-the-art museum not only tells the history of the city of Tianjin, but also has a large collection of arts and crafts treasures.

Shi Family Mansion

Re-board the coach for a drive to the Shi Family Mansion. Built in 1875 and occupying over 19,000 square feet (1,765 sq. metres), this mansion boasts 12 courtyards, each originally with specific functions and now the site for a Folklore Museum. Its brick, wood and stone carvings are among the best in north China.

Finally, the 75-minute drive takes you back to the pier and the ship.

Please note: This tour not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Wear casual clothing and comfortable walking shores. The driving distance between the pier and Tianjin is approximately 1.25 hours. Space is limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Following lunch, head to famous Tiananmen Square. Meaning 'Gate of Heavenly Peace,' the square is overwhelming by its sheer size. Since imperial times, Beijing's national symbol has always provided an impressive stage for declarations and key events in Chinese history. In modern times, the solemn flag-raising ceremony has become a revered daily celebration under the watchful eyes of the gigantic portrait of Chairman Mao. It was from the giant gate that the People's Republic was declared on October 1, 1949.

Next, proceed to the Forbidden City for an extensive walking tour. Off-limits to the public for 500 years, the vast complex was opened in 1949 as the Palace Museum. Within its walls lies a maze of palaces built between 1417 and 1420 as the residence of China's emperors. With some 800 buildings and 9,000 rooms, maintenance and restoration are an on-going process.

Leaving the Forbidden City, drive to the China World Hotel for check-in. Overnight accommodation at the China World Hotel (or similar) - Beijing.

DAY TWO -The Great Wall/Beijing

After breakfast, depart the hotel and take a drive out of the city for a visit of the Great Wall of China.

After about two hours, arrive at the Badaling section of what has justifiably been declared one of the 'New Seven Wonders of the World'. With portions dating back nearly 2,000 years and an overall length of some 3,000 miles (4,828 kilometres), this spectacular structure remains a testament to the strength and perseverance of the Chinese people. At first sight, visitors are struck by its breathtakingly scenic location, with forests covering much of the area. The roundtrip cable car service (weather permitting) provides a leisurely and less strenuous way to take in the stunning scenery and the beauty of the Great Wall of China.

Leaving the Badaling area, proceed next to a local restaurant for lunch.

Afterwards head back to Beijing. A stop at the Olympic Park on the way enables you to have a view of the 'Bird Nest' and 'Water Cube', Beijing's intriguing landmark structures erected for the 2008 Olympics.

Discover vestiges of Old Beijing away from the bustling city during a pedi-cab trip through narrow alleyways of the Hutong, where only the awning-covered vehicles and bicycles can manoeuvre. Some of these neighbourhoods date back to the Qing dynasty and residents still maintain a traditional lifestyle within walled courtyards. Step inside a family home and get a look behind the scenes. At the end of your Hutong tour, re-join your coach and return to the hotel. The remainder of the afternoon is at your leisure and dinner is on your own this evening.

Overnight at the China World Hotel (or similar) - Beijing.

DAY THREE - Beijing/Xian

After breakfast and check out, depart the hotel and transfer to Summer Palace. Summer Palace is 12 kilometers northwest of the downtown. It is the largest imperial garden in the world and a veritable museum of classical Chinese garden architecture. The initial construction of the Summer Palace began in 1750, commissioned by Emperor Qinglong as a gift for his mother's birthday. The construction took 15 years to complete. It had the name "Qingyi Yuan" (Garden of Clear Ripples) at that time. The plundering of foreign troops in 1860 destroyed most of the buildings. But in 1888 Empress Dowager Cixi embezzled the funds of the Imperial Navy to renovate the garden.

After Chinese style lunch at a local restaurant, tranfer to Beijing's Capital Airport, where an afternoon flight takes you to Xian, home to the famed Terra Cotta Warriors.

Upon arrival at Xian Airport, you are met and transferred via coach to the downtown Xian and visit to one of the city's landmark - the Ancient City Wall. The City Wall's sheer mass, 39 feet (12 meters) high and nearly 9 miles (14 kilometres) long, may explain why the wall is considered the most complete fortified structure still standing. Continue to check in at deluxe Hilton Hotel. In the evening, enjoy buffet dinner at hotel.

Overnight at the Hilton Hotel (or similar) - Xian.

DAY FOUR -Terra Cotta Warriors/Shanghai

After breakfast and check out, drive to Xian's most famous attraction. Housing one of China's supreme treasures, an army of a life-sized funeral honour guard, the Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses are the most significant archaeological excavations of the 20th century. These life size figures arranged in battle formations are modelled on what the imperial guard looked like in those days of pomp and vigour. They were all but forgotten and only rediscovered in 1974. Excavations are still on-going, with additional pottery soldiers, horses, chariots and even weapons having been unearthed after the initial discovery. Most of them have been restored to their former grandeur. To protect this valuable find, an onsite museum was built, which has become a must-see on any China itinerary.

Enjoy an exclusive visit, reserved for VIP guests and accompanied by an expert from the museum, to provide you with the best look at this incredible 'army' from a lower platform.

After lunch at local restaurant, proceed to the downtown area where your guide will introduce you to the city's major attractions, including the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and the Great Mosque.

Start your afternoon tour with a visit to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. This 1,300-year-old structure from the golden days of the Tang Dynasty has long been the hallmark of Xian. The pagoda, along with the Drum Tower and Bell Tower are part of the Buddhist Temple of Grace complex located in the centre of Xian. At the Great Mosque, you can admire the pagoda-style architecture of this beautiful building which dates from the Tang Dynasty.

From here, return to Hilton Hotel to freshen up before departing for dumpling dinner and the cultural Tang Dynasty Show. This wonderful performance and classical entertainment depicts a variety of historical relics, providing insight and keeping alive the splendid culture of the ancient Tang Dynasty.

Overnight accommodation at the Hilton Hotel - Xian.

DAY FIVE - Xian/Shanghai

After breakfast and check out, transfer to the Xian Airport for two-hour flight to Shanghai. Upon arrival in Sahnghai, transfer to local restaurant for Chinese style lunch. Next, you will pay a visit to Jade Buddha Temple, founded in 1881. Its rare statues of Buddha, each carved from a single piece of white Burmese jade, are of special interest. Depending on the schedule of resident monks, you may be able to peek inside one of the temples to witness a prayer session.

Continuing on, discover Shanghai's Old Town and wander among its maze of narrow alleys and cobblestone lanes. As locals bustle about their daily activities, experience one of China's most famous dumpling cookeries and admire the area's remarkable architecture. From here, proceed to the 16th-century Yu Yuan Garden. This cultivated oasis captures the essence of the landscape art and architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties. It has also served as the inspiration for the famous willow-pattern chinaware. High walls adorned with huge, stone dragons shelter teahouses, pavilions, rockeries and carp ponds. Make your way back to the coach by way of a small lake, which is spanned by a picturesque zigzag bridge

From here transfer to pier where the ship welcomes you back.

The Great Wall has been designated as one of the 'New Seven Wonders of the World'. Enjoy a thrilling roundtrip cable car ride up to the wall with great views all around (weather permitting) and visit the Sacred Way of the Ming Tombs prior to taking a break for lunch. Your two-day trip to fascinating Beijing and the famous Great Wall of China concludes with the coach drive back to Tianjin and the ship.

DAY ONE - Tianjin / Beijing

Upon disembarking the ship at Tianjin International Cruise Home Port, transfer to the Tianjin train station and commence your overnight excursion to Beijing with a 30-minute ride on the high-speed train. Upon arrival in the capital of the People's Republic of China, transfer to a five-star hotel for a buffet lunch.

After lunch, proceed to Beijing's national symbol, Tiananmen Square. Known as 'Gate of Heavenly Peace', the square is dominated by a gigantic portrait of Chairman Mao. Since imperial times, Tiananmen Square has always provided an impressive stage for declarations and key events in local history. In modern times, the solemn flag-raising ceremony has become a revered daily celebration. It was from the giant gate that Chairman Mao proclaimed the People's Republic on October 1, 1949.

Your next stop is a walking visit of the legendary Forbidden City. Off-limits to the public for 500 years, the vast complex of this World Heritage Site was opened in 1949 as the Palace Museum. Within its walls lies a maze of palaces built between 1417 and 1420 as the residence of China's emperors. With some 800 buildings and 9,000 rooms, maintenance and restoration are an on-going process.

Leaving the Forbidden City, drive to the Four Seasons Hotel Beijing for check-in. The hotel features luxury accommodations as well as fine dining venues. There is time to relax and freshen up before dining at one of the hotel's three restaurants of your choice: Set menu dinner at Cai Yi Xuan (Chinese), Opus (Western), or Mio (Western).

DAY TWO - Beijing / Great Wall / Sacred Way of Ming Tombs / Tianjin

After breakfast and check-out, begin today's sightseeing program traveling out of the city and toward the Great Wall. En route, pass the Olympic Park for a view of the 'Bird's Nest' and 'Water Cube', the new ingenious landmark structures built for the 2008 Olympics.

Then, after a drive of about two hours, arrive at the Great Wall. With portions dating back nearly 2,000 years and an overall length of some 3,000 miles (4,828 kilometres), this spectacular structure remains a testament to the strength and perseverance of the Chinese people, justly deserving to be named as one the New Seven Wonders of the World. The roundtrip cable car ride (weather permitting) provides a leisurely and less strenuous way to take in the stunning scenery and the beauty of the Great Wall of China.

Leaving the wall, proceed to the Sacred Way of the Ming Tombs. Built between 1409 AD and 1644 AD, they are the burial place of several Ming emperors, their wives and concubines. The Sacred Way is flanked by 18 pairs of giant statues and leads to the most prominent tomb of Ming Emperor Yongle.

From here, proceed to a local restaurant for a Chinese-style lunch followed by the 3.5-hour coach journey to Tianjin, where the ship welcomes you back.
