Silversea Luxury Cruises A Santa Marta

Santa Marta

Santa Marta lies at the foot of the snowcapped Sierra Nevada, the world's highest coastal range. The mountains are largely protected within Parque Nacional Tayrona. Hidden on their slopes are the pre-Columbian ruins of La Ciudad Perdida. Although Santa Marta was founded in 1525, modern industry and architecture largely obscure its colonial heritage. Today the city's 200,000 inhabitants rely heavily on the deep-water port, where banana boats are anchored in thick clusters. Most of the cargo is legitimate, but Santa Marta also handles more contraband than any other Colombian port. View more

In the 1970s that meant mostly marijuana; today cocaine reigns supreme. Santa Marta is mostly nonchalant and friendly, but inquisitiveness in this feral, fascinating city is unwise; some of its residents carry weapons as a matter of course.

Excursions depuis Santa Marta

Santa Marta Highlights

Discover the landmarks of Santa Marta during a scenic sightseeing excursion through this historic city.

The Customs House and Gold Museum

Depart the pier for the approximate 45-minute drive to the Customs House. Beautifully restored and preserved, this historical and architectural monument is now the new headquarters of the Bank of the Republic's Gold Museum. Upon arrival, view the museum's pre-Colombian artefact exhibit and a small, yet priceless collection of Tairona gold and pottery pieces.

The Cathedral and Tourism House

Next, re-board your coach and proceed to the Cathedral. Built in 1529, the Church of Santa Ana was the first church in the city. Later elevated to the rank of cathedral, the building is located behind the Convent of Santo Domingo. Also seen during your visit is the Tourism House, which depicts the old colonial style of building.

San Pedro de Alejandrino Villa

Your tour continues with a visit to the 17th-century villa of San Pedro de Alejandrino. Declared a national monument by the Columbian Government, the villa's interior and extensive gardens have been restored to their former glory.

Following your tour of the estate, re-board the coach and drive to the Buena Vista Shopping Centre. Some time is made available here to browse the shops and boutiques before commencing the brief transfer back to the pier.

Please note: Modest dress is suggested to visit the cathedral; ladies are required to have their shoulders and knees covered. This tour involves a moderate amount of walking over uneven terrain, with some steps to negotiate.

Eco Walk in Tayrona National Park

Experience the stunning natural beauty of Columbia during this picturesque, half-day ecological excursion at Tayrona National Park.

Depart the pier for the approximate 45-minute drive to Tayrona National Park. Located in the Atlantic Coast of Columbia, the park is shielded from the Caribbean Sea by huge white rocks and dotted with cobbled paths leading back to the vestiges of the Tayrona Culture. The park spans 29,653 acres (12,000 hectares), and over 8.5 nautical miles (3,000 marine hectares) from sea level to a height of 2,925 feet (900 metres). As a result, it boasts a wide array of flora and fauna that enables the development of different land and marine ecosystems.

Upon arrival, take a guided walk along the Nine Stones path. Along the way, learn about the history of this path and the significance each stone has to the Tayrona culture. The park is also noted for its abundant bird-life.

Next, re-board the coach and drive towards the coast. Stop at the park's facilities for a refreshing beverage and tropical fruit salad. Guests wishing to swim may also visit La Piscinita, or 'Little Pool', a quiet beach. Afterwards, re-board the coach for the approximate 45-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking over uneven terrain, with some steps to negotiate, and is only recommended for guests in good physical condition. It is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Wear light-weight clothing and comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes and bring sun protection and binoculars. Guests wishing to swim should wear a swimsuit under a cover-up and bring a towel.
