Silversea Luxury Cruises À PALERMO (Sicily)

PALERMO (Sicily)

Once the intellectual capital of southern Europe, Palermo has always been at the crossroads of civilization. Favorably situated on a crescent-shaped bay at the foot of Monte Pellegrino, it has attracted almost every culture touching the Mediterranean world. To Palermo's credit, it has absorbed these diverse cultures into a unique personality that is at once Arab and Christian, Byzantine and Roman, Norman and Italian. View more

The city's heritage encompasses all of Sicily's varied ages, but its distinctive aspect is its Arab-Norman identity, an improbable marriage that, mixed in with Byzantine and Jewish elements, created some resplendent works of art. No less noteworthy than the architecture is Palermo's chaotic vitality, on display at some of Italy's most vibrant outdoor markets, public squares, street bazaars, and food vendors, and above all in its grand climax of Italy's most spectacular passeggiata (the leisurely social stroll along the principal thoroughfare).

Excursions depuis PALERMO (Sicily)

Erice & Segesta

Embrace the medieval beauty of Sicily's west coast during this panoramic, full-day excursion to Erice and Segesta.

Erice

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 1.75-hour sightseeing drive through Palermo en route to Sicily's west coast, and a visit to Erice. A small, medieval town perched on an isolated hill north of Trapani, Erice was founded in 415 B.C. and renowned in ancient times as an important sanctuary of Venus. Although it is often shrouded in mist due to its hilltop location, Erice offers splendid panoramic views of the sea and Egadi Islands. Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour through this lovely town.

The Walls

Erice's Norman-style influences are reflected in its imposing towers and fortifications. During your guided walking tour, see the walls that stretch from Porta Spada to Porta Trapani, and protect the only side of the hill with no natural defences. On all other sides, the sheer rock face made the town one of the most impregnable fortresses on the island.

Balio Gardens and Venus Castle

Other historic sites that may be encountered during your visit include the delightful, English-style Balio Gardens and ancient Venus Castle, which offers exquisite panoramic vistas and an up-close look at the remains of the Temple of Venus. Following your guided visit, some free time is made available for you to browse the shops before proceeding for a typical Sicilian lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, re-board your coach for the drive to nearby Segesta.

Segesta

Upon arrival in Segesta, discover why the view of the renowned Doric Temple on a bare hill in the deserted countryside has awed visitors for centuries. Walk up the path and steps from the coach parking area, then past the agave plants and on to this extremely well-preserved temple, which was thought to have been built by a Greek architect between 424-416 B.C. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to the pier via Palermo's historic centre.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 1.2 miles (about 1.9 kilometres), at times over uneven, cobblestone, and slippery surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and stairs at the sites visited. Visit of Erice and Segesta are entirely on foot. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. The tour sequence may vary.

Palermo & Monreale

Sicily's diverse historic landmarks and architectural beauty are yours to discover during this picturesque, half-day excursion to Palermo and Monreale via coach and on-foot.

Palermo, City Centre, Palatine Chapel and Norman Castle

Depart the pier for a brief sightseeing drive through the city of Palermo. As you proceed through the crowded, picturesque streets of this ancient town, pass by the bustling crossroads of Quattro Canti that mark its scenic centre. Palermo's unique Byzantine-Saracen-Norman architecture is a fascinating amalgam of its rich and remarkably diverse heritage. A visit is then made to the impressive Palatine Chapel, located in the Norman, or 'Palazzo dei Normanni'. The chapel's Arabo-Norman influences are reflected in its gold and coloured mosaics, intricately-carved candelabrum and ceiling. Today, the building is the seat of the Sicilian Parliament

Monreale, Cathedral and Benedictine Cloister

Next, re-board your coach and head to Monreale. Upon arrival, a visit is made to the Cathedral, designed and built by William the Good in 1174 A.D. and thought to be Italy's most beautiful Norman Church. With its thick walls and powerful towers, Monreale's exterior looks like an austere fortress; however, the Cathedral's interior is its crowning glory. The large nave has side aisles and grey granite columns that highlight the exquisite Byzantine mosaics adorning the walls above the arches. A visit is also made to the Benedictine Cloister. The courtyard is enclosed by an arcade supported by 216 sets of twin columns, each with a different design and richly-decorated capitals.

Free Time and Shopping

Following your walking tour of Monreale, some free time is made available to visit one of the lovely cafes or browse the local shops at your leisure. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier via Palermo's historic centre.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.5 (about 0.9 kilometres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, many steps (abt 90) from the Monreale parking area to the city centre. Walking in Monreale is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Expect crowds and long lines at the Palatine Chapel ( steps to enter into the site).

Palermo Market & Santa Caterina Church

Leave the pier by coach and start the panoramic sightseeing drive of Palermo.

Palermo sightseeing, city centre walking tour, food market

Comfortably admire from your coach the main monuments such as the Norman Palace, which began life in the Saracen period and altered by the Norman kings; the magnificent Cathedral, built in the 12th century by an Archbishop, transformed into a mosque after the Muslim era; the Felice Gate, the Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the Marina Square and the Garibaldi Gardens.

Leave the coach near Porta Carini and continue on foot to reach the "Al Capo" food market. The market is an animated, characteristic and folkloristic place: the colours, the screams ("vuci") of the vendors, the animation of the stalls, make it an essential element of Palermo city's character. Open every day, it gives the possibility to purchase any kind of grocery and several other merchandise.

Santa Caterina Church, Monastery, tasting

Afterwards, reboard your coach and drive to Santa Caterina Church. The Church stands next to a fourteenth-century monastery of Dominican nuns and was built between 1566 and 1596. The dome was added In the eighteenth century and the choir in 1863. The façade is in late Renaissance style; inside, the chapels are in rococo style with very rich marble decorations and eighteenth-century frescoes, which make it one of the richest churches in Palermo. The visit continues also inside the Monastery, where the cloistered nuns were leaving, exploring their private cells. Weather permitting, access upstairs on the terrace to enjoy a magnificenf view of Palermo centre.

Before returning to the coach, take the oppotunity of tasting some special local sweets. Afterwards drive back to pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking and standing for approximately 0.6 miles-0.74 miles (about one kilometres-1.2 kilometres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and 80/100 steps at the Church and Monastery. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and for guests who utilize a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing and walking shoes are recommended.

Palermo Opera House & Sicilian Puppet Museum

Savour a taste of the arts in Palermo during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Palermo, City Centre, Piazza Verdi, Opera House

Depart the pier and take a brief sightseeing drive through Palermo's city centre. Your first stop is at the Opera House. The Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele is located in Piazza Verdi, and dedicated to King Vittorio Emanuele II. Renowned for its perfect acoustics, it is the biggest opera house in Italy, and third-largest in Europe after the Opéra National de Paris and the K. K. Hof-Opernhaus in Vienna.

Auditorium, Foyer, Royal Sitting Room/Royal Box, Pompeian Hall, Coat-of-Arms Room, Free Time

During your guided visit, explore the stunning Auditorium and most interesting halls, including the Foyer, Royal Sitting Room with the Royal Box, Pompeian Hall (also known as the 'Echo Room' for its perfect acoustics) and the Coat-of-Arms Room. Marvel at the 'Symbolic Wheel' overlooking the Auditorium; it looks like a giant flower with eleven petals that, through a system of ropes, open up to let out the hot air and ventilate the room. Following your tour, some free time is made available to explore Palermo's city centre. Afterward, re-board your coach and head to the International Marionette Museum.

International Marionette Museum, Guided Tour, Puppet Show, Refreshments

This popular, traditional museum of Palermo was established in 1975 by Antonio Pasqualino, when he started its collection of puppets from Sicily and all over the world; after his death in 1995, the museum took his name. Located in the Kalsa Quarter in the former Hotel de France, this 957-square-yard (about 800-square-metre) museum features two floors of puppet displays. In 2017, the museum received the Icom Italia Award for Museum of the Year. Following your guided tour and a puppet show, enjoy some refreshments accompanied by local specialities. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking and standing for approximately 0.6 miles-0.74 miles (about one kilometres-1.2 kilometres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and 50 steps at the Opera House and Museum; a lift is available. Walking in Palermo's town centre is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility and for guests who utilize a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing and walking shoes are recommended.

Palermo Panorama

Palermo, City Centre, Norman Palace and the Cathedral

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute sightseeing drive through Palermo's city centre, a popular holiday destination for local residents. A photo stop is made at the historic Norman Palace, which dates back to the Saracen Period but was altered by the Norman Kings. Afterward proceed to the magnificent Cathedral, which was built in the 12th-century by an archbishop and transformed into a mosque during Muslim occupation. The basilica houses six Royal Tombs, and was restored to the hands of Christianity by the Normans. The remains of Palermo's protector, Ste. Rosalia, are stored in the chapel in an urn of pure silver.
