Silversea Luxury Cruises A London (Greenwich)

485489260

About 8 miles downstream—which means seaward, to the east—from central London, Greenwich is a small borough that looms large across the world. Once the seat of British naval power, it is not only home to the Old Royal Observatory, which measures time for our entire planet, but also the Greenwich Meridian, which divides the world into two—you can stand astride it with one foot in either hemisphere. Bear in mind that the journey to Greenwich is an event in itself. View more

In a rush, you can take the driverless DLR train—but many opt for arriving by boat along the Thames. This way, you glide past famous sights on the London skyline (there’s a guaranteed spine chill on passing the Tower) and ever-changing docklands, and there’s usually a chirpy Cock-er-ney navigator enlivening the journey with his fun commentary. A visit to Greenwich feels like a trip to a rather elegant seaside town—albeit one with more than its fair share of historic sites. The grandiose Old Royal Naval Hospital, designed by Christopher Wren, was originally a home for veteran sailors. Today it’s a popular visitor attraction, with a more glamorous second life as one of the most widely used movie locations in Britain. Greenwich was originally home to one of England's finest Tudor palaces, and the birthplace of Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, and Mary I. Inigo Jones built what is considered the first "classical" building in England in 1616—the Queen's House, which now houses a collection of fine art. Britain was the world’s preeminent naval power for over 500 years, and the excellent National Maritime Museum> details that history in an engaging way. Its prize exhibits include the coat worn by Admiral Lord Nelson (1758–1805) in his final battle—bullet hole and all. The 19th-century tea clipper Cutty Sark was nearly destroyed by fire in 2007, but reopened in 2012 after a painstaking restoration. Now it’s more pristine than ever, complete with an impressive new visitor center. Greenwich Park, London's oldest royal park, is still home to fallow red deer, just as it has been since they were first introduced here for hunting by Henry VIII. The Ranger's House now houses a private art collection, next door to a beautifully manicured rose garden. Above it all is the Royal Observatory, where you can be in two hemispheres at once by standing along the Greenwich Meridian Line, before seeing a high-tech planetarium show. Toward north Greenwich, the hopelessly ambitious Millennium Dome has been successfully reborn as the O2 and now hosts major concerts and stand-up comedy gigs. More adventurous visitors can also go Up the O2 on a climbing expedition across the massive domed surface. Meanwhile, those who prefer excursions of a gentler kind may prefer to journey a couple of miles south of the borough, farther out into London’s southern suburbs, to the shamefully underappreciated Eltham Palace. Once a favorite of Henry VIII, parts of the mansion were transformed into an art deco masterpiece during the 1930s.

Exceptionally for Silversea guests, the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) will open its doors and archives giving you a rare chance to understand their work from inside one of the finest Grade 11 listed Victorian buildings in London.

With over two-million items celebrating 500 years of geographical travel and exploration, this event is a must for anyone curious about the world in which we live. See how the world has changed since the first ever atlas; marvel at hand-drawn maps for reaching the South Pole; or contemplate the simplicity of Darwin's pocket sextant that accompanied him through the Galapagos. An extraordinary opportunity to uncover the Society's treasures that is simply not to be missed!

Departure from the pier at approx. 5pm for an approximate 1 hr and 30 mins drive to the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) in London.

London Panoramic and London Eye

Discover the many renowned landmarks of London during this panoramic, half-day sightseeing excursion via coach and the London Eye.

London Bridge, St. Paul Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, Parliament Square

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately two-hour orientation drive through London. Along the way, pass by some of London's most famous landmarks. View the fabled Tower of London and London Bridge, and pass by Sir Christopher Wren's masterpiece, St. Paul's Cathedral. From here, head to the West End and London's theatre district, then see Admiral Nelson atop his column in Trafalgar Square. Your drive continues past Buckingham Palace en route to a photo stop in Parliament Square. Here, marvel at the magnificent architecture all around the square, including the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, glorious Westminster Abbey and statues of major international political figures.

London Eye, River Thames, Houses of Parliament, Big Ben

Next, experience an aerial view of this amazing city at the London Eye, still one of London's most spectacular attractions. Upon arrival at the London Eye, located across the River Thames from the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, board your private, specially-reserved capsule, which accommodates up to 25 people.

Welcome Drink, London City Landmarks

After receiving a welcome glass of champagne, begin your 'flight', which offers breath-taking views across London and the River Thames. Whether you've been to London before or are a first-time visitor, this wonderful experience shows you many of the most famous buildings and sites in London at a glance. The London Eye moves around very slowly, giving you plenty of time to observe and take photos of many impressive city views. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 328 yards (about 300 metres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and five-six steps to enter/exit the capsules. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility, but is not wheelchair-accessible. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection and a weatherproof jacket or coat from the ship. Guests must be at least 21 years old to be served alcoholic beverages.

Panoramic London & Heathrow Transfer

This leisurely half day coach tour is a great way to obtain an overall impression of one of the most lively and interesting cities in the world. A city that welcomes you to its red buses and friendly 'Bobbies', great churches, imposing statues and many elegant pubs.

London and the West End

Commence the tour in the 'City', and then continue to the `West End`, the part of central London west of the City's limits. London would not be London without its captivating `square mile` of old City - the historic and intriguing area around which modern London as we know it has grown and where the medieval and Georgian atmosphere still survives.

Westminster, Whitehall and St. James's

Pass Westminster, Whitehall and St. James's section of London, the coach then crosses Westminster Bridge, and passes by the neo-Gothic Parliament buildings presiding over the banks of the River Thames and its adjacent 320 foot clock tower of Big Ben. From Parliament Square look across to St. Margaret's Church. Standing adjacent is the architectural and masterpiece of the 13th to 16th centuries - Westminster Abbey. It represents a unique pageant of British history as the setting for every Coronation since 1066, and for numerous other Royal occasions. The Guide will point out the main external features of the building and a photo stop is made to take photographs of the outside.

Boarding the coach you will then see Whitehall, passing the end of Downing Street and the Cenotaph war memorial and past Horse Guard's Parade. Afterwards travel along the broad triumphal approach to Buckingham Palace - The Mall which is lined on one side by the delightful St. James's Park, a quiet and relaxed oasis with its flowerbeds and its ducks and pelicans on the lake. James's Palace; still the Court's official headquarters and adjacent Clarence House Clarence House - London home of Prince Charles and Princes William and Harry. Pass the Admiralty Arch which separates courtly London from the hurly burly of Trafalgar Square that stands imposing Nelson's Column.

Afterwards leave the hustle and bustle of central London and head to Heathrow airport to connect with your outbound flight.

Please note: This tour is offered to guests disembarking the ship with flights from London Heathrow International Airport at 3:00pm or later and will end at the airport. It requires a minimal amount of walking. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair; however, guests must be able to embark and disembark the coach via the coach steps. Upon arrival at the coach parking area, pass through security and begin your walking tour of Windsor Castle. Your visit focuses on the castle's two most outstanding features, the State Apartments and St. George's Chapel. 2NT PRE-CRUISE ENGLISH MANOR RETREAT

Revel in the pastoral tranquility of a unique hotel - a refined retreat with more than a few surprises. Set in 240 acres of picturesque parkland on the borders of Windsor Great Park, Coworth Park blends the warmth and comfort of a traditional country house hotel with an eccentric spirit that is undeniably English and irrefutably modern.

Please check with your travel professional for details regarding visa requirements for England. It is the responsibility of the guest to obtain all appropriate visas before your cruise.

DAY 1 - ARRIVE COWORTH PARK

You are met at either Gatwick or Heathrow airport according to your flight arrangements and transferred to the heart of Berkshire.

Coworth Park House is a handsome Georgian building dating back to 1776. It is perhaps best known as the home of the 17th Earl of Lord Derby who bought it in 1899 and lived there for almost 50 years until his death in 1948. An association with equestrianism began even before he bought the estate; the Prince and Princess of Wales, the future King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra stayed there in 1879 and 1883 to enjoy the racing at nearby Ascot.

The rest of the afternoon and evening are at your leisure to enjoy this historic home that has welcomed royalty and other notables for centuries. Lunch and dinner are on your own account. If you'd like to dine in the hotel's fine dining restaurant during your stay, these arrangements should be made well in advance.

Overnight at Coworth Park

Outdoor enthusiasts can find plenty to do - there are rambling trails that cover the 240-acre grounds, the on-site equestrian centre gives lesson in riding, Guards Polo Academy at Coworth Park gives polo lessons, and tennis, fishing, shooting, and croquet can all be arranged. Golfers might be interested in teeing up at The Wentworth Club, and the historic royal hunting ground of Windsor Great Park is within walking distance. At Runnymede, the Royal Air Force Memorial is serene, beautiful and poignant, with impressive views of the Thames. The UK's most famous racecourse, Ascot, is a mere 10-minute drive away.

Both lunch and dinner today are on your own account. The UK's foodiest village, Bray, is about 25-minutes away and offers everything from Michelin-starred fine dining to gourmet gastropub fare.
