Silversea Luxury Cruises A Sydney, Nova Scotia

Sydney, Nova Scotia

If you come directly to Cape Breton via plane, ferry, or cruise ship, Sydney is where you’ll land. If you’re seeking anything resembling an urban experience, it’s also where you’ll want to stay: after all, this is the island’s sole city. Admittedly, it is not the booming center it was a century ago when the continent’s largest steel plant was located here (that era is evoked in Fall on Your Knees, an Oprah Book Club pick penned by Cape Bretoner Anne-Marie MacDonald). However, Sydney has a revitalized waterfront and smattering of Loyalist-era buildings that appeal to visitors. Moreover, it offers convenient access to popular attractions in the region—like the Miner’s Museum in nearby Glace Bay (named for the glace, or ice, that filled its harbor in winter), the Fortress at Louisbourg, and beautiful Bras d'Or Lake.

Discover the Cabot Trail deemed one of the most scenic drives in North America, on this full day excursion. We will take you from the Atlantic shoreline and into the Cape Breton's Highland National Park.

Your tour begins with an approximate one-hour scenic drive from the port of Sydney to the fishing village of Ingonish which reveals the picturesque vistas that inspired Alexander Graham Bell to say, "I have travelled around the globe. I have seen the Canadian and American Rockies, the Andes and the Alps, and the Highlands of Scotland but for simple beauty, Cape Breton outrivals them all."

Drive over Kelly's Mountain and the Cape Smokey Mountains toward the national park, pausing for a break at the Gaelic College. Visit Bell's favorite beach and view the great granite cliffs of Middle Head Peninsula, home of Nova Scotia's premier hotel, the Keltic Lodge.

Enjoy a buffet lunch at a local restaurant before re-boarding your vehicle for the approximate 2 hour dive back to the pier.

Approximate walking times are; 15 min at St. Anne's Look-off, 30 min Fishing Wharf, photo stop on the way back to pier. Spirit of the Fiddle - The Sounds of Cape Breton

Cape Breton is world renown for reviving, preserving, and promoting Celtic music and is considered the international centre of this lively and celebratory style of music, dancing and storytelling. To see and hear this unique music, look no further than the Marine Terminal's landmark giant fiddle across from the ship.

Complete with bow and strings, the fiddle was forged out of solid steel, weighs 10 tons and measures 54 feet high and over 14 feet wide. Guests will meet at the giant fiddle and proceed inside the Pavilion, past the many unique shops and restaurants and be piped into the Kavanaugh Room for a personal performance.

The program includes a fiddler, a singer and a Celtic dancer. Refreshments including traditional Cape Breton oatcakes will be available. After the performance guests are free to return to the ship or browse the many shops in the Terminal.

Depart the pier for the approximately one hour drive to the Nova Scotia Highland Village Museum, an open-air museum situated on a stunning 43-acre property overlooking the Bras d'Or Lakes. Established in 1959, the educational and representational Highland Village brings together historic and replica structures, carefully curated collections and artifacts, entertaining activities and tales, and costumed animators passionate about sharing local culture, to compellingly tell the story of Gaelic settlement in Nova Scotia.
