Silversea Luxury Cruises A Cairns

Cairns

Tourism is the lifeblood of Cairns (pronounced Caans). The city makes a good base for exploring the wild top half of Queensland, and tens of thousands of international travelers use it as a jumping-off point for activities such as scuba diving and snorkeling trips to the Barrier Reef, as well as boating, fishing, parasailing, scenic flights, and rain-forest treks. It's a tough environment, with intense heat and fierce wildlife. View more

Along with wallabies and grey kangaroos in the savannah and tree kangaroos in the rain forest, you'll find stealthy saltwater crocodiles, venomous snakes, and jellyfish so deadly they put the region’s stunning beaches off- limits to swimmers for nearly half the year. Yet despite this formidable setting, Cairns and tropical North Queensland are far from intimidating places. The people are warm and friendly, the sights spectacular, and—at the right time of year—the beachside lounging is world-class.

Come closer and watch the interesting antics of Darwin's own black and white nemo and all his other colourful friends that exist in our beautiful harbour.

At the Nocturnal House your private guide will show you some of the common, rare and endangered native nocturnal animals of this region. Many of these animals, which include mammals, reptiles and invertebrates, are rarely seen in the wild. Here you have an unparalleled opportunity to watch at your leisure as they each go about their nightly routines in their recreated habitats. The lighting here is switched to reverse cycle turning our day, into their night and our night, into their day. This ensures your visit coincides with the most active part of their daily routines and that they too, have time to sleep undisturbed.

The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef, located in the Coral Sea off the coast of Queensland in north-east Australia. It stretches over 1240 miles (2,000 kilometres) in length and can be seen from space. The first European explorer to see the Great Barrier Reef was Captain James Cook during his 1768 voyage. Cook discovered the reef by running aground on it June 11, 1770.

The Great Barrier Reef is a large system of about 3000 reefs and 900 islands that are mostly offshore. Due to its vast biodiversity, warm, clear waters, the Great Barrier Reef is sometimes referred to as the single largest living animal being in the world. In reality it is many colonies of corals. A large part of the reef is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

Outer Reef Marine Experience

Spend approximately three hours at the Outer Reef pontoon. Here you can participate in guided coral viewing from a semi-submersible craft or glass-bottom boat. The on-board touch tank gives you the opportunity to experience unique marine life up-close. If you prefer, snorkel in a specially-designed enclosure, with rest and view stations or watch a fish feeding demonstration from an underwater observatory. A tropical buffet lunch that includes seafood, salads and hot dishes is offered during your stay. Freshwater showers and change rooms allow you to be in comfort.

Helicopter Flight

From the reef pontoon, board your helicopter and fly to Green Island. Experience the exhilaration of flying above one of the wonders of the world. Opal like formations of coral appears to float in the pristine blue waters, while the sun pierces through and enhances this natural beauty. Flying above such a vast array of marine life and spectacular colour provides irresistible photo opportunities. An aerial perspective of the Great Barrier Reef is a vision that stays with you long after you return home.

Check-in, briefly freshen-up and regroup to watch the fish being fed and the sun as it begins to dip, enjoying sunset drinks on the beach (weather dependent). Dinner tonight is at the resort's restaurant, featuring fresh and local produce.

Overnight accommodations are at the Green Island Resort - Great Barrier Reef

DAY TWO - Green Island Resort/Cairns

After breakfast, meet your guide and begin your island walk. Learn about the flora and fauna, and in particular, the birds, and how they have evolved. Continue your exploration aboard a glass-bottom boat as you look closely at the reef surrounding the island, with all its varied marine life.

Enjoy lunch at the resort with free time to walk along the beach, explore independently or just take in the idyllic surrounds.

Check out of your room and transfer by catamaran back to the ship.
