Silversea Luxury Cruises A Darwin

Darwin

Darwin is Australia's most colorful, and exotic, capital city. Surrounded on three sides by the turquoise waters of the Timor Sea, the streets are lined with tropical flowers and trees. Warm and dry in winter, hot and steamy in summer, it's a relaxed and casual place, as well as a beguiling blend of tropical frontier outpost and Outback hardiness. Thanks to its close proximity to Southeast Asia and its multicultural population it also seems more like Asia than the rest of Australia. View more

Darwin is a city that has always had to fight for its survival. The seductiveness of contemporary Darwin lifestyles belies a history of failed attempts that date from 1824 when Europeans attempted to establish an enclave in this harsh, unyielding climate. The original 1869 settlement, called Palmerston, was built on a parcel of mangrove wetlands and scrub forest that had changed little in 15 million years. It was not until 1911, after it had already weathered the disastrous cyclones of 1878, 1882, and 1897, that the town was named after the scientist who had visited Australia's shores aboard the Beagle in 1839. During World War II it was bombed more than 60 times, as the harbor full of warships was a prime target for the Japanese war planes. Then, on the night of Christmas Eve 1974, the city was almost completely destroyed by Cyclone Tracy, Australia’s greatest natural disaster. It's a tribute to those who stayed and to those who have come to live here after Tracy that the rebuilt city now thrives as an administrative and commercial center for northern Australia. Old Darwin has been replaced by something of an edifice complex—such buildings as Parliament House and the Supreme Court all seem very grand for such a small city, especially one that prides itself on its casual, outdoor-centric lifestyle. Today Darwin is the best place from which to explore Australia's Top End, with its wonders of Kakadu and the Kimberley region.

Defence of Darwin Experience

The Defence of Darwin Experience facility is an interactive exhibition space that includes the immersive Bombing of Darwin Gallery, iconic objects from that time, first-hand accounts and multimedia presentations. During World War II many civilians and service personnel fought, died, or were dispossessed. The Defence of Darwin Experience acknowledges the sacrifice of those who lost their lives, and the courage of all who served in the defence of the Northern Territory.

Darwin Highlights

Darwin has a rich and colourful history and this tour highlights some important sights that help to chronicle this tropical city's past.

Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory

Following the convict era, Australian history was shaped by another phase, when colonial settlers travelled across the globe in the hope of finding a better world, eager to explore new lands in search of personal and financial growth. Stop at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, a great place to complete your exploration of Darwin's heritage. The Art Gallery houses a comprehensive display of Indigenous art and artefacts that reveal much about the various Aboriginal groups from Darwin and its surrounding environs.

In the museum, you will also have the opportunity to learn how the city was devastated then rebuilt in 1975 after Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin on Christmas Eve in 1974. Despite its ordeal, Darwin re-grouped, rebuilt and today stands stronger than ever. A very realistic Cyclone Tracy display recreates the atmosphere of that fateful Christmas Eve.

Amongst the eclectic collection of exhibits here you will also find an excellent display of Aboriginal, South-East Asian and Oceanic Art, along with a permanent collection of major Australian fine art.

Re-boarding your coach, it's a brief panoramic drive of the city before returning the pier.

Please note: This tour requires a minimal amount of walking, and is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair, able to embark/disembark the coach via steps. Lightweight, comfortable clothing and sun protection are recommended. Space on this tour is very limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Australian Outback- Walkabout on Another Planet

Voyage Number: 9816POST

Departure Date: 29 July 2018

Nights: 6 Nights

Start of Program: Darwin

End of Program: Darwin

Highlights:

· Fly in and out of Bullo River Station in a private plane

· Spend 6 nights at your own 700 square mile outback station

· Climb or fly to ancient rock outcrops containing galleries of Aboriginal rock art and for spectacular panoramic views

· Explore gorges, wetlands, savannah, escarpments and vast areas of pristine wilderness

· Take a private plane to the Purnululu National Park, where you will see the Bungle Bungle Range from the air and walk amongst the famous eroded towers and beehive structures

· Be part of a team rounding up wild bulls

Itinerary:

Day 1 - Fly from Darwin to Bullo River Station by private plane and depart by off-road Polaris and 4x4 vehicles on a short introductory tour of the station. Enjoy welcome drinks and gourmet canapes at a lakeside location at sunset. In the evening you will be welcomed by a local Aboriginal elder with a special "Welcome to Country" ceremony. An exclusive dinner will set the stage for your adventure in Australia's Outback.

Day 2 - Departure for a full day excursion to see ancient Aboriginal rock art galleries accompanied by a guide who will offer insights into the complexities of the Aboriginal culture. You will also cruise up the spectacular Bullo River Gorge to fish, spot crocodiles and to enjoy the landscape. A gourmet barbeque lunch will be ready in the middle of the outback. In the afternoon you will have more opportunities for bird and wildlife watching.

Day 3 -Today you will have the chance to explore one of the most colorful, best hidden and last discovered wonders of the Australian outback: the Bungle Bungle Range. A scenic flight in a private high-wing aircraft permitting the best views of the land below will take you across the Ord River Irrigation Area, Lake Argyle, several rivers and ranges to land at a remote airfield in Purnululu National Park. From there you will be driven closer to the range and will finally enjoy a moderate 3-kilometer walk amongst the famous towers and domes. You will visit Cathedral Gorge with its awe inspiring acoustics and walk along Picaninny Creek. The flight back will take you across the Argyle Diamond Mine, where the rare pink diamonds are produced. Once back at Bullo River Station, a private evening presentation of the famous Argyle Pink Diamonds will be given.

Day 4 -This day will be used to offer you an insight into the daily life of a cattle station of the Top End. The enormity of the property and the different terrains require all kinds and modes of transport -from horses to customized 4x4s and even helicopters are used to spot and round up the cattle. Depending on what is happening at the station, a wide range of activities will be available: from feeding the stock, to branding and dehorning of cattle. The most exciting (and adrenaline pumping) is the Wild Bull Mustering, which involves helicopters to search the remotest part of the station, customized 4x4s to locate and round up the wild bulls, and highly skilled Australian cowboys known as "Ringers" to actually catch them and tie them to trees for collection by cattle trucks. These are not staged events, but part of the seasonal work on the station.

Day 5 -In the morning, take off for some of the best fishing in Northern Australia. The Bullo River -which runs for 80 kilometers through the property- provides opportunities for fresh and tidal saltwater fishing. The river is quite famous for its Barramundi, but other species are found here too. You can fish from the riverbank, from boats, or (for an optional extra) be taken by helicopter to remote fishing spots. A highlight of the day will be a visit to the "Cascades", a set of beautiful waterholes stretching out over 2 kilometers through a gorge fed by a year-round spring, where you can alternate between swimming in jade-green natural rock pools, relaxing on the warm rocks and enjoying snacks and refreshments.

Day 6 -Today you have another opportunity to explore the vast Bullo River Station taking a 4x4, a Polaris buggy or even one of the helicopters. You can try your hand at horseback riding, go hiking, or do some more fishing. You can always be assured to see wildlife on the property because of the year-round supply of freshwater in the river and gorges. Perhaps you want to take off on a photography safari or go birding.

In the evening, a Gala Astronomy Dinner will leave unforgettable memories. During a gourmet dinner under the vast Kimberley sky you will be entertained with some local music, before Greg Quickie, a well-known astronomer from Broome, will delight you with information on the local sky, using telescopes and laser pointers to indicate stars, constellations and deep space wonders.

Day 7 -Departure from Bullo River Station by private plane to Darwin. Once in Darwin, you will have the opportunity to have a behind-the-scenes look at how some of Australia's top luxury products are made. A senior member of Paspaley Pearls will take you through the different stages of how South Sea pearls are produced, graded and then made into outstanding jewelry by master craftsmen. A private viewing of some of the most exquisite pearl jewelry will be accompanied by chef prepared pearl-meat appetizers.

You will then have the opportunity to visit di CROCO, a local luxury boutique specializing in Australian saltwater crocodile skin accessories. These beautifully handcrafted pieces make the perfect memento of your unique outback experience. Lunch will be at one of Darwin's top restaurants. Transfer to the airport or pier -depending on whether leaving by plane or joining a Silversea ship for more exploration.
