Cape Town

If you visit only one place in South Africa, make it Cape Town. Whether you're partaking of the Capetonian inclination for alfresco fine dining (the so-called "Mother City" is home to many of the country's best restaurants) or sipping wine atop Table Mountain, you sense—correctly—that this is South Africa's most urbane, civilized city. Here elegant Cape Dutch buildings abut ornate Victorian architecture and imposing British monuments. View more

In the Bo-Kaap neighborhood, the call to prayer echoes through cobbled streets lined with houses painted in bright pastels, while the sweet tang of Malay curry wafts through the air. Flower sellers, newspapers hawkers, and numerous markets keep street life pulsing, and every lamppost advertises another festival, concert, or cultural happening. But as impressive as Cape Town's urban offerings are, what you'll ultimately recall about this city is the sheer grandeur of its setting—the mesmerizing beauty of Table Mountain rising above the city, the stunning drama of the mountains cascading into the sea, and the gorgeous hues of the two oceans. Francis Drake wasn't exaggerating when he said this was "the fairest Cape we saw in the whole circumference of the earth," and he would have little cause to change his opinion today. A visit to Cape Town is often synonymous with a visit to the peninsula beneath the city, and for good reason. With pristine white-sand beaches, hundreds of mountain trails, and numerous activities from surfing to paragliding to mountain biking, the accessibility, variety, and pure beauty of the great outdoors will keep nature lovers and outdoor adventurers occupied for hours, if not days. You could spend a week exploring just the city and peninsula. Often likened to San Francisco, Cape Town has two things that the City by the Bay doesn't—Table Mountain and Africa. The mountain, or tabletop, is vital to Cape Town's identity. It dominates the city in a way that's difficult to comprehend until you visit. In the afternoon, when creeping fingers of clouds spill over Table Mountain and reach toward the city, the whole town seems to shiver and hold its breath. Meanwhile, for all of its bon-vivant European vibe, Cape Town also reflects the diversity, vitality, and spirit of the many African peoples who call this city home. Cape Town has grown as a city in a way that few others in the world have. Take a good look at the street names. Strand and Waterkant streets (meaning "beach" and "waterside," respectively) are now far from the sea. However, when they were named they were right on the beach. An enormous program of dumping rubble into the ocean extended the city by a good few square miles (thanks to the Dutch obsession with reclaiming land from the sea). Almost all the city on the seaward side of Strand and Waterkant is part of the reclaimed area of the city known as the Foreshore. If you look at old paintings of the city, you will see that originally waves lapped at the very walls of the castle, now more than half a mile from the ocean.

Heli flight & Wine Tasting at De Grendel Estates

Experience a gorgeous scenic flight across Table Bay to the Wine Valley of Durbanville and one of the best wine estates in the region, De Grendel. De Grendel means "the latch" in Dutch - this farm was historically the gateway on the route to the inland settlements of Durbanville and Stellenbosch which had to be opened to traverse the Tygerberg.

Upon being greeted at the pier, take a short transfer to the helipad at the Waterfront and view a short safety briefing before take-off.

Enjoy the scenic flight across Table Bay to the Wine Valley of Durbanville - one of the smallest wine regions in South Africa. Few places on earth offer such a spectacular outlook. Nestled atop Tygerberg Hill, surveying its surroundings with unparalleled 270 degree panoramas, De Grendel showcases Table Mountain, the city of Cape Town and the seaboard all in one landscape. Just 20 minutes from the city, this dramatic expanse of land offers perspective and accessibility.

Relax and immerse yourself in the wonders of the landscape while enjoying a wine tasting before flying back to the helipad at the Waterfront.

Your tour concludes with a short transfer back to the pier.

Chapman's Peak & Scenic Drive

Take in the views of the Atlantic seaboard, the southern Peninsula and Chapman's Peak on this scenic and memorable half-day panoramic coach tour, considered to be one of the best marine drives in the world.

Depart the pier and begin this awe-inspiring look at Cape Town's coastline with a scenic drive along the Atlantic coast, passing through Sea Point, Bantry Bay, Clifton and Camps Bay. Stop at Maiden's Cove to enjoy the magnificent views onto Camps Bay Beach and the Twelve Apostles, before continuing along the coastal road, past the upmarket suburb of Llandudno, and on towards the fishing village of Hout Bay.

From here you will travel along one of the world's most spectacular routes, Chapman's Peak Drive, with its numerous look out points, which offer magnificent views over the ocean towards Hout Bay and the Sentinel. The road, carved out between 1915 and 1922 hugs the near-vertical face of the mountain. At the time it was constructed, this roadway was regarded as a major feat of engineering. Even today, the drive along this beautiful coastline takes your breath away.

Pass the pristine white sands of Noordhoek Beach, before continuing over the scenic Ou Kaapse Weg (Old Cape Road), taking in the views over the southern Peninsula, Cape Flats, and False Bay.

Head back to the city via the M3 motorway, passing the University of Cape Town, Rhodes Memorial, Mostert's Mill and the famous Groote Schuur Hospital en-route.

Please note: This panoramic coach tour requires no walking; however, guests must be able to get on and off the coach via steps. Indulge your senses on this full-day tour to South Africa's most renowned wine country, with wine tasting.

Meet your guide and coach on the pier and begin the easterly drive towards the famous Cape Winelands, set below the dramatic range of mountains called the 'Hottentots Holland'. Rows of oaks and open spaces, where jagged lines of trees etched against white walls diffuse the heat of summer, transform the streets into soft, shady tunnels. The oaks have been proclaimed national monuments.

Table Mountain & Signal Hill

No visit to Cape Town is complete without a trip up Table Mountain, the city's most celebrated landmark. Depart from the quayside and travel up Kloof Nek, the saddle between Table Mountain and Lions Head, to the Lower Cableway Station. Here you board the Swiss engineered Rotair Cable Car and ascend from the Valley Station 1,190 feet (363 metres) to the Mountain Station. The journey from the base to the summit takes just under four minutes, and there are spectacular views as the floor of the car rotates 360 degrees during the ascent and descent.

Table Mountain gets its name from the flat topped central massif of the mountain, which viewed from the city, is surrounded by Devil's Peak on the left, Lion's Head on the right and Signal Hill in the foreground. They form a sort of amphitheatre that encloses the city centre and some of the older suburbs. Other earlier suburbs are on either side of the chain of mountains, which run like a spine through the Cape Peninsula, from Table Mountain to Cape Point - the cape from which Cape Town gets its name.

From the summit, the natural protected area stretching from Signal Hill to Cape Point has been managed under the custodianship of the National Parks Board. This area has one of the highest concentrations of endemic plant and animal species in any area of its size, containing a staggering 2,285 plant species, more than that of the entire United Kingdom.

Re-board the cable car for the descent, and begin drive to the summit of Signal Hill, where breath-taking views await. Take in the spectacular vistas whilst enjoying a selection of canapés and a glass of sparkling wine.

From here, return to the pier, travelling via Sea Point & Green Point, and passing by the Cape Town Stadium en-route.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking, approximately 0.6 miles (1 km), with paved pathways and wooded look-out decks at Table Mountain. It is suitable for guests who utilise a wheelchair, able to embark and disembark the coach via steps. This tour is not recommended to guests with limited mobility. The cable car visit at Table Mountain is strictly weather-permitting. If the cableway is closed, a visit the South African Natural History Museum is substituted. Should there be unforeseen traffic congestion on the day of the tour we would not recommend going to Signal Hill, and a suitable alternative venue will be pre-advised. This tour is weather permitting and should this impact the guests' experience an alternative venue will be advised there are tarred & paved surfaces at the main car park & viewpoint area on Signal Hill. Please note, however, that should guests wander away from the main car park and viewpoint area, the terrain does become uneven.

Parkwood Primary School

Experience an opportunity to make the world a better place for the children in the Western Cape on this half-day excursion.

Grassy Park and the surrounding areas were created some 35 years ago, when the old and much publicized Apartheid system forced many residents to settle in un-serviced and underdeveloped farm areas. Parkwood Primary first opened its doors in 1961 with just over 300 learners in 7 classrooms. Due to overpopulated classrooms, double shift classes were introduced, whereby teachers had to teach 2 separate class groups per day.

Today with the help of Non-governmental Organisations and community workers, Parkwood Primary has over 528 eager learners with 15 dedicated educators. Together they are laying down a solid education foundation for the future of South Africa.

On arrival at the school you will have the option to help prepare the actual meals for the children and afterwards, you have a chance to meet some of these youngsters. Lastly you may opt to help clear the dishes (if you wish) and interact with staff at the school to learn more about the children.

Please Note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking and is not wheelchair accessible. Photography is only permitted with the consent from the school headmaster. We strongly suggest guests wear light comfortable clothing, comfortable closed toed shoes, a light jacket, hat and sunscreen.

Astronomy & Gastronomy

Depart on a magical evening of gastronomy and astronomy at the Cellars-Hohenhort Hotel; a Relais & Chateaux property located in Cape Town's historical Constantia Valley and surrounded by the breath-taking slopes of Table Mountain and its beautiful gardens.

Your evening begins with an unforgettable 4-course dinner which includes house wine and local beer or soft drinks. After which you will be guided through to the putting green, designed by South African golfing legend, Gary Player.

Next, you will be divided into smaller groups and guided to a variety of telescopes that await you. The owners of these telescopes are all passionate and experienced astronomy enthusiasts that will share their passion and knowledge of the night skies. Enjoy "close up" views of the Southern Cross, which are only visible within the southern hemisphere and many other wonders appearing at that time.

At night the skies offer a rare experience of star gazing. You will be experiencing the stars in ways that few others have, due to the natural surroundings of the gardens. Gazing at stars through an eyepiece is an unforgettable experience, made more special when combined with the stories behind the stars.

After your star gazing experience, re-board your vehicle for the drive back to the pier with lasting memories of a remarkable evening in Constantia.

Please Note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking for approximately 20 metres (65.6 feet) and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. We suggest guests wear light comfortable clothing, mosquito repellent and lightweight jacket. Departure time for this tour is can change at any time depending on visibility and based on when the sun sets. To appreciate the stars we must allow our eyes to adapt to the dark as the last light of the day disappears. Lighting is kept to a bare minimum to ensure best visibility possible. When looking through the telescope you will not see colour, but the skies in its original form. Cancellations within 7 days prior to the sail date are under 100% penalty.
