Silversea Luxury Cruises A Devonport, Tasmania

Located on Tasmania's northwest coast, Devonport is the terminal of the Bass Strait ferry service. Tin-roofed weatherboard bungalows line the banks of the Mersey River on which the seaport of Devonport is located. For the most part, the town serves as a jumping-off point into the island's rugged west coast area and as such has developed a significant tourism infrastructure. Central Devonport is bounded by the Mersey River to the east, with the ferry terminal just across the river. View more

A tourist information office and a small interpretive center provide visitors arriving on the formidable Spirit of Tasmania with advice and instructions for trips into Tasmania's untamed areas. In Devonport itself, the place not to be missed is the Tiagarra Tasmanian Aboriginal Culture and Art Centre located at the dramatic Mersey Bluff. The center has preserved around 270 aboriginal rock engravings, of which a small collection of concentric circles, motifs or snakes, abalone shells, emus, crayfish and other creatures are on display. Taped background information provides insight into the life of the Tasmanian aborigines. The Maritime and Folk Museum is an additional attraction as are a variety of souvenir shops, art galleries and the Wilderness Society Shop, which make for interesting diversions while visiting Devonport.
