Ganges is a small village at the end of the harbour on the eastern shores of Salt Spring Island. Ganges Harbour, for which Ganges was named) was originally called Admiralty Bay but was renamed by Captain Richards in 1859 after the HMS Ganges, the last sailing ship of the British Royal Navy to serve as a flagship. In the late 1850’s there were several waves of settlers. View more

They were mostly British immigrants (English, Scottish, and Irish) but also included American slaves who had purchased their freedom, Hawaiians who had worked with the Hudson Bay Company and others from America, Australia and Europe who had been attracted to Canada as part of the gold rush. Prior to this, first nation’s people used the island for seasonal fishing and hunting. Today, it is a multi-cultural community. One of the iconic “must-sees” in Ganges is the ex-Coast Guard buoy "Delta 10" that has been decorated with a marine-themed mural.
