Silversea Luxury Cruises A Mataura, Tubuai, Austral Islands

Tubuai, also called Tupua’i, is the main island of the Tubuai Island grouping, which itself is part of the greater Austral Islands in the far southwest of French Polynesia. The island is ringed by a stunning aquamarine lagoon and is formed by a coral reef that contains a natural break at the north side for the passage of ships. On approach to the island, two volcanic domes and half a dozen islets (called motus) that lie along the rim, are visible. View more

The island is estimated to have been inhabited for more than 2,000 years – today the population on the island is 2,170 people. The Austral islands are a source of great art, including artifacts like tall sharkskin drums, wooden bowls, and tapa cloth (ornate cloth made from tree bark). Tubuai Island contains stone remnants of home platforms, marae complexes (maraes are sacred places for religions and social purposes) and cemetery ruins.
