Silversea Luxury Cruises A Manzanillo, Colima

Located on Mexico's Pacific coast, Manzanillo is a small city tucked in the southern corner of a broad bay with two smaller, five-mile-wide bays; the Santiago Bay and to the south its twin, Manzanillo Bay. The protruding Santiago Peninsula separates the two. The town's name is derived from the city's harbor front location, where manzanillos - trees whose poisonous yellowish red fruit resembles a small apple, or manzanillo - thrived beside the first wharves. As one of the country's main commercial ports, the city's history is strongly associated with its favored location, going back to Hernan Cortes who, in search of Chinese treasures in the Pacific, was the first to visit the area. Later in the 1950s and 1960s, the harbor was modernized and deepened, allowing access to all major shipping lines. By the 1970s, Manzanillo had become a major Pacific manufacturing center and port. In addition to its status as a vital port, Manzanillo has become a popular destination for those seeking sun and adventure. The city is divided into two distinct areas: "El Centro," the old downtown clustered around the harbor front; and the greater Manzanillo to the north, with hotels and beautiful beaches. The downtown area offers several attractions for visitors, including a boardwalk that makes for a nice stroll and an interesting archaeological museum. But it's the bustling beach areas that are Manzanillo's main appeal. Visitors can choose from relaxing on a sun-soaked beach to participating in one of many water sports and fishing activities. The latter has helped Manzanillo earn the title "Sailfish Capital of the World." On the Santiago Peninsula stands the famous Las Hadas resort, with its Moorish architecture and gleaming white domes. The resort was the filming location of the movie 10, helping to put Manzanillo on the map. Those who wish to explore beyond the city and its beaches will discover beautiful, natural wonders.
