Silversea Luxury Cruises À INVERGORDON (Highland)

INVERGORDON (Highland)

The port of Invergordon is your gateway to the Great Glen, an area of Scotland that includes Loch Ness and the city of Inverness. Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, has the flavor of a Lowland town, its winds blowing in a sea-salt air from the Moray Firth. View more

The Great Glen is also home to one of the world's most famous monster myths: in 1933, during a quiet news week, the editor of a local paper decided to run a story about a strange sighting of something splashing about in Loch Ness. But there's more to look for here besides Nessie, including inland lochs, craggy and steep-sided mountains, rugged promontories, deep inlets, brilliant purple and emerald moorland, and forests filled with astonishingly varied wildlife, including mountain hares, red deer, golden eagles, and ospreys.

Excursions depuis INVERGORDON (Highland)

Cawdor Castle & Culloden Batllefield

Explore the Castles, Clans and Battles that shaped Scotland's Medieval past during this memorable, half-day excursion.

Cawdor Castle

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately one-hour drive along the Cromarty Firth and through the outskirts of Inverness en route to Cawdor Castle, the most romantic castle in the Highlands. One of the finest and most picturesque Medieval buildings in Scotland, Cawdor Castle retains a central tower believed to date from the end of the 14th century. This legendary castle is familiar to anyone who has read Shakespeare's Macbeth, as it is the scene of King Duncan's murder.

Self-Guided Castle Tour

As you cross the drawbridge, step into Scotland's Medieval past. The castle feels like a living home rather than a museum, as it is indeed the residence of the Cawdor family. During your self-guided tour, enter the low doorways, climb the winding stairs, look out from windows set deep in massive walls and marvel at the beautiful woven tapestries. See the centuries-old stonework, snug sitting-room in the core of the Tower, forbidding dungeon, freshwater well, and the original kitchens. Following your tour of the

castle and gardens, re-board your coach and drive to nearby Culloden Battlefield.

Culloden Battlefield

No place in British history stirs the emotions more than Culloden. On 16 April 1746, a battle was fought here to decide a civil war between the ruling House of Hanover and the Jacobites. The brutal Duke of Cumberland, son of King George II, and his 8,000 well trained and equipped army defeated 5,500 exhausted, starving and ill-equipped Highlanders led by Bonnie Prince Charlie. It was the last battle on British soil and ended the House of Stuart's hopes of regaining the throne. During a stop here, see

wooden plaques detailing the battle, clan graves and the Well of the Dead, where wounded Highlanders were slain as they drank water to revive themselves. Following your visit, commence the approximately 1-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking and stair-climbing at Cawdor Castle, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, a sweater or jacket, flat, closed toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Due to the local climate, most of the coaches are air-cooled. The tour sequence may vary.

Glenmorangie Distillery & Lovely Dornoch

Explore the splendid beauty, landmarks and flavours of the Scottish Highlands during this scenic, half-day excursion.

Glenmorangie Distillery Tour and Tasting

Depart the pier and head for nearby Tain and the world-renowned home of Glenmorangie malt whisky. Glenmorangie means 'The Glen of Tranquillity'. After an approximately 30-minute drive to the shores of the Dornoch Firth, take a guided tour of the facility. Along the way, observe the production process and learn about the history of this small town, the distillery and the Sixteen Men of Tain, whose skills, expertise and incredible patience are responsible for the delightful Glenmorangie malt whisky. Your guided tour concludes with a tasting of this delicious malt.

Dornoch

Next, re-board your coach and proceed north to the glorious Edwardian coastal town of Dornoch for some free time to explore and shop. The town's major attraction is the charming 13th - century Cathedral; an island of grass and trees surrounds its cruciform shape. On December 21, 2000, the pop star Madonna had her son Rocco christened here, the day before her wedding

to Guy Ritchie in nearby Skibo Castle. Your guide will be pleased to escorts guests to the cathedral during your time here.

Finally, enjoy the relaxed drive back to Invergordon

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, approximately 50 stairs at the distillery and standing for 1.5 hours. Walking around Dornoch is at the discretion of the guest. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, a sweater or jacket, flat, closed toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Due to the local climate, most of the coaches are air cooled. Guests must be at least 21 years old to participate in the whisky-tasting. Space on this tour is very limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment. If tour is cancelled within 72 hours of operation, cancellation charges will apply.

In The Pursuit of Tartan

Depart Invergordon with your guide and head to Scotland's only Visitor Attraction devoted to their famous national dress! You'll enjoy a fascinating insight into the history, tradition and culture of the kilt. The Centre creates a colourful, authentic and memorable experience, brought to life by audio-visual, costume and tartan displays in all their brilliance. You will be led through the exhibition space by one of their very own expert guides.

There will be free time to peruse the impressive shop which has a range of superior gifts, Tartans, Tweeds, Clan Items, Jewellery, Kilts and Highland Dress accessories as well as enjoying a refreshment of Tea or Coffee with a scone and shortbread.

Once you have been suitably informed as to what Tartan means to Scotland and its culture, you will then have the opportunity to don a kilt and all it's trimmings (for the men) or a beautiful sash and brooch (for the ladies). Don't forget to take your camera!!! You will be allowed to wear your Highland Dress outside where a photo opportunity awaits you with the beautiful and imposing Inverness Castle as the backdrop.

Then it's time to change back into your regular attire and board your motor coach which will take you back to Invergordon where your ship awaits you.

Loch Ness Cruise & Historic Urquhart Castle

Explore the mystery of Scotland's most beloved legend during this memorable excursion to Loch Ness and the ruins of Urquhart Castle.

Loch Ness

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 60-minute drive south to the banks of Loch Ness. Upon arrival at Dochgarroch harbour, embark the charming boat for a short cruise to Urquhart Castle. This tour represents a unique opportunity to look for the evasive Loch Ness Monster, which has baffled some of the world's most notable researchers for decades. The deep lake, ('loch' in Gaelic), has drawn visitors from all over the world in search of the monster. The loch is 23 miles (about 37 kilometres) long, one mile (1.6 kilometres) wide and 755 feet (230 metres) deep. Enroute to Urquhart Castle, you can learn more about the Loch and the Monster.

Urquhart Castle

Upon arrival, disembark the boat and walk to the jagged and atmospheric ruins of Urquhart Castle, situated on a rocky promontory jutting into Loch Ness. During its turbulent history, the castle was plundered by the MacDonald clan of the Western Isles and eventually blown up in 1692 to prevent its occupation by Jacobites. Today, all that remains is a lone keep and crumbling walls. However, legends persist that a cave beneath the castle is the home of 'Nessie', the Loch Ness Monster. The path leading

up from Urquhart Castle offers superb views of the ruins and the loch. You can also browse the interesting Visitor Centre and gift shop.

Beauly

Following your visit to the castle, depart Loch Ness for the gentle return journey to Invergordon via the small town of Beauly. Well known for its lovely flower displays and home to the now ruined 13th Century priory which lies in the heart of the village, Beauly is a charming traditional Scottish town. It also boasts a lovely, spacious central square, laid out by Baron Lovat in the 1840s. Beauly is the ideal place to purchase tweeds, knitwear and local crafts.

After some free time to explore and perhaps buy some mementos of your visit, depart for the final leg of your journey back to your ship in Invergordon.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking, including an uphill walk from the jetty to the main entrance at Urquhart Castle, from the Castle to the Visitor Centre and from the Visitor Centre to the coach park with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and embark/disembark the boat. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, a sweater or jacket, raingear, flat, closed -toe walking shoes, and sun protection are recommended. Due to the local climate, most of the coaches are air-cooled.
