Padloping Island was originally home to an Inuit community, but in July 1941, a United States Army Air Force team chose the southern Padloping coast as the most promising site for an airport in the region of Baffin Island closest to Greenland. The construction of a 4,000 foot airstrip on the island was recommended. Eventually it proved impractical to build the landing strip and the base was only ever used as a meteorological station. Today, Padloping Island is an isolated spot in the Davis Strait whose ruins tell an interesting tale of one piece of Canada’s role in WWII.
