Silversea Luxury Cruises A Colon

Colon

The provincial capital of Colón, beside the canal's Atlantic entrance, is named for the Spanish-language surname of Christopher Columbus, though the Americans called it Aspinwall in the 19th century. It was once a prosperous city, as the architecture of its older buildings attests, but it spent the second half of the 20th century in steady decay. Though the 21st century brought relief to the city’s chronic unemployment problems, much of it remains a slum, and crime is endemic.

Panama City Tour (For In-Transit Guests)

Discover the splendid history, architecture and landmarks of Panama City during this memorable, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Old Panama City

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 90-minute drive along the new modern highway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans en route to the ruins of the old capital city. Founded in 1509, it is today known as Panama Viejo, or 'Old Panama'. Upon arrival, take in the sights and sounds of this historic locale.

Casco Antiguo

Next, continue on to the old Colonial city of Casco Antiguo. The city blends Caribbean, Republican, Art Deco, French and Colonial architectural styles, which in turn reflect the cultural diversity of the country. Most of Panama City's main monuments are located in Casco Antiguo. During a guided stroll here, see the Metropolitan Cathedral and National Theatre, among other buildings.

Las Bóvedas

Leaving Casco Antiguo, continue on to your final destination, Las Bóvedas. Located in Casco Viejo, Las Bovedas is the sea wall of the Spanish Fort on the point of the peninsula. The site is named after the dungeons embedded in the wall, which today house an art gallery and restaurant. A stroll along the top of the wall provides a splendid panoramic view of Panama City across the bay. Following your visit, re-board the coach and commence the approximately 75-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 1.2 (about two kilometres), at times over uneven and cobblestone surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Guests must be at least six years old to participate on this tour.

Panama Canal Tour with Airport Transfer

Guests with flights departing after 3:30 p.m. can experience the world-renowned Panama Canal during this panoramic, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Panama Canal, and Miraflores Visitor's and Observation Centres

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 90-minute drive to the Miraflores Visitor's Centre. Upon arrival, proceed to the Observation Centre. View a documentary about the history of the Miraflores Locks, visit the four exhibition halls, see ships passing through these locks, and observe the entire operation from the top floor of the Miraflores Visitor's Centre.

Miraflores Locks and Airport Transfer

The Miraflores Locks are part of the engineering marvel that makes up the Panama Canal; the gates of the Miraflores Locks are the highest of the three locks, due to the extreme variation of the tides that takes place in the Pacific Ocean. From the time a vessel enters these locks, it takes approximately ten minutes to complete the process; the water goes in-and-out of the gates using only gravity, since no pumps or other artificial devices help in this process. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute transfer to Tocumen International Airport, and your flight home.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking, at times over inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair, provided they are able to get on/off the coach; elevators are available at the venue. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Guests must be at least four years old to participate on this tour. Arrival time at the airport is scheduled for 12:30pm.

Expansion Observation Platform and Agua Claras Locks

After observing this amazing feat, re-board your coach and head to the new Panama Canal locks (Agua Clara Visitor's Centre). Upon arrival, visit the Expansion Observation Platform to see the addition of a new traffic lane created by two new sets of locks, one on the Pacific side and one on the Atlantic. This doubles the canal's capacity, and allows longer and wider vessels to transit. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.
