Silversea Expedition Cruises A Nome, Alaska

ACX7HW

Nome is located on the edge of the Bering Sea, on the southwest side of the Seward Peninsula. Unlike other towns which are named for explorers, heroes or politicians, Nome was named as a result of a 50 year-old spelling error. In the 1850's an officer on a British ship off the coast of Alaska noted on a manuscript map that a nearby prominent point was not identified. He wrote "? Name" next to the point. View more

When the map was recopied, another draftsman thought that the “?” was a C and that the “a” in "Name" was an o, and thus a map-maker in the British Admiralty christened "Cape Nome." The area has an amazing history dating back 10,000 years of Inupiaq Eskimo use for subsistence living. Modern history started in 1898 when "Three Lucky Swedes”, Jafet Lindberg, Erik Lindblom and John Brynteson, discovered gold in Anvil Creek…the rush was on! In 1899 the population of Nome swelled from a handful to 28,000. Today the population is just over 3,500. Much of Nome's gold rush architecture remains.

Once there, head along Turnagain Arm to charming Girdwood, and the popular Alyeska Resort. Following check-in, the balance of the day (including all meals) is at your leisure. Overnight at the Alyeska Resort, Girdwood, AK

DAY 2 - GIRDWOOD / DENALI

After breakfast at the hotel, board the waiting transportation to depart on a full-day scenic motor coach trip to Denali. A boxed lunch will be provided. Stop en-route at Martin Buser's home for an exclusive visit, where the four-time Iditarod Champion will regale you with tales of the Last Great Race and the wonderful champion dogs he raises and trains for mushing. Martin became fascinated with sled dogs while still a teen. He came to Alaska in 1979 to enhance his knowledge of care and training of sled dogs. He began working and training with long-time Alaskan mushers Earl and Natalie Norris and ran his first Iditarod in 1980.

Arriving in Denali in the mid to late afternoon, check-in to your hotel. Enjoy a reception with a mountain climber speaker. Afterwards you may wish to take advantage of the extended sunlight and enjoy an evening stroll through town. Dinner tonight is on your own.

Overnight at the Grand Denali Lodge (or similar) at Denali National Park

DAY 3 - DENALI

Enjoy a hearty Alaskan-style breakfast at the hotel early this morning before heading out deep into the National Park. As you join with other travelers from around the world on the fully-guided Tundra Wilderness Tour you'll get an ongoing informational talk from your driver/guide, along with wildlife spotting and spectacular scenery. If the weather cooperates, you may even see the majestic summit of Mount McKinley. A box lunch is included.

Watch for moose between headquarters and Savage Campground and look for caribou anywhere above tree line. If you're lucky, Mount McKinley may make its first appearance around Mile 9. You will ride over high mountain passes and will want to keep an eye out for Dall sheep or bears on the mountainsides.

The highest point of the drive -literally and figuratively-is at Polychrome Pass. There, the Plains of Murie extend to the Alaska Range on the horizon. Just a bit further on is the Toklat River and Toklat Bridge. At Mile 62 you'll have a superb photo opportunity of Mount McKinley - assuming the weather cooperates.

Return back to the hotel, the balance of the day is at your leisure. Enjoy dinner on your own this evening.

Overnight at the Grand Denali Lodge at Denali National Park

DAY 4 - DENALI / ANCHORAGE

Late morning, transfer to the rail depot and board the Alaska Railroad (Deluxe Dome Railcar Service) for the scenic ride to Talkeetna. During your thrilling ride through the thick forests and along the edges of steep valleys, you may catch a glimpse of native wildlife from the comfort of your glass-domed rail car. Along the way cross Hurricane Gulch, perched more than 300 feet (91 metres) above the river below

The highlight of today will be passing 300+ feet over Hurricane Gulch. Seating is under windows that extend 180 degrees around you, so you'll be able to thrill at the majesty of this and other sites along the way. There is even an open-air platform if you'd like to step outside and stretch your legs a bit.

Lunch will be served in the dining salon at mid-day. You will be amazed at the variety of items the chefs can prepare - from delicious hot and cold Alaskan specialties to authentic reindeer chili!

At Talkeetna disembark the train and take this opportunity to stretch your legs a bit. Board a motorcoach for the last leg of your journey to Anchorage and the Captain Cook Hotel. Dinner this evening is on your own.

INQUIRE ABOUT UPGRADING TO THE DENALI BY AIR PROGRAM:

Denali Park is the Crown Jewel of the North with unparalleled beauty and grandeur. Unless you set off on a month long climbing expedition in Denali Park there is no other way to experience the amazing landscapes that are hidden from the view from the Denali Park road or Highway. Views from the train or bus can be awe inspiring but these sights only scratch the surface of what one can see from the air.

More glaciers than one can count, most over 20 miles in length, towering granite walls, snow and ice covered peaks for as far as the eye can see are just a few of the attractions you will see on a typical flight.

NOME SIMPLY HOTEL

Our Simply Hotel selection is the perfect choice for those who want a centrally located setting from which to discover - or rediscover - the city. Rooms in these 4.5 and 5-star properties are generally Standard Double or King rooms that provide comfortable accommodations and superior service for those who wish to extend their trip with a cultural or shopping experience in some of the world's most iconic cities.

For your convenience, we can easily organise transfers between the airport and hotel or between the hotel and the pier so that you only have to decide how much or how little you wish to do.

Hotel brands that we consistently feature include Intercontinental, JW Marriott, Fairmont or the Conrad Group.
