Silversea Luxury Cruises A Ilheus

Located in the state of Bahia, 240 miles south of Salvador, Ilheus is best known as the place described by Brazil’s famous novelist, Jorge Amado, in Gabriela, Cravo e Canela (Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon). He grew up on a cocoa plantation and later lived in Ilheus while working on his first novel. Ilheus was just a small, sleepy town until cocoa was introduced into the region in 1881. View more

On hilltop plantations surrounding the town, farming cocoa became the new boom crop – the white gold of Brazil and the raw material for chocolate. When a disease broke out, devastating large areas of cocoa trees, many of the plantations were lost. Today, travelers are discovering this region through the much-translated and filmed novels of Jorge Amado and because Ilheus features one of the best beaches in Bahia. Please Note: The infrastructure in this port is limited. There are no organized tours offered in Ilheus. Time ashore here is at your leisure. Pier Information The ship is scheduled to be docked at Porto Malhado, the commercial port of Ilheus. The center of town can be reached via a 10-minute taxi drive. Taxis are generally available at the port entrance. Fares should be established before leaving the port. There are no English-speaking drivers. Shopping A variety of shops line the downtown pedestrian street named Jorge Amado. However, most shops carry items that are mainly of interest to the local population. The currency is the Real. Cuisine As a Bahian port, seafood with plenty of traditional African spices is a favorite. Regional dishes or a Brazilian barbecue in a typical churrascaria are also very popular. Excellent Brazilian beer or the national drink, caipirinha (made from sugar cane rum and tropical fruit juices), go well with with a local meal. Other Sites Beaches Approximately a 10-15 minute drive away is one of Ilheus’ beaches, with restaurants, umbrellas and restrooms and that is also very popular with locals.
