Silversea Luxury Cruises À Durban

Durban

Durban has the pulse, the look, and the complex face of Africa. If you wander into the Indian District or drive through the Warwick Triangle—an area away from the sea around Julius Nyerere (Warwick) Avenue—the pulsating city rises up to meet you. Traditional healers tout animal organs, vegetable and spice vendors crowd the sidewalks, and minibus taxis hoot incessantly as they trawl for business. It is by turns colorful, stimulating, and hypnotic. It's also a place steeped in history and culture. View more

Gandhi lived and practiced law here, and Winston Churchill visited as a young man. It's home to the largest number of Indians outside India; the massive Indian townships of Phoenix and Chatsworth stand as testimony to the harsh treatment Indians received during apartheid, though now thousands of Indians are professionals and businesspeople in Durban. Street names have all been updated, but the old ones remain in brackets as some maps and locals still refer to streets by the old names. By no means should you plan an entire vacation around Durban, because there is so much more to see beyond the city. Nevertheless, it's definitely worth a stopover. To get the most from your visit, get ready to explore the Central Business District (CBD), which includes the Indian District; the Beachfront; and Berea and Morningside.

Excursions depuis Durban

African Market Experience

Discover how the diverse cultural influences from Asia, Africa and Europe have contributed to the development and unique character of Durban during this scenic, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Durban City Drive, Local Landmarks, Victoria Street Market, Fine Silks, Spices, Herb Market

Depart the pier for the short drive through Durban City. Follow the palm tree-lined Victoria Embankment, then pass by the Vasco Da Gama Clock, Dick King Statue, imposing Durban Club and the Yacht Club en route to the Victoria Street Market. Upon arrival, learn about Indian spices, and take a guided tour of this vivid and colourful market filled with fine silks, calicos, and more. From here, walk to the Herb Market. Here, you can grind herbs and discover cures for various ailments, as well as love potions. This visually-captivating market is unique to Durban, and highlights the differences between Western and African medicine.

Bead Market, Beading Demonstration, Hair-Braiding and Tying with Beads, Photo Opportunity

Next, a visit is made to the Bead Market, a colourful exhibition with works of beads from vendors who travel from the coastal regions adjacent to the city to sell products they have designed and handcrafted. Products include beaded jewellery, hats, shoes, bags, and traditional clothing. During your visit, you can observe the traders at work, get a strand of your own hair braided and tied with beads, or adorn yourself with beaded products for a memorable photo opportunity.

City Drive, City Hall, Local History Museum, Post Office, Currie Road Viewpoint, Golden Mile Beach

Leaving the Bead Market, take a sightseeing drive into the City Centre and past Cato Square, adjacent to Durban's century-old City Hall. A close copy of the Town Hall of Belfast, City Hall houses the Natural History Museum, a Concert Hall, Art Gallery and municipal offices. From here, pass by the Local History Museum, Post Office, Old Inland Revenue Building and Reserve Bank en route to the Currie Road Viewpoint, which offers spectacular panoramic views over the city. After a photo stop here, commence the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier via the Golden Mile Beachfront, where Zulu rickshaw clad in their colourful regalia transport visitors in their decorated rickshaws.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking and standing for approximately 0.93 miles (about 1.5 kilometres), at times over uneven and natural surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and two-five steps at the sites visited. Walking at the markets is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Guests must be at least six years old to participate on this tour; minors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over 18 years old. The tour sequence may vary.

Midlands Zip-Lining Canopy Tour

Pump up your adrenaline with this unique eco-experience that takes you on a 2-hour adventure through the magnificent Karkloof indigenous forest.

The canopy tour involves traversing from one platform to another along a steel cable suspended up to 98 feet (30 metres) above the forest floor. The tour comprises seven platforms and eight slides that zig-zag down a pristine forested valley. The scenery and birdlife is spectacular and professional guides provide interesting facts about the forest ecology during the tour. The slides are up to 574 feet (175 metres) long and provide unforgettable rides and spectacular views over the forest canopy.

Depart the quayside and drive via Pietermaritzburg to the Karkloof indigenous forest, which is located in the heart of the Natal Midlands.

The tour begins with a detailed safety briefing followed by a 'kitting up' session where full body harness, pulleys and climbing equipment is put on and safety-checked. A short scenic drive to the top of the Karkloof valley and it is time to monkey around! Construction of the Karkloof Canopy Tour has been done in accordance with strict civil engineering standards. A full environment impact study was undertaken to ensure that the forest ecology would not be harmed in any way.

From the start on the launch platform a new world unfolds as one gently glides on a steel cable from platform to platform. Spend a couple of minutes relaxing on the platforms while your guides enthusiastically explain the ecology of the forest - pointing out different trees and the magnificent giant ferns way below. The bird life is incredible. This includes the opportunity of spotting Emerald Cuckoos, Knysna Loeries, a wide variety of raptors and if you are lucky, the elusive Narina Trogon or endangered Cape Parrots.

Once back safely on the ground a light snack will be enjoyed before boarding your awaiting coach to head back to Durban and your awaiting ship.

SOS Children's Village

Take this opportunity to learn more about the important contribution this organization is making internationally, during this half-day outing to 'Give Back'.

Depart from the quayside in Durban and drive by coach to SOS Children's Village.

This Village was developed in response to a call for help from a city pediatrician, who was concerned at the high number of orphans abandoned at government hospitals. The Village houses 152 children, as well as reaching 962 children in the highly successful Family Strengthening Programs.

In 1992, the Natal Emergency Help Program was launched to provide temporary accommodation in rented houses for orphans living in very poor conditions in government hospitals. Once suitable land was found, a Village was built consisting of 15 family homes and an SOS Kindergarten.

The SOS Kindergarten caters for 125 children in 5 classrooms. Children in the nearby informal settlement who could normally not afford to attend pre-school are offered a scholarship to come to the Kindergarten. The teachers are also committed to building the capacity of teachers in community crèche's, by conducting holiday skills training sessions.

The Family Strengthening Program operates in the informal settlement called France, situated close to the Village. A hydroponics vegetable project has been established with the support of the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal's wife, Mrs. Ndebele. Nine women from France grow and market tomatoes and mushrooms, thus generating income for their own families. Another successful project is the self-help groups which involve poor women in small-scale savings and income generation.

On arrival at the village proceed to visit the Family Strengthening Program, a community project next to the village where the homes are headed by children. Here you will visit two or three homes and then continue to the 'White House', where everything is coordinated for the project e.g. Distribution of food parcels, bereavement programs, South Africa Department of Home Affairs help with Birth certificates and Identity Documents. You will also visit the knitting, sewing or gardening projects in the community with a presentation from your coordinator.

Return to the village which caters for the little ones as well as children from the nearby community. Proceed on a tour of the village and a presentation. After the presentation and tour, spend some time at the 'house of the week'. The Village has a few different houses with a House Mother and each week a house has the opportunity to be 'house of the week', during the presentation this will be discussed in more detail.

Return to the quayside in Durban.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking. It is not wheelchair accessible and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility due to the nature of the terrain. Some sites visited on this tour are in extreme poverty, but with the aid of the government and NGO's the communities are busy being uplifted, making it a place of hope. One needs to be prepared for this aspect of the tour, as it is definitely a "no frills experience". If guests wish to donate directly to the school or community project i.e. stationery, canned foods or money, it will be most welcomed; however we suggest that this is done directly to the SOS representative to ensure equitable distribution. The more we can help the better. Please visit the following website for more information on how you can help: http://www.soschildrensvillages.org/Where-we-help/Africa/South-Africa/Pietermaritzburg/Pages/default.aspx

All proceeds of this tour will be donated on behalf of the guests by Silversea Cruises to the SOS Children's Village.

Valley of a Thousand Hills

Meet modern and olden day African tribal culture in the traditional and spectacular homeland of the Zulu on this half-day exploration of the 'Valley of a Thousand Hills'.

Depart the pier aboard your coach and drive via the national road for approximately one hour towards the Phezulu Safari Park. In this geographically wondrous part of the world shaped first by the windings of the great Mgeni River, then by the culture of the Zulu tribes and finally by the coming of European man, the hills still beat to the Zulu drum.

As you journey into the valley, learn how historically these tranquil rolling hills belie the blood-soaked drama that unfolded almost two centuries ago. It was then when the Zulu King Shaka, known to historians as the 'Black Napoleon', subjugated the tribes that today make up the Kingdom of the Zulu.

Your visit to Phezulu (an open-air museum) creates the opportunity to discover first-hand the intricacies, ethnic customs and beliefs of the Zulu people. Here Zulu tales and history are depicted in energetic, costumed song and dance by the renowned Gasa clan, who have been performing unique plays for over 40 years. Dances of courtship and betrothal, of the throwing of the Sangoma's (witch doctor) bones, of war and of birth, set to the mesmerising beat of the Zulu drum, take you into another world.

Afterwards, explore the Zulu cultural village on your own with its traditional beehive huts and fascinating glimpses into African tribal culture. Learn what the different coloured beads that adorn the skirts actually represent and how the women make bread and beer. Venture into Phezulu's impressive reptile park, taking home vivid images of some of Africa's most renowned snakes and learning about the crocodiles. Tea, coffee and refreshments are served during the course of the tour and there is time to browse through a wealth of ethnic home crafts on sale in the well-stocked curio shop, ranging from pottery, Zulu fabric art, woodcarving, beadwork and curios.

Following your visit, commence the return back to the pier in Durban via the national highway.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking and it is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Flat, comfortable walking shoes and sun hats are strongly recommended. There are paved pathways and some uneven, sandy terrain, where the show will be held. The ground can be muddy after heavy rainfall. There is a wooden boardwalk, with a few steps, through the snake & crocodile enclosure. The villagers at this open-air museum are actors educating guests with the ways of the traditional Zulu people. It is Zulu tradition for young, unmarried women to go topless. There is a local curio shop to purchase souvenirs, local currency or credit cards accepted.

2Nt Post-Cruise: Durban's Historic Statesmen

The region around Durban has played a pivotal role in the lives of two of the 20th-century's most revered statesmen - Mohandas Ghandi and Nelson Mandela. Ghandi arrived as a young lawyer in 1893 and his experience here fighting injustice shaped him and earned him the appellation Mahatma (meaning Great Soul). Mandela's capture in 1952 ultimately led to the complete upheaval of apartheid.

Please check with your travel professional for details regarding visa requirements for South Africa. It is the responsibility of the guest to obtain all appropriate visas before your cruise.

All flights should be scheduled for departure from Durban's King Shaka International Airport

DAY 1 - DISEMBARK IN DURBAN

Meet your guide at the pier following disembarkation. They will introduce you to the area via a comprehensive city tour.

Follow the palm tree-lined Victoria Embankment, passing the Dick King Statue, the imposing Durban Manor, the Yacht Club and Juma Mosque en-route to the Victoria Street Market.

As you step out of the vehicle, your every sense will be arrested with vivid stimuli; an experience unlike any other. Breathe in the heady mix of spices, listen to the ringing sounds of people calling friends, bargaining, selling their wares and bantering. The Street Market is no place for tasteful beige and mild mannered pastels - rich jewel colours draw your eyes and beckon you to appreciate textures of fine silks and hard calicos. At the market, you guide will teach you all about Indian spices - the Durban way!

Drive into the City Centre and past the Post Office (Durban's century old City Hall), Old Market Square, City Hall and Local History Museum.

Continue to the Currie Rd View Site, stopping briefly to take in the panoramic views of the City.

Depart for the Durban Botanical Gardens to enjoy a leisurely stroll through the gardens, which house a wide variety of local flora, before driving to the Moses Mabhida Stadium for a photo stop.

Drive along the Golden Mile beachfront, where Zulu Rickshaw pullers, resplendent in their colourful regalia, transport visitors in their decorated rickshaws.

Following lunch at a local restaurant, head out of town toward the Phoenix settlement, a community founded on a communal way of life where the value of labor for the common good and self-reliance were stressed. The cottage in which Gandhi lived with his family was called Sarvodaya, meaning 'well-being for all'. Although it was burnt down in the political upheaval of the mid-1980s prior to the abolition of apartheid, it has been rebuilt as a museum.

Return to the hotel at the end of the afternoon and enjoy dinner on your own.

Overnight at the Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharini Hotel - Durban, S. Africa

DAY 2 - DURBAN

Following breakfast at the hotel, depart for a drive toward the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site. The drive itself is filled with stunning sites and scenery. The route you'll take is known as the 'arts and crafts route'. There are weavers, potters, woodcrafters, leather workers, artists, metalworkers, box makers, herb growers, cheese makers, beer brewers and so much more. The villages are set in picturesque landscapes offering magnificent views.

One of the highlights of the day is a stop at Ardmore Ceramics. Known worldwide for their exquisite items, each piece is a collaboration of three different artisans, each with their own specialty. While some pieces are very contemporary and others more traditional, the common thread that binds them is that each tells a story. The stories encompass a variety of subject including social issues, daily life and of course Africa's rich flora and fauna.

Vist a spot where nature competes with the beauty of the local artisans at Howick Falls. The other name for this spot is KwaNogqaza, the 'place of the tall one', for obvious reasons - the waterfall is a 95 metre cascade into a boiling, restless pool. It is regarded by the local Zulus with grave superstition, and said to be the place of the spirits of ancestors.

Nearby is a site that changed South Africa forever - the Nelson Mandela Capture Site. This cultural and historical exhibition is situated at the site where Nelson Mandela was apprehended for his anti-Apartheid activism acts in August,1952. Mr Mandela had been travelling in disguise as the chauffeur of a car. Apartheid police had been pursuing him for 17 months and, as he passed along this stretch of road, they were finally able to capture and arrest him. From the time of his incarceration, Nelson Mandela made great strides in awakening the consciousness of South Africans, and the world, to the inequalities and unfair treatment that was carrying on within the borders of this great land.

Return to Durban at the end of the afternoon. Dinner this evening is on your own account.

The open-air, 4WD safari vehicles utilised on this tour are not covered, and guests are therefore exposed to the elements.
