Located in the north western corner of Ecuador, Esmeraldas is the capital of the province of the same name and has been an influential port throughout the country’s history. Fishing and shipping are important industries, and an oil refinery provides additional income. European feet first touched Ecuadorian soil here, when the Spanish landed on the Pacific coast in 1526.
