Silversea Luxury Cruises A Catania, Sicily

Catania, Sicily

Through its history, Catania’s successive populations were deported by one Greek tyrant, sold into slavery by another, and driven out by the Carthaginians. Every time the city got back on its feet it was struck by a new calamity: plague decimated the population in the Middle Ages, a mile-wide stream of lava from Mt. Etna swallowed part of it in 1669, and 25 years later a disastrous earthquake forced the Catanesi to begin again. View more

Today Catania is full of exuberant youth, and it shows in the chic osterie (taverns) that serve wine, the designer bistros, and the trendy ethnic boutiques that have popped up all over town. Even more impressive is the vibrant cultural life. Although the city remains loud and full of traffic, signs of gentrification are everywhere. The elimination of vehicles from the Piazza del Duomo and the main artery of Via Etna and the scrubbing of many of the historic buildings have added to its newfound charm.

Taormina & the Greek Roman Theatre

Depart the pier for the approximate 31-mile (about 50-kilometre) drive via the highway along the Ionian Coast en route to Taormina.

Taormina

Perched on a terrace overlooking the sea, the town emotes a delightful Medieval character. The buildings in the town centre have remained unchanged for centuries, and many of them are adorned with window boxes overflowing with brightly-coloured flowers; today, some are used as interesting shops. Upon arrival at the bus parking area, a brief walk takes you to Taormina's main street, Corso Umberto, and proceeds past plenty of interesting shops.

Palazzo Corvaia and Greek-Roman Theatre

An exterior visit is made at the Palazzo Corvaia, a 15th-century building adorned with a splendid façade and classic double windows. Next, walk uphill to visit the impressive Greek Theatre. Built in the 3rd-century B.C., this stunning, open-air theatre is renowned for its width and acoustic effects, and still hosts musical performances during the summer months. With a diameter of 358 feet (107 metres), it is Sicily's second-largest theatre. The upper tiers offer spectacular vistas, including a splendid view of Mount Etna.

Corso Umberto

Following your walking tour return to the Corso Umberto. Some time is made available here for you to browse the shops, many small lanes and 'Viuzze', where you can purchase local handcrafts. Afterward, head back to the parking area and re-board the coach for the return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, including uphill climbs, steps and uneven terrain inside the theatre, and is not recommended for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair.

Sicilian Cooking with Signora Consoli

Embrace the scenic beauty and unique flavours of Sicily during this memorable, market visit, cooking lesson, and lunch at a private home in the countryside.

Depart the pier with your guide and head towards the Cathedral to the Porta Uzeda area, home to one of the most ancient and typical markets in the area. Here, discover the stables of Mediterranean cuisine - vegetables, fruits, and fish, while admiring the colours of the Sicilian stalls. Then, reboard the coach and drive on the Viagrande, formerly known as 'Varanni'.

Viagrande

Located on the slopes of Mt. Etna, this small village is renowned for its vineyards and a year-round, mild climate that makes it a popular summer destination for Catania residents seeking a respite from the heat of the city. Upon arrival, proceed to the 18-century Sicilian home of gastronomic journalist Eleonora Consoli, author of several books on Italian and Sicilian cooking, and the recipient of numerous awards. Many years ago she established the cooking school, in which now her daughter Monica is continuing the family tradition hosting guests.

Cucina del Sole

Join Ms. Consoli in the kitchen of her typical, 18th-century Sicilian home for a lesson in Sicilian cooking that focuses on pasta, meat, vegetables and cakes. Your cooking lesson concludes with a lunch consisting of the prepared dishes accompanied by wine, and served al fresco in Ms. Consoli's garden (weather permitting).

After lunch, re-board your coach for the approximate 45-minute return drive to the pier.

Please note: On this tour, participation is very limited on this tour; pre-booking is recommended to avoid disappointment. This tour involves some walking for reaching and visiting (entirely on foot) the market; In Viagrande minimal amount of walking of about 328 feet (100 meters) from the parking area to the house, with some steps to negotiate to enter the house. Walking inside the house is at each guest's discretion. The house is suitable for guests with limited mobility, but offers no wheelchair facilities.

Ancient Siracusa

Discover Siracusa's ancient treasures and picturesque beauty during this memorable visit to the city, with a walking tour through Ortygia.

Depart the pier for the scenic, one-hour drive to Siracusa. Founded in the 8th century B.C., this is the ancient city where Archimedes lived, Plato taught and Aeschylus wrote his plays.

Siracusa Archaeological Site

Upon arrival, proceed to the archaeological site and commence your walking tour though this historic venue. Along the way, a visit is made to the Altar of Hieron II, which was erected in the 2nd century B.C. to celebrate the 'Eleutherian Feast' and used for human sacrifices.

Greek Theatre

Next, continue on to the Greek Theatre. One of the largest theatres in the Hellenic World, the Greek Theatre was carved from a rocky hillside in the 5th century B.C., and subsequently enlarged to its present size. Other highlights of your visit include the Paradiso Quarry and the famous Ear of Dionysius, an enormous grotto with an extraordinary echo. The acoustics of this cave enabled the tyrant Dionysius to eavesdrop on his prisoners. Leaving the archaeological site, re-board your coach for the brief drive to Ortygia.

Ortygia

Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour through the grand Piazza Archimede, which is adorned with 14th- and 15th-century palaces, and the Fountain of Artemis, or 'Fontana di Artemide', in its centre. The 15th-century Palazzo dell'Orologio stands on the west side of the Piazza Archimede, and the 18th-century Palazzo Gargallo on the south.

Arethusa Fountain

Next, proceed for a visit to the picturesque Arethusa Fountain, celebrated by Pindar and Virgilio as the mythical spring of the nymph Arethusa.

Following your walking tour, some free time is made available for you to browse the shops at your leisure before re-boarding your coach for the approximate 1.5-hour return drive to the pier.

Please note: The visits to Siracusa and Ortygia are entirely on-foot, and include cobblestone streets and uneven ground inside the archaeological site. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair.

Majestic Mt. Etna, rising to a height of 10,800 feet, is an impressive and famous landmark. Enjoy a scenic drive along the coast and the slopes of this magnificent volcano.

On the way to Mt. Etna, enjoy the delightful countryside of vineyards and orchards. The winding road then slopes upward and passes through vast lava fields all the way to the Silvestri Craters, almost 6,000 feet above sea level. Take advantage of this opportunity to walk along the edge of these craters and imagine how they appeared thousands of years ago when filled with hot lava. More than 100 eruptions have been recorded since the 4th-century BC. Caution is advised when walking across lava and rocky ground, where crevices still exude fumes and heat. Re-board your coach for the drive back down through the lava fields to the pier in Catania.

Please Note: Operation of the tour is subject to the volcano's activity. We recommend you wear comfortable clothing and bring along a light jacket or sweater as temperatures can become quite cool at the higher altitudes. We also recommend flat, comfortable, closed-toe shoes. This excursion is not recommended for guests with heart or respiratory conditions. Those with walking difficulties or those who utilise a wheelchair and cannot visit the Crateri Silverstri may opt to visit the local restaurants and shops in front of the coach parking area.
