Originally known as the town of Telmessos, the history of this area dates back to 400 BC. The town was first mentioned by Pericles of Lymra, who seized the town as part of his Lycian confederation. It was next ruled under Alexander the Great until his death: then coming under the rule of Pergamon and finally Rome.
