Silversea Luxury Cruises A Fethiye

Fethiye

Originally known as the town of Telmessos, the history of this area dates back to 400 BC. The town was first mentioned by Pericles of Lymra, who seized the town as part of his Lycian confederation. It was next ruled under Alexander the Great until his death: then coming under the rule of Pergamon and finally Rome. In 168 BC, Telmessos entered the Lycian confederacy and became an important center by the Byzantine period. View more

During the Ottoman period it was called Megri, but the name was abandoned for the modern name of Fethye in the 19th century. Violent earthquakes in the 1850's and again a century later destroyed the old city. The town of today was completely rebuilt after 1957. Very little remains of the city’s previous structures. The ancient city has not been excavated and only the remains of a fortress built by the Knights of Rhodes crowns a hill above the town. Today, the town is a popular harbor and resort area located at the head of a beautiful bay strewn with islands.
