SEWARD (Anchorage, Alaska)

It is hard to believe that a place as beautiful as Seward exists. Surrounded on all sides by Kenai Fjords National Park, Chugach National Forest, and Resurrection Bay, Seward offers all the quaint realities of a small railroad town with the bonus of jaw-dropping scenery. This little town of about 2,750 citizens was founded in 1903, when survey crews arrived at the ice-free port and began planning a railroad to the Interior. Since its inception, Seward has relied heavily on tourism and commercial fishing. View more

It is also the launching point for excursions into Kenai Fjords National Park, where it is quite common to see marine life and calving glaciers.

Excursions depuis SEWARD (Anchorage, Alaska)

Anchorage Tour & Airport Transfer

Continue your homeward bound journey on this afternoon airport/city transfer, with a visit to the Alaska Native Heritage Centre. A panoramic, narrated drive through Anchorage and lunch at one of the city's popular brewpubs completes your tour. Suitable only for guests with flights after 8:00 p.m. or those staying overnight in town, this tour offers a convenient way to see the area sights of Alaska' largest city.

Anchorage City Tour

Board the coach from the debarkation centre for a more in-depth look at one of Alaska's best-known cities. Trace the city's rise from a railroad tent city through the incredible 1964 earthquake as your driver/guide regales you with local lore. With relatively modest and recent beginnings as a tent camp for the people working on the Alaska Railroad in 1915, Anchorage is now a thriving cultural and commercial hub with 40% of the state's residents calling it home. Savour the majesty of the city's surroundings, highlighted by the backdrop of three of Alaska's thirty-nine mountain ranges. On a clear day, Mt. Denali, 130 miles (200 kilometres) to the north, can be viewed from downtown. Stop at Earthquake Park and the world's largest floatplane base - Lake Hood and Lake Spenard, before continuing to the Alaska Native Heritage Centre.

Alaska Native Heritage Centre

The Alaska Native Heritage Centre is a premier cultural centre sharing the rich heritage of Alaska's 11 major cultural groups. Experience Alaska Native culture first-hand through engaging storytelling, authentic Native song and dance, artist demonstrations, and Native games demonstrations, as you independently explore the exhibits and surrounds. The theatre hosts an introductory film that illustrates the many different cultures of Alaska Native people as well as its beautiful landscape and climates, all highlighted from each of the regions in Alaska. Your two-hour visit gives you the opportunity to view, if you wish, the six authentic life-sized Native dwellings situated in a wooded area around beautiful Lake Tiulana, along with artefacts that each group used in their daily lives. Make sure to see the whale bones at the Inupiaq site; a favourite spot for picture-taking and meet with the culture representatives in each village exhibit.

Your tour concludes at the Egan Convention Center, where a hospitality room and airport shuttle connections are available to assist you as your stay in Alaska ends.

Please note: This tour and airport transfer is only available to guests with flights after 8:00 p.m. or those remaining in the city. Little walking is required; however, guests must be able to embark/disembark the coach via steps. To view all the exhibits, a walk across a gravel surface that may impede wheelchair users is required; this tour is suitable for those with limited mobility. Guests' luggage is transferred separately; we recommend you carry all valuables, including medications and travel documents with you. Alcoholic drinks at lunch are on guests' own account and are only served to those 21 years of age and older. The Group Hospitality Suite at the Egan Convention Center allows guests to leave carry-on luggage safely so they may explore the city after the tour. A minimum number of participants are required to operate this programme.

Seward SeaLife Center & Kenai Fjords National Park (For In-Transit Guests Only)

Enjoy a visit to the Alaska SeaLife Centre in downtown Seward to see marine animals such as harbour seals, king crabs, puffin, octopus and others while peeking over the shoulders of ocean scientists studying Alaska's rich seas and diverse sea life.

The Alaska SeaLife Centre generates and shares scientific knowledge to promote understanding and stewardship of Alaska's marine ecosystems. Centre-based research projects help scientists discover reasons for declining marine animal populations and environmental changes and it provides care for sick and injured marine animals, yielding important information about wildlife populations. The many exhibits at the Alaska SeaLife Centre immerse visitors in Alaskan marine ecosystems and provide opportunities to watch animals in naturalistic habitats as well as research settings.

Next, depart the SeaLife centre for the short drive to the small boat harbour where you will board the Glacier Express out to Kenai Fjords National Park. Once here watch for whales, otters, and sea lions and stop at the mighty Holgate Glacier to float among the icebergs and watch for calving, where giant chunks of glacial ice break off and crash into the ocean.

At the conclusion of the tour, you will be transferred back to the pier for embarkation.

Please Note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking of approximately 656 feet (20 metres) at the SeaLife centre. It is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair. Dress warmly in layers with closed toed shoes and bring protective outerwear, a hat, gloves and binoculars.

Debark and bid farewell to the Silver ship as you board our exclusive train heading north. A quick stop in the town of Girdwood will allow you to disembark the train. Transfer from the station to the Hotel Alyeska. Following check-in, the balance of the day (including all meals) is at your leisure. Included in your stay is a ticket to ride the Aerial Tram to the top of Mt. Alyeska for a superb panoramic view of the valley.

DAY 2 - GIRDWOOD / DENALI

After breakfast at the hotel, board the waiting transportation to depart on a full-day scenic motor coach trip to Denali. A boxed lunch will be provided. Stop en-route at Martin Buser's home for an exclusive visit, where the four-time Iditarod Champion will regale you with tales of the Last Great Race and the wonderful champion dogs he raises and trains for mushing. Martin became fascinated with sled dogs while still a teen. He came to Alaska in 1979 to enhance his knowledge of care and training of sled dogs. He began working and training with long-time Alaskan mushers Earl and Natalie Norris and ran his first Iditarod in 1980.

Arriving in Denali in the mid to late afternoon, check-in to your hotel. Enjoy a reception with a mountain climber speaker. Afterwards you may wish to take advantage of the extended sunlight and enjoy an evening stroll through town. Dinner tonight is on your own.

Overnight at the Grand Denali Lodge (or similar) at Denali National Park

DAY 3 - DENALI

The highest point of the drive -literally and figuratively- is at Polychrome Pass. There, the Plains of Murie extend to the Alaska Range on the horizon. Just a bit further on is the Toklat River and Toklat Bridge. At Mile 62 you'll have a superb photo opportunity of Mount Denali - assuming the weather cooperates.

DAY 4 - DENALI / ANCHORAGE

Late morning, transfer to the rail depot and board the Alaska Railroad (Deluxe Dome Railcar Service) for the scenic ride to Talkeetna. During your thrilling ride through the thick forests and along the edges of steep valleys, you may catch a glimpse of native wildlife from the comfort of your glass-domed rail car. Along the way cross Hurricane Gulch, perched more than 300 feet (91 metres) above the river below

The highlight of today will be passing 300+ feet over Hurricane Gulch. Seating is under windows that extend 180 degrees around you, so you'll be able to thrill at the majesty of this and other sites along the way. There is even an open-air platform if you'd like to step outside and stretch your legs a bit.

Lunch will be served in the dining salon at mid-day. You will be amazed at the variety of items the chefs can prepare - from delicious hot and cold Alaskan specialties to authentic reindeer chili!

At Talkeetna disembark the train and take this opportunity to stretch your legs a bit. Board a motorcoach for the last leg of your journey to Anchorage and the Captain Cook Hotel. Dinner this evening is on your own.

DAY 5 - ANCHORAGE / HOMEWARD

Your Silversea representative will arrange your transfer to Anchorage airport for your homeward flight.

INQUIRE ABOUT UPGRADING TO THE DENALI BY AIR PROGRAM:

More glaciers than one can count, most over 20 miles in length, towering granite walls, snow and ice covered peaks for as far as the eye can see are just a few of the attractions you will see on a typical flight.

Please note, this upgrade option is only available for reservations made more than 90 days prior to cruise departure.

Descending, the mountains begin to hover over you as you touch down on a two-mile-long finger-shaped lake.

Winter Lake enjoys an ideal setting, tucked away far from civilization amid 15 acres of wilderness. For many, tiny Winter Lake Lodge is the quintessential Alaskan wilderness lodge. Winter Lake is for those who truly appreciate a stay in the middle of nowhere, surrounded only by Alaska's glorious nature. Your hosts, Carl and Kirsten Dixon, have created a rustic yet upscale approach to the wilderness lodge. They're true Alaskans who have homeschooled their children and created this family-run business - and their love of nature, food, and people comes through clearly.

As you check-in you are greeted by a carefully trained staff, and the extremely personal service continues throughout your stay. The Dixons have an ability to recruit some of Alaska's best staffers, each of whom have their own specialty to share, whether it's about flowers, photography, or how to cast a fly-rod. An added highlight of your stay is a short included helicopter flight seeing excursion that can be booked upon arrival.

The personal attention comes in an especially intimate atmosphere. Winter Lake Lodge boasts just four units - huge, hand-crafted log cabins that feature handmade furniture and thick carpets. Relax inside, or sit outside and soak in the fields of rare chocolate lilies against the alpine view of Trimble Glacier and the shimmering lake. Lunch is served at the Lodge and an Alaskan themed dinner is included at the Lodge tonight.

Today, following a hearty breakfast this morning, the day is yours to enjoy. Activities abound, so you'll never get bored. Learn about the area's rich history as you hike the nearby trails (including the famous Iditarod Sled Dog Trail) past beaver dams, wildflower meadows, and meandering streams, up to sweeping views of the valley. Join the kitchen staff for an impromptu wine tasting. Take a yoga class. Explore the grounds on a mountain bike, and cut across the glass-like lake with a kayak or canoe.

The food is another reason people come - and come back. Kirsten is a celebrity chef in her own right; she was trained at the Cordon Bleu, has published two cookbooks, and regularly hosts TV cooking shows. Her innovative menus, that she manages to put together with ingredients from her own garden, are better than most 4-star restaurants.

Every day, when your activities are done, you return to the main lodge. The Lodge flies in rare cheeses and complements them with matching wines, making for the perfect pre-dinner get-together. Then sit down to a gourmet meal, which takes cooking to an art form. You may even find the berries you picked this morning turned into a pie for dessert!

Lunch and a gourmet dinner are included at the Lodge.

2NT POST-CRUISE: WINTER LAKE LODGE RETREAT

Experience the glory of the Alaskan Wilderness at one of Alaska's premier wilderness lodges. Extremely remote, yet comfortably luxurious, Winter Lake Lodge overlooks a shimmering lake where you'll arrive by floatplane for wildlife viewing, sport fishing and other outdoor adventures. Other options include helicopter glacier trekking into the Alaska Range or take a cooking class in the kitchen of award-winning chef Kirsten Dixon. Enjoy kayaking, canoeing and perhaps the finest cuisine this side of the Iditarod Trail.

Please note: Guests should schedule their homeward flights out of Anchorage.

Note: Guests who require a visa for entry into the United States must obtain it prior to travel.

IMPORTANT: TO INSURE PROPER WEIGHT AND BALANCE ON YOUR FLIGHTSEEING PLANE, GUESTS MUST PROVIDE THEIR ACCURATE WEIGHT NO LESS THAN 60 DAYS PRIOR TO CRUISE DEPARTURE.

DAY 1 - SEWARD / ANCHORAGE / WINTER LAKE

Upon disembarking in Seward, you will be transfered to Anchorage. Once there, proceed to the float plane base at Lake Hood, home to the largest float plane base in the world. Board your floatplane for a scenic and exhilarating flight-seeing tour of the Alaskan wilderness en route to the Winter Lake Lodge.

Considered one of the premier lodges in Alaska and home to renowned chef Kirsten Dixon, the Winter Lake Lodge is nestled amidst 15 acres overlooking Winter Lake, a finger-shaped, two-mile waterway that offers seclusion and spectacular scenery along the western edge of the Alaska Range. For a few exciting days each winter, it serves as a checkpoint along the Iditarod Trail. Views of the Trimble Glacier and the beginnings of the Rainy Pass are visible from the lake behind the lodge, and Wolverine Mountain offers intriguing hiking and wildlife viewing.

Your stay at the Lodge also includes a short helicopter flightseeing excursion to be scheduled upon your arrival.

An Alaskan themed dinner is included at the Lodge tonight.

Denali Park is the Crown Jewel of the North with unparalleled beauty and grandeur. Views from the train or bus can be awe inspiring but these sights only scratch the surface of what one can see from the air.

More glaciers than one can count, most over 20 miles in length, towering granite walls, snow and ice covered peaks for as far as the eye can see are just a few of the attractions you will see on a typical flight.

Please note, this upgrade option is only available for reservations made more than 90 days prior to cruise departure.
