Silversea Luxury Cruises A Oostende

Ostend, also known as 'Oostende', is a major commercial and fishing port, connected by canals with Bruges and Ghent. Ostend is also an industrial and rail center, as well as a seaside resort. It has a ferry terminal that connects the city with England. Not much larger than the state of Maryland, Belgium is one of the most densely populated nations in Europe. Surrounded by France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, Belgium lies at the crossroads of the continent. View more

Within the country's boundaries are the relics of a colorful past and a promising future. Excellent ports and few natural defenses have long made Belgium a natural battleground. During both World Wars the country was the scene of fierce battles, but its recovery was swift and prosperous. Internal cultural differences between the northern Flemish provinces and the southern Walloon provinces have resulted in an unusual language situation. Flemish is the predominant language in the north; French is spoken in the south. The cruise terminal of Ostend is conveniently located next to the railway station, right in the city center. Its long beaches and lively seaside promenade are within walking distance. The city also serves as a gateway to nearby Bruges, a highly popular destination for its medieval atmosphere, architectural splendors and art treasures.

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate one-hour drive to Ghent, a dynamic modern city with a centre straight out of the Middle Ages.

Ghent City Walking Tour

Upon arrival at the centre of this Medieval city, your guided walking tour commences at St. Michael's Bridge. From here, take in splendid views of Ghent's three glorious Medieval steeples, the early-Gothic St. Nicholas Church, the Belfry dating from 1314 and the honey-coloured tower of St. Bavo's Cathedral in the background.

Canal Boat Ride

Next, proceed to the pontoon and board a canal boat for a cruise through this historic city. Along the way, see highlights that include the impressive Castle of the Counts, Fish Market, 13th-century Monasteries, and the ancient port of Ghent with its mercantile houses. Enjoy a live demonstration on chocolates during this visit. A Belgian chocolate maker shows you how raw chocolate bars are made into the fine Belgian chocolates using only the best of fresh and carefully selected ingredients. Afterwards, there is time to purchase some world famous Belgian chocolates.

Following your visit, some free time is made available for browsing the area shops at your leisure; handmade lace and delicious chocolates are popular items here. Afterwards, re-board your coach for the approximate one-hour return drive to the pier.

Romantic Bruges

mbrace the Old World beauty and charm of Bruges during a scenic sightseeing tour of this romantic city.

Depart the pier for the approximately 30-minute drive to Bruges. Upon arrival in Bruges, often referred to as the 'Venice of the North', commence your guided walking tour through the twisting, narrow streets of the city.

Bruges City Tour

The Medieval aura surrounding Bruges dates from the early-Middle Ages, when the town was world-renowned for its prosperous wool and cloth trade, and as a trading centre and port. The silting of the Zwin Estuary that linked the city to the sea resulted in the decline of Bruges' importance as a trading port. Over the past decade, however, restoration of the old houses, gabled façades and cobblestone streets has made Bruges one of the greatest attractions in Belgium. Large areas have been closed to vehicular traffic.

The Burg

Your first stop is the Burg, a Medieval square in the centre of Bruges and the highlight of this Old World city. See the Town Hall, a jewel of Gothic-style architecture from the 14th century, and among the oldest of its kind in Europe. A bridge arching over the narrow Ezelstraat links the Town Hall with the graceful Old Recorder's House.

Basilica of the Holy Blood and Belfry

On a corner of the Burg stands the Basilica of the Holy Blood. A vial thought to contain drops of Christ's blood is kept in its chapel. From here, proceed to the renowned Belfry. This 275-foot (83-metre) Medieval tower is the city's centrepiece, and dominates Bruges' ancient market square. The Belfry has a carillon and boasts 47 bells.

Canal Boat Ride

At the conclusion of your walking tour, take a 30-minute canal boat ride along the serene waterways of this historic city, and see the arching stone bridges and lovely settings that give Bruges its special character.

Following your boat ride, some free time is made available for lunch and shopping at the Walplein at your leisure; handmade lace and delicious chocolates are popular items here. Afterward, walk past the Lake of Love before you re-board your coach for the approximately 30-minute return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of walking, at time on cobblestone surfaces. The sightseeing boat is not wheelchair-accessible and guests must be able to embark/disembark the boat without assistance. The boats are uncovered and umbrellas are provided in the event of rain. Bruges must be explored on foot. The tour sequence may vary.

Bruges On Your Own

This program offers the flexibility of shopping and sightseeing at your own pace while still having the convenience of easy and reliable transportation to and from the town and the availability of a knowledgeable guide.

Depart by coach from the pier for a thirty-minute drive to Bruges. En-route, an experienced guide, who will lead you to Walplein Square, provides you with a brief background on the city, its main points of interest and answers any questions regarding sites, dining and shopping.

As is the case with many of the strategically located towns and cities throughout Europe, both large and small, Bruges was first established as a Roman fortification by the legions of Julius Caesar in the first century BC. Bruges was granted its town charter in 856 AD and developed into an important trading hub during the Middle Ages. With its public squares and canals, many of the buildings from that period, though restored over the centuries, still grace this beautiful and historic city.

At the appointed time, meet your guide who will escort you to the waiting coach for the transfer back to Bruges.

Please note: This coach transfer tour involves a moderate amount of walking on uneven surfaces and cobblestones. It is intended for guests wishing to pursue their own interests in Bruges. It provides roundtrip coach transportation. Lunch is on your own. Accessibility to venues and canal boats within Bruges for guests who utilise a wheelchair is extremely limited.

Biking to Damme with free time in Bruges

This tour offers a combination of a biking tour in the Flemish countryside with some free time in the beautiful medieval city of Bruges offered on our tour "Bruges on Your Own".

Travel along tree-lined canals and through quaint Flemish villages and past farmlands dotted with windmills. Stop at a local pub for a Belgian beer or soft drink and then start your return ride to Bruges.

Once back in Bruges, enjoy some leisure time to visit the town or explore the many quaint shops offering Belgian chocolates or world-famous Belgian lace.

At the appointed time, meet your guide who will escort you to the waiting coach for the transfer back to Bruges.

Please note: This tour involves riding a bicycle for approximately 10 miles (16 kilometres) and guests should be physically fit to participate. Safety equipment is provided and must be worn. Lunch is on your own.

Ypres & the last post ceremony

Explore the dramatic history of World War I and the battles fought in-and-around Ypres during this memorable, full-day sightseeing excursion.

Ypres

Depart the pier for the brief drive to Ypres. En route, receive a bottle of water and a little box containing two Belgian chocolates. Located in Flanders Fields, Ypres was reduced to rubble by constant bombardments in World War I, and its battlefields are world-renowned. For four years, German and Allied forces fought here without a decisive victory for either side. New weapons such as gas, landmines and missiles left 1,200,000 injured and 500,000 dead. Now restored to its former grandeur, Ypres is home to many poignant wartime sites and monuments.

Tyne Cot and Essex Farm Cemeteries

Your first stop is at Tyne Cot Cemetery, the world's largest commonwealth cemetery, followed by a brief transfer to the Essex Farm Cemetery. This cemetery is among the area's most visited sites due to its association with Canadian doctor Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. On May 3, 1915, the day after witnessing the death of his friend, the doctor wrote a sombre poem that came to symbolise the meaningless slaughter of World War I. Adjacent to the cemetery is a marker with the date commemorating the writing of this poem.

Flanders Fields Museum, Shopping and Dinner

Next, visit the Flanders Fields Museum. Flanders Fields is not a traditional war museum about weapons and strategy; rather, it is about the ordinary people who endured World War I, including soldiers, nurses, fugitives and children. The museum keeps the legacy of those affected by the pathos of World War I alive for future generations. The innovative, high-tech methods used within the museum earned Flanders Fields the title of Best European Museum in 2000. Following your visit, approximately two hours of free time is made available for shopping and dinner at your leisure in Ypres' city centre.

Menin Gate and the Last Post Ceremony

Afterward, meet up with your guide and walk to the Menin Gate, a famous British War Memorial with the names of 54,896 missing soldiers engraved on its walls. At exactly 8 p.m., the regular buglers from the local volunteer Fire Brigade step into the roadway under the Menin Gate and play the Last Post Ceremony. After a brief moment of silence, the buglers play reveille. The Last Post Ceremony has become part of the daily life in Ypres, and the locals are proud of this simple but moving tribute to the courage and self-sacrifice of those who fell in defence of their town. Your tour concludes with a one-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately one mile (about 1.6 kilometres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and at the museum, Menin Gate and Tyne Cot Cemetery. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. The tour sequence may vary.
