Silversea Luxury Cruises À ISAFJORDUR

ISAFJORDUR

Two colossal terraces of sheer rock stand either side of this extraordinarily located town - which rides a jutting spit onto an immensity of black fjord water. Surprisingly, considering the remoteness of its location and its compact size, Isafjordur is a modern and lively place to visit, offering a great choice of cafes and delicious restaurants – which are well stocked to impress visitors. The town is a perfectly located base for adventures amongst Iceland's fantastic wilderness - with skiing, hiking and water-sports popular pursuits among visitors.

Excursions depuis ISAFJORDUR

History at Heistery

Experience the distinctly eerie atmosphere of a beautiful abandoned fjord during this half-day excursion to an Icelandic ghost town.

After a brief walk to the floating pier, embark your boat for the 70-minute ride to the abandoned village of Hesteyri. Impressive, steep, snow-flecked mountains and quiet, secluded coves highlight the beautiful landscape of the Jokulfirdir Fjord.

In the late-1940s, all 80 inhabitants of Hesteyri made the decision to move away. At the time, they lived without telephone, electricity and roads. By 1952, the village was completely abandoned.

Upon arrival, take a stroll around the abandoned village with your guide and stop by the old doctor's house for traditional Icelandic refreshments. Following your visit, embark the boat for the approximate 70-minute ride back to the floating pier and return to the ship on-foot.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking over paved, gravel, uneven and rough surfaces, with a gangway to negotiate in order to embark/disembark the boat, and a steep staircase to get downstairs and access the seating area. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Operation of this tour is subject to weather conditions.

Life & Culture

Explore the traditional culture and lifestyle on the western fjords of Iceland during this scenic sightseeing tour of Ísafjörður and its environs.

Bolungarvik and Osvor

Depart the pier for the brief drive through the town centre, then proceed along a narrow coastal road towards Bolungarvik, a village located on a picturesque bay surrounded by steep mountains. Upon arrival, visit the Holskirkja Church and an old fisherman's hut named Osvor. These traditional, grass-roofed huts situated along the rocky shore offer a unique insight into the lifestyle of Icelandic fishermen until the early-20th century.

Seljalandsdalur Waterfall

Next, drive to the valley of Seljalandsdalur to see the waterfall and taste refreshing Icelandic water from the river. After a photo stop for scenic views overlooking Ísafjörður, the harbour and your ship, re-board your coach and return to town.

Maritime Museum

Your last stop is at the Maritime Museum. The museum is situated in one of the oldest houses in Ísafjörður and three other well-preserved historic homes, all circa-1780. Typical Icelandic refreshments, including schnapps, dried fish and shark (preserved Icelandic-style), are served in the museum before re-boarding your coach for the brief drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, with uneven, gravel and grass surfaces, and steps and stairs to negotiate. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. The tour sequence may vary.

Taste of the West Fjords

Indulge your senses with gourmet tastings, local history in remote, beautiful and sustainable Suðureyri and learn how

the fishing industry has shaped Iceland's culture, past and present.

Visit the beautiful Suðureyri village, a destination you feel you've got all to yourself. In Suðureyri everything is about fish. This is your chance to hear about life at the edge of the Arctic Circle. See for yourself how the thriving community processes Iceland's finest fish and get a fresh taste of it while listening to local stories. Learn why Iceland's first class export product can be on your domestic dinner plate just 36 hours after leaving the ice-cold Atlantic Ocean water, and just how unbelievably sustainable the village operates. If you like food & travel don't miss this gourmet tour.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking .3 miles (600 metres) and it is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilize a wheelchair, able to embark and disembark the coach via steps. Flat, comfortable shoes and warm clothing is recommended.

The Troll's Throne

In Norse mythology, trolls were known as dim-witted gigantic man-eating creatures who lived in caverns in the mountain and hollow hills. At one time Iceland was densely populated with trolls of different types. Local legend tells of a huge troll that went for a stroll in the fjord and sat down to take a rest on the top of big mountain high above town. The troll was so heavy that as it sat down, it squashed part of the mountain side beneath it, leaving behind a visible indentation which has since become a very popular hiking route for guests and locals alike.

Depart the pier via coach for the short ride to the base of the Trolls' Throne. A moderately strenuous ascending hike of approximately 740 feet (225 metres) brings you to the top. There is no designated path to follow, but the terrain offers a mixture of grass, soil and sheep paths. Once at the top, enjoy wonderful views of the town of Isafjordur, the picturesque fjord and the ship.

Returning to the bottom the path, re-board the coach for the return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking uphill, along uneven grassy and dirt pathways. It is not suitable for guests who utilise a wheelchair or those with limited mobility. Closed, sturdy footwear with rubber or non-slip soles is recommended.

Experience the diverse bird-life, local lifestyle and history of Vigur Island during this scenic and informative tour via boat and on foot.

Vigur Island

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate 40-minute boat-ride to Vigur Island, a green oasis in the blue waters of the Isafjardardjup Fjord. Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour of the island. Along the way, marvel at the picturesque beauty and splendid bird-life on the island. Each spring, the island is the nesting-place for countless birds, including puffins, arctic terns and black guillemots.

Vigur Island Landmarks

During your visit, see some relics of old farming methods on Vigur, including Iceland's only windmill. Built in 1840 and in operation until 1917, the windmill was used for grinding imported wheat from Denmark. The windmill has been carefully preserved, as is a 200-year-old, 8-oar rowboat, which is still used to ferry sheep to the mainland.

Vigur Island Home Visit

Only three families live on Vigur Island, and the houses date back to the 19th century. Viktoria House, erected in Vigur in 1862, was made of Norwegian wood, and restored by the National Museum of Iceland in 1993. The second home was erected by a young priest in 1884, an ancestor of the families living in Vigur today. Stop by a local home for coffee or tea accompanied by cake. Following your visit, embark the boat for the approximate 30-minute ride back to the pier in Ísafjörður.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking over paved, gravel, uneven and rough surfaces, with a gangway to negotiate in order to embark and disembark the boat, and a steep staircase to get downstairs and access the seating area. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. Operation of this tour is subject to weather conditions.

Along the way, observe puffins, eider ducks and other diverse seabird species flying around the area before their migration around the 10th of August each year. It is also common to see seals frolicking in these waters, and some free time for photography is included. At the conclusion of your excursion, return to the pier. Upon arrival, disembark your RIB boat for the short walk back to the ship.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 218 yards (about 200 metres), with a few steps to negotiate to embark/disembark the RIB boat.
