Silversea Luxury Cruises A Sharm el Sheik

Sharm el Sheik

The port and town of Sharm-el-Sheikh lies near the southernmost tip of the Sinai Peninsula where the Straits of Tiran meet the Gulf of Aqaba. With its strategic position, the Sinai posed a desirable target for various rulers over the centuries. In recent times, the last battle for the Sinai was fought between Egypt and Israel from 1967 to 1979, ending with a peace treaty signed in Washington, D.C. View more

Since the withdrawal of the Israelis, more and more Egyptians have settled in the Sinai, taking advantage of the booming tourist trade. However, vast interior regions are still sparsely populated. Many Bedouins have been affected by the advent of the 21st century, which is rapidly changing their age-old customs and nomadic lifestyle. As tourism and hotel projects continue to spring up along the Sinai coast, contact with Bedouins not involved in tourism is becoming increasingly rare. Once their nomadic life kept them on the move with their tents; today many Bedouins cultivate grain, vegetables and dates in addition to catering to the tourists. Sharm-el-Sheikh was initially developed by the Israelis during the Sinai occupation. Na'ama Bay, a short drive from the port, has grown from virtually nothing into a sizeable resort since the early 1980s. Between the two towns, a string of hotels line a once-untouched coastline. Resort hotels offer great opportunities for swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving. Glass bottom boat trips are available for those preferring to view the exotic marine life of the Red Sea without getting their feet wet.

St. Catherine's Monastery

Following an early departure, your excursion begins with a 135-mile (216-kilometre) journey inland through rugged desert toward the foothills of Mount Sinai, site of St. Catherine's Monastery. This Greek Orthodox holy place is the oldest Christian monastery in the world, with ties going back to the prophet Moses and the exodus of the Jews from Egypt.

St. Catherine's Monastery

The monastic order was founded in the 4th century AD by the Byzantine empress Helena, who had a small chapel built next to what is believed to be the Burning Bush from which God spoke to Moses. The chapel is dedicated to St. Catherine, the legendary martyr of Alexandria. According to legend, her body was transported by angels to an area just south of Mount Sinai, where it was found some 300 years later by monks from the monastery. In the 6th century, Emperor Justinian ordered the building of a fortress, including a basilica and a monastery to serve as a refuge for the monks of St. Catherine's.

Today, the monastery is still in use and inhabited by Greek Orthodox monks. Despite its remote location, the monastery attracts a great number of visitors and pilgrims. Its attractive scenic location is in itself a highlight. Until a road was built, the only way to enter the monastery was by being hauled up the steep walls in a basket. The guided tour of the monastic complex includes viewing what is believed to be Moses' Burning Bush and visits to the chapel to admire a collection of icons and jeweled crosses, as well as to the Library Museum which contains an impressive collection of precious icons and manuscripts.

Leaving the monastery, re-join the coach and commence the return journey to Sharm-el-Sheikh.

Please note: This tour involves a 3-hour drive each way to reach St. Catherine's Monastery. It requires a moderate amount of walking for approximately 1640 yards (1500 meters) over paved and unpaved surfaces with an incline ramp, some cobblestones inside the monastery and various steps throughout. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility however not for those who utilize a wheelchair. Staff inside the Monastery will encourage guests to move quickly. Visits to Sakkara and Giza will acquaint you with the fascinating history of Egypt's ancient rulers and the incredible monuments they left for generations afterwards to admire. Learn about the city's Islamic and early Christian history during visits to the Citadel and Old Cairo. Then feast your eyes on the splendid relics of antiquities during your visit to the famed Egyptian Museum. At the end of your visit, a short drive will take you to the Four Seasons Nile Plaza for check-in and dinner.

DAY ONE - Sharm El Sheikh / Cairo

Very early this morning, depart the pier to Sharm El Sheikh Airport for a one hour flight to Cairo. Once you arrive at Cairo airport, you will board the coach and start the day with a visit to Sakkara. The Step Pyramid of Sakkara dates from 2700 BC, and is the oldest stone structure in the world. It was designed for King Djoser. In addition, there are 16 more pyramids on the site in various states of perservation. Because the necropolis was lost beneath the sands for much of the past two millenia, many of the tombs have been superbly preserved with both their structures and lavish internal decorations intact.

Lunch will be served in one of the local deluxe hotels before continuing on to Giza.

The colossal Great Pyramids are considered the most famous of Egypt's attractions and the only monuments left of the ancient wonders. The three main Pyramids at Giza were built as tombs by Cheops, his son Chephren, and Chephren's son Mykiernus to preserve each of the pharaohs' mummified body for eternity. For centuries, these unique structures have intrigued the world while surviving the rise and fall of great dynasties.

A short drive takes you to the top of the plateau for a panoramic view across the desert and the pyramids. A string of camels usually provide great photo opportunities for a nomimial fee. Southeast of the great pyramid stands the sphinx carved out of solid rock around 2650 BC. Steeped in legend and superstition, the sphinx was a monument either to the sun god Ra or to Pharaoh Chephren. It has the head of a man and the body of a lion. The monument faces east, probably to greet the rising sun and the return of life each day.

A quick stop for souvenir shopping is made on the way back in to Cairo and your hotel. Check-in and enjoy some leisure time before dinner is served.

Overnight at the Four Seasons Nile Plaza - Cairo

DAY TWO - Cairo / Port Said

After an early breakfast, check-out and begin with an introduction to the metropolis of Cairo. Start your tour with a visit of the Citadel & Mohamed Ali mosque. The Citadel was fortified by the Ayyubid ruler Salah al-Din (Saladin) between 1176 and 1183 CE, to protect it from the Crusaders. Only a few years after defeating the Fatimid Caliphate, Saladin set out to build a wall that would surround both Cairo and Fustat.

The Mosque of Muhammad Ali is the most popular Islamic mosque among tourists. This mosque is also sometimes referred to as the Alabaster Mosque due to its extensive use of that stone on some of the exterior walls and other surfaces. Sometimes it is popularly known as al-qal'a, meaning citadel, and thus confused with the fortress in which it is located.

The first of three final stops in Old Cairo features the so-called Hanging Church, which refers to the fact that it's built on the ruins of two old towers of the Fortress of Babylon. The original structure dates back to the end of the 3rd-century / beginning of the 4th-century, though some historians believe that it was a Roman Temple converted to a Roman Church and finally to a Coptic Church.

Nearby, the Ben Ezra Synagogue is another religious structure with a storied past. It was originally a Christian church that the Copts had to sell, to the Jews, in 882A.D in order to pay the annual taxes imposed by the Muslim rulers of the time, and therefore Abraham Ben Ezra, who came from Jerusalem during the reign of Ahmed Ibn Tulun, bought the church for the sum of 20,000 dinars.

Lastly, if you ask any local citizen or savvy tourist visiting Egypt about the most famous and the largest bazaar in Egypt, the answer would be the same; it is the Khan El Khalili Market. Although it appears at first as if it only serves the needs of the tourists who are looking gifts and souvenirs to take with them back home. However, if time allows, you might consider exploring deeper inside the lanes and narrow streets of the bazaar where you will find small workshops with artisans producing wonderful jewelry, glass, copper, and brassware.

End your visit of Old Cairo with a buffet lunch served in one of the nearby deluxe hotels. From here, continue on to the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities.

The museum was established by the Egyptian government in 1835. The present building was built in 1900, in the neo classical style by the French architect Marcel Dourgnon. The collections now exceed 12,000 objects ranging from pre historic era to the Greco Roman period.

The museum consist of two floors. The ground floor follows the history of ancient Egypt, and the second floor consists of thousands of smaller items from the span of Egyptian history. Most significant, of course, are the rooms that display the treasure of Tutankhamun the boy-king who ruled Egypt for nine years. Beyond his famous treasures, and his god-like golden mask, Tutankhamun appears as a shadowy figure in Egyptian history. The pharaoh is indeed gone, but the mightiness of his treasures still fascinates us to this very day. Next, you will also be visiting the Mummies room where you can come 'face to face' with some of the great rulers of ancient Egypt.

At the end of your visit, rejoin your coach and conclude your journey into Egypt's fascinating past with an approximate 3-hour drive to Port Said. Upon arrival, proceed to the pier and rejoin the ship.

Please note: This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure requires an extensive amount of walking (approximately 4.5 km / 3 miles).
